Dr. Victor Lo (Vice Chairman - Institute of Systematic Innovation, HK) is an expert in both innovation and quality was our guest speaker. Firstly, Dr. Lo reviewed his teaching experience and how to combine industry practice and theory. After he retired, he would like to contribute to the society and introduced Innovation with passion. His statement indicated the relationship between Quality and Innovation.
“Innovation is an alternate way to the usual, familiar way of quality improvements. It is the means to be the quality leader.” (Dr. Victor Lo, 2011)
Then Dr. Lo reviewed “What is Quality?” using different gurus’ explanation and identified Customer Satisfaction was one of most important factors. After that we discussed “What is Innovation?” Dr. Lo quoted The Economist Magazine that Innovation is now recognized as the single most important ingredient in any modern economy. And he also quoted Peter F. Drucker that Every organization – not just business – needs one core competence: Innovation.
BCG report on Innovation 2010 was discussed and he found that innovation rank in Top priority or Top-three priority in company is upto 71% in BCG senior executive innovation surveys. Moreover, the report said 84% of respondents said their company considers innovation an important or extremely important lever in its ability to reap the benefits of an economic recovery. One example was German innovation that recombining elements of old, stagnant sectors into new, vibrant ones.
Then Dr. Lo said that Innovation is Problem Solving. Moreover, he has a dream that iTQI could be a method that would be universally applied in everybody, everywhere, every day and everything. He focused on problem solving and needed three elements included “Management Support”, “Innovation Methodology” and “Knowledgeable Team”. However, everybody are talking about innovation but nobody want to change!
The new PKIR (問知創行) innovation model was introduced where P – Problem identification, K – Knowledge acquisition, I – Ideation and R – Realization with 50 Flash cards, as well as, standing on the shoulders of TRIZ and People Centered Innovation (PCI) giants. Dr. Lo said the most important element in the house was “Mutual Respect”.
The first version of 50 Flash cards was classified by PKIR but the new version would be classified by its functionality.
PKIR is an iterative process of Creativity.
P – Knowing the problem, may be it is too big, split it down to smaller, is it urgent and important?
K – Search & discover the related knowledge for this application
I – Connecting of disparate ideas and discovery of opportunities
R – Application in the feasible adoption of solutions
The following two diagram demonstrated the path of using flash cards. (It is no need to use all 50 Flash cards. It is depended the need of problem.)
