Lunch with old colleagues of HKSTP

Dr. HL Yiu invited me to have lunch with Ms. Tinny Lui on 31st July 2025. We selected the restaurant named “PENTOLA” in Tai Po. During the lunch, we took a photo for memory.

I arrived early and took a photo of the sculpture and the restaurant’s brand.

HL introduced some good foods to us.

The location of “PENTOLA” is in Tai Po Arts Centre (TPAC). Retrofitted from the former Tai Po Government Secondary School, TPAC is a project under the Signature Project Scheme (SPS) proposed by Tai Po District Council to the Government.

Announcement of Professional Title (職稱) through HKIE to connect with Mainland System

I am honour to be evaluated and nominated by HKIE for the title of “Professorate Senior Engineer” (正高級工程師) as recognition of my technical competence and achievement. The title was commonly named “Professor-level Senior Engineer” (教授級工程師). I attended the interview on 8 Jun 2025, the announcement was released on 17 July, and it would take effect after 24 July 2025. (1, 2)

The Human Resources and Social Security Department of Guangdong Province (GDHRSSD) accepted Hong Kong experts nominated by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), granting them the Professional Title (職稱) since Nov 2023.  Promoting “Professional Title” evaluation not only creates opportunities for Hong Kong professionals to advance their careers in the Mainland but also fosters alignment with Mainland standards. There are five ranks of “Professional Title”, namely "Technologist" (技術員), "Assistant Engineer" (助理工程師), "Engineer" (工程師), "Senior Engineer" (高級工程師), and "Professorate Senior Engineer" (正高級工程師). (2) The following table lists the professional titles for different occupations and levels. (3)

Since different university programmes had been accredited by HKIE, our students would have more opportunities in their future career through HKIE membership. (4)

Normally, it takes 6 years for students to become members of HKIE after graduation. However, if students worked in the company with HKIE Scheme A, they can complete the training and pass the examination to become a member in 3 years. After being evaluated by the Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area Representative Offices, members of the HKIE can be equivalent to the professional title of "Engineer" in the mainland. This should be very attractive to both local and mainland students.

Xinjiang Cuisine (新疆美食)

Ms. Huang, Jerry Meng, Terence Lam, Florence Chan, Minda Chiang and I found a small group to visit Xinjiang from 10 to 19 July 2025. I summarized different Xinjiang Cuisine for sharing. In Day 1, we only had Airline meal.

We had lunch in local restaurant like HK open-air food stall (大排檔).

We tasted Xinjiang lamb and local vegetables.

Naan (/燒餅) was tried.

We always eat grilled lamb kebabs.

We enjoyed our dinner in the restaurant near hotel.

Big Plate Chicken / Dapanji (大盤雞) is big and spicy.

Stir-fried vegetable and shredded potatoes

That night we arrived at Kansi Hemu Resort (禾木山莊) and had dinner inside the resort.

Hand-pulled lamb (手抓羊肉) here is better than Day 2.

Beans and porridge are good taste.

Lamb Dumplings are nice.

It is not a meat but mushroom.

Xinjiang Black Tofu (新疆黑豆腐) is very special.

We had lunch at the restaurant outside the yurt (蒙古包).

I took a photo of the food menu for reference.

We ordered Shredded Chicken (手撕雞).

This dish features beef with fried egg.

We ended up having dinner near the hotel. This meal was more expensive than the others, but at about 700 RMB for six people it was still cheap!

The waiter highly recommended us to taste roast leg of lamb (烤羊腿).

A small yellow fish we ordered.

We also ordered 1L local draft beer.

We had lunch outside the Devil City.

It is our first time to eat a special fish named Chinese sturgeon (中華鱘).

The menu showed not expensive! Very good taste!

Since we eat too much lamb in previous days, we focused on vegetables.

Then we tried Xinjiang fruits included watermelon and cantaloupe.

The place named Melon Eating Commune

Ms. Huang selected some Xinjiang Muskmelon

Finally we had dinner at this very traditionally designed hotel.

We ordered fried leek dumpling

Fish head pancake is very good taste.

Soup is also good.

In Sayram Lake (賽里木湖), we had fish lunch at a restaurant.

White fish, vegetable and noodle we ordered.

Steamed shark fin with vermicelli (粉絲蒸魚唇) is a specialty.

Another special dish is fish pizza!

And Fishcake!

The hotel we stayed in was called Saihu Impression Hotel. We had eaten too much Xinjiang lamb in the past few days, so we walked a short distance and found a Hunan restaurant (湘菜) and asked for a non-spicy dish.

We ordered fried beef ribs, tofu soup and Mutton pilaf

We passed the Guozigou Bridge (果子溝大橋) and then we found a place for lunch. Where waiters were students from Kazakhs in China We eat the grilled lamb kebabs again.

The menu shows different food and the prices are very affordable.

We also tried the local beer.

Vegetable, Tofu and mushroom were ordered.

This is Xinjiang bread filled vegetable.

There is a very beautiful garden in the hotel and we had dinner near the BBQ garden.

We ordered mushroom, crayfish (小龍蝦), loofah soup and lamb dumplings.

The fried fish tasted good.

We had dinner in the Lucaogou (盧草溝).

The first dish is lamb offal (羊雜).

I like the Fried beans French fries

Mutton soup (羊肉湯) is also good.

We tried the tea beer which was very special!

At night, we arrived the Jinghe (精河). Terence, Florence and I had a late night snack including grilled lamb skewers, squid skewers, tofu skewers

We arrived the DuShanZi Grand Canyon (獨山子大峽谷) and had quick lunch here.

Menu was showed but the price inside.

Each drink cost 30RMB.

Sour plum juice cost 15RMB and tasted good!

But this meal is not cheap (315RMB).

In the last night, we selected a special restaurant named “Afternoon Tea at Alerham” (阿勒爾罕的下午茶).

Menu showed many special food. Originally, we would like to order Roasted Lamb (烤全羊) but it is too big for only six people. (It could be for 10 to 15 people)

Thus, we ordered some very special Xinjiang foods such as Fried Beef Throat (黃喉).

Two corn porridges and one red bean porridge were ordered.

Spicy Shrimp Fries and grilled lamb skewers again!

The nine bowls and three rows (九碗三行宴) is a traditional delicacy in Xinjiang.

The most special one named "lamb leg in bread" (麵包烤羊腿). (Before open & after open)

I recorded how the waiter opened the bread.

On the last day, we returned to Hong Kong in the morning.
