CityU HK Tech Forum on Data Science and AI - Day 2

The HK Tech Forum on Data Science and AI (DSAI) gathers world-renowned scholars in data science and AI to address challenging issues in driving data science and AI technology for the benefit of the society. DSAI is co-organized by Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS), School of Data Science (SDS) and Hong Kong Institute for Data Science (HKIDS). The forum aims to exchange new ideas and technological development among DSAI scholars in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

Day 2

Dr. Kai-fu Lee (Chairman and CEO, Sinovation Ventures) was the first speaker and his topic entitled “How AI Will Transform Our World”. Firstly, he explained what is AI and the different between human intelligence and AI in terms of “Amount of Data Need (Few vs Huge)”, “Optimization Ability (Poor vs Excellent)”, “Individualization (Poor vs Excellent)”, “Abstraction, Analysis & Insight (Excellent vs Poor)” and “Creativity (Excellent vs Poor)”.

Then Dr. Lee briefed the four waves of AI which are disrupting all industries from Internet AI, Business AI, Perception AI and to Autonomous AI.

After that Dr. Lee shared his prediction in 2018 between China and US in AI. It was found that China is comparative weak on Business AI.

Finally, Dr. Lee shared his predication of six mega tech trend from his book AI 2041 and his key investment based on these six mega techs had been discussed.

The second speaker was Prof. Nick Sahinidis (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) and his presentation title was “Data-driven Optimization”. Firstly, he briefed the history of optimization. Then he presented recent theoretical, algorithmic, and methodological advances for black-box optimization problems for which optimization must be performed in the absence of an algebraic formulation.

The third speaker was Fengqi You (Cornell University, USA) and his topic named “Quantum Computing for Optimization and Machine Learning: From Models and Algorithms to Use Cases”. He briefly introduced quantum computing and its potential applications to systems optimization and machine learning.

The fourth speaker was Dr. Chuchu Fan (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA) and her presentation topic was “Building Certifiably Safe and Correct Large-scale Autonomous Systems”. She presented several of recent efforts that combined ML with formal methods and control theory to enable the design of provably dependable and safe autonomous systems.

The fifth speaker was Prof. Yang Shi (University of Victoria, Canada) and his topic entitled “Accelerated Dual Averaging Methods for Decentralized Constrained Optimization”. Decentralized optimization techniques offer high quality solutions to various engineering problems. Finally, Prof. Shi proposed a novel decentralized dual averaging (DDA) algorithm.

Prof. Qiang Yang (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China) was the sixth speakers and his topic entitled “Recent Advances in Trustworthy Federated Learning”. Firstly, he discussed four cases including “Bank Loan, Anti-fraud Application”, “Financial Credit Rating”, “Advertising”, and “Multiple Hospitals Build Collective Model”.

Finally, Prof. Yang briefed key components in Federated Learning including Privacy & Security, Model Design, Incentive, Communication and Distributed ML.

Prof. Jun Wang (City University of Hong Kong, China) was the seventh speaker and his presentation named “Advances in Collaborative Neurodynamic Optimization”. Prof. Wang presented a collaborative neurodynamic optimization framework and multiple neurodynamic optimization models. Finally, Prof. Wang introduced some application including optimal chiller loading in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system.

The eight speaker was Peng Shi (University of Adelaide, Australia) and his presentation named “Cyber-physical Systems: Analysis and Design”. He briefed that CPSs are the central research topic in the era of Industrial 4.0, and continue to be in the forthcoming Industrial 5.0.

Then he briefed the security that was crucial for CPSs (leading to serious security incidents). Prof. Shi also mentioned the different between Security and Safety.

Finally, he discussed the adversarial attacks and autonomous safety autonomy, as well as, overall security CPS analysis and design.

The last speaker was Prof. Qingfu Zhang (City University of Hong Kong, China) and his presentation entitled “Multiobjective Evolutionary Computation based Decomposition”. He said optimization is a basic issue in data science and then introduced to build efficient multiobjective evolutionary algorithms based on decomposition (MOEA/D). Finally, he shared some application in engineering design.

Panel Discussion

Moderator: Sam Kwong(City University of Hong Kong, China)

Panelists:

Xiaohua Jia (City University of Hong Kong, China)

S. Joe Qin (City University of Hong Kong, China)

Hong Yan (City University of Hong Kong, China)

Houmin Yan (City University of Hong Kong, China)

Qiang Yang (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China)

Firstly Prof. Qiang Yang said his professional in machine learning especial in transfer learning. Then he interested in Federated Learning and study how to benefit the global model so as to overcome data privacy.

Then Prof. Xiaohua Jia shared a topic “Incentivised and Secure Data Sharing”. He pointed out three challenges such as lack of a secure platform, secure data analytics and incentive schemes for data sharing. And then he proposed three actions and they are: i) Develop a secure and verifiable data; ii) Design secure data analytics computation that comply with authorization; and iii) Design data valuation and profit-sharing schemes.

And then Prof. S. Joe Qin presented the concern title “Data Intelligence via Data, Knowledge, and Human-In-The-Loop”. He said AlphaGo is not hard because model is a white box and rules are perfectly clear.  He raised data intelligence is data science plus domain knowledge.

After that Prof. Hong Yan discussed “R&D at CIMDA”. CIMDA stands for Centre for Intelligent Multidimensional Data Analysis Limited. He introduced different research topics to us.

Lastly Prof. Houmin Yan discussed how AI applied in financial sector.

At the end, Prof. Prof. Qiang Yang gave a closing remark.
