I joined the Tolomix Networking group to visit Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) on 31 May 2010 and would like to share the event as follows.
In the beginning, Dr. Cheung Nim-kwan (CEO – ASTRI) introduced his team members to us and then briefed the history of ASTRI and its achievement.
ASTRI was founded by the government of HKSAR in 2000. It is the ten anniversary of ASTRI. The mission of ASTRI is to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research.
Dr. Cheung briefed some service in ASTRI including:
- Technology Licensing (Funding: 10% by industry and 90% by government)
- Contract Service (Funding: 100% by industry)
- Industry Collaboration Program (Funding: 50% by industry and 50% by government)
- Spin off
Two thriving spin-offs cases were shared.
1. SAE (TDK) Optoelectronics Limited
2. ALTAI, a start-up High-Tech Venture in Hong Kong
Then, Dr. Cheung mentioned five technological fields in ASTRI:
1. Communications Technologies
2. Enterprise & Consumer Electronics
3. IC Design (EDA platform would be developed through 10% by industry and90% by government)
4. Material & Packaging Technologies
5. Bio-medical Electronics (Focused on Neonatal (Baby) MRI System and MRI Incubator)
After that Dr. Samson Tam gave a remark for this visit and let each participant to introduce himself.
Because I needed to join Briefing Forum on Report of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, I had not visit ASTRI laboratories below:
- Material & Packaging Technologies Demo Room
- Enterprise & Consumer Electronics Laboratory
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging / Antenna Laboratory
However, I would like to share ASTRI demonstration panels located in HKPC.
