Google TensorFlow Workshop of the Education Collaboration for Teachers in GBA

Google TensorFlow Workshop of the Education Collaboration for Tearchers in GBA was held on 17th May 2019 in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre.  This workshop aimed to introduce Google Education Program and TensorFlow technology and skills, share practices between Google and University, and discuss a better education collaboration with teachers in Guanzhou-Hong Kong-Macao. I was honor to be invited to attend this workshop after Google AI Teacher Camp in Jan 2019.  We took a group photo during the break.


I met Dr. Ray Cheung (Director, CityU Apps Lab) and Prof. Francis Wong Man-leung (Associate Professor & Head, Department of Computing & Decision Sciences, Lingnan University).


I took photo with CityU group included Mr. Huang Sizhu (黃思待) (PhD student in CS Dept., CityU) and Dr. Ray Cheung.


Firstly, I went to the venue in School of Software Engineering, South China University of Technology (華南理工大學).


But the location was changed to Southern Club Hotel Business Class (南国会国际会议中心) near Guangdong Pharmaceutical University (广东药科大学).


I took a photo with Google two speakers – Mr. Choozen Wan (Program Manager, University Relations and Education in East Asia, Google) and Mr. Song Zhe (宋哲) (Software Engineer of Google Shanghai).


The first speaker was Mr. Choozen Wan (Program Manager, University Relations and Education in East Asia, Google) and he introduced the most updated services of Google named Google Lens (unlock visual magic) which combined Assistant, Photos and Camera. 


He also demonstrated some videos using mobile only with voice included Live Transcribe, Live Relay and Live Caption. And then briefed new Android for 5G and NEST Hub Max features.  


Mr. Choozen Wan started the topic named “Introduction of Google Education Program”.  Google had signed MoU with Education Bureau in China for 5 years to promoting open source such as android, TensorFlow and Blockly Games, etc. 


 For AI field, they considered AI Ethics, Principles, Fairness, Responsible and AI for Social Good.  Now, their program had collaborated with China, Korea and Japan.  


The Google Education Cooperation Program structure was introduced.  (Google 中国教育合作项目 - http://gur.zucc.edu.cn/ )


Then he briefed the Industry and University collaboration project evaluation process as following diagram.


Mr. Song Zhe (宋哲) (Software Engineer of Google Shanghai) was the second speaker and he introduced the TensorFlow included BERT, OpenAI GPT and ELMo structures.  He also mentioned improving brain MRI with AI and TensorFlow in which using more than 35k images for training by GE Healthcare.  


Then he introduced the development history of TensorFlow since 2015.  Some feedback from users on TensorFlow were discussed and it included “Simplify API”, “Reduce Redundancy” and “Improve docs and examples”.  


After that TensorFlow 2.0 alpha Usability, Clarity and Flexibility were discussed.  The training and deployment structure was showed.  


Finally, Mr. Song stated training workflow with different open source program and database such as tf.data and Keras, etc.   He also introduced different TensorFlow Datasets including audio, image, structured, text, video, etc.  (https://www.tensorflow.org/datasets/add_dataset)


The next session is “Best practice sharing for education collaboration”.  The first invited speaker was Dr. Ray Cheung (Associate Professor, EE Dept., CityU) and he shared his project.  He said that Digital Intelligence (DI) are Global Standards for Digital Literacy, Kills, and Readiness.  


Then he introduced CityU Apps Lab and their project named “We Can Code” since Jan 2014.  


After notice of the State Council on Issuing the Development Plan on the New Generation of Artificial Intelligence issued on July 2017, CityU arranged AI summer course for secondary school. 


Finally, Dr. Ray Cheung shared their Young HoC Instructors program to train the trainer based on the Protégé Effect.


The last speaker was Dr. Chen Chunhua (陳春華) (华南理工大学软件学院) and his topic named “Public Training and Intelligent Building” (眾育實訓與智慧建築).


Firstly, Dr. Chen shared their teaching status.  He said the project for students had continuity that student could catch the knowledge more solid and applicable.  


He said student project needed to be Scenario (场景化) for application and their teaching concept was from on-line to off-line.


Lastly, Dr. Chen shared their Public Training Platform (http://cdx.micerlabs.com/#/home).


I used Ofo to go and back between the venue and the Metro station in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre.


I thanked my cousin to lead me to take Metro for this workshop in afternoon.


When I come back to Guangzhou East Railway Station, it was so many people at 6:00pm.
