CityU EngD Society AGM Talk & Dinner

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong (CityU) was held on 1st Mar 2014. Before the AGM talk, Dr. Amie Lai (Chairlady, CityU EngD Society) gave a welcome speech and introduced the EngD Society mission. Then we took a group photo first.

CityU EngD Society AGM's Talk topic named "Experience Sharing from EngD to Adjunct Professor". Dr. WH Fok and I were honorable to share our experience.

I was the first speaker and my topic entitled “Connecting the Dots – From Student to Adjunct Professor”. Firstly, I quoted Steve Jobs statement in Stanford Commencement Address 2005 that “You can’t connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”

I separated my experience into four categories included “Academia”, “Business”, “Community” and “Government”. Finally, I concluded the key elements were: Academic Basic Requirement - EngD, Professional / Social Status, Contribution to CityU and Diligent with Lucky (e.g. HKCTC establishment).

Dr. WH Fok was the second speaker and he shared his experience from High Diploma to Associateship (≈degree) in Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Dr. Fok was through part 2 examination for Council of Engineer Institute (CEI) in UK. When he joined Ove Arup, he had been Training Leader since 2006. Before he studied EngD in SEEM, he had completed the Master degree in the Law School, CityU. Dr. Fok had several teaching experience in HKU, HKUST, Shantou University.

After Dr. Fok graduated in 2007, he was invited by Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, CityU to be Adjunct Professor. Dr. Fok assisted the department to restructure the EngD program and teaching different courses.

After the talks, I briefed some past activities and the executive members.
