PAIR Public Forum for Research and Innovation – DeepSeek and Beyond

The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) hosted its inaugural Public Forum on Research and Innovation, titled “DeepSeek and Beyond”, on 11 Mar 2025. Prof. YANG Hongxia (Asso. Dean of FCMS, Professor of COMP, PolyU) was the guest speaker and she discsussed innovative approaches DeepSeek employed to achieve strong AI capability with smaller models. Before the forum, I took a photo in front of the banner.

I met my student Mr. Sun Chang and took a photo together. He reserved a seat for me and many thanks.

In the beginning, Prof. CHEN Qingyan (Director, PAIR) gave an opening speech.

Then Prof. ZHANG Chengqi (Director, PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute) gave welcome remark.

Prof. YANG Hongxia firstly introduced her background including twice built and led large foundation teams for big techs for ten years. Then she mentioned huge opportunities for GenAI including Healthcare, Finance, Manufacturing, Retail, Media and Fashion.

And then she briefed the history of AI and mentioned her experience when served in Silicon Valley. The forum was packed!

After that she introduced her pioneer tracking records in GenAI from 2021 to now.

Prof. YANG introduced fundamentals and domain specific models for “Pretrain”, supervised fine tuning and reinforcement learning for “Alignment”, as well as, “Scaling Law”.

Finally, she discussed some fundamental challenges in current GenAI solutions including API and Open Sourced Models+RAG. (RAG stands for Retrieval-augmented generation)

A new paradigm of GenAI in OpenAI and Co-GenAI were discussed.

Lastly, she pointed out some application such as cancer foundation model and energy foundation model. Prof. YANG concluded the on-going explorations foundation model including Healthcare, Manufacturing, Energy, Finance and Multimodal Smart Cockpit.
