VTC MTTB Technical Webinar - Introduction and Case Studies of Modern Quality Management Systems for Manufacturing Industries

The VTC webinar named “Introduction and Case Studies of Modern Quality Management Systems for Manufacturing Industries (品質管理的創新概念及在製造業的實踐案例)” was co-organized by Manufacturing Technology Training Board (MTTB), Pro-Act Center of VTC and Group 14 of FHKI on 9^th April 2021. Dr. Aaron Tong and I were honor to be invited as speaker to share our experience in quality management. We took a group photo before the webinar.

Our emceeing is Ms. Jackie Lai. She introduced the whole program and speakers.

Mr. Stanley Cheung (Chairman, MTTB) gave a welcoming speaker and he introduced the mission of Manufacturing Technology Training Board (MTTB) and expected more entrepreneur to employ our young graduates.

Then Mr. Stanley Cheung presented souvenir to us.

I (Chairman, HKSQ) was the first speaker and my topic named “How to apply Extenics for QM (如何將可拓學應用於品質管理)”.

Firstly, I introduced Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and its key milestone for this 35 years.

Then I briefed the development history of Extenics which created by Prof. Cai Wen since 1983.

And then I introduced the three creative methods from Extenics and they were “Create from Nothing” that started from the need of customer; “Change of Existing” that indicating extension possibility of existing product; and “Change from Demerits” that mean to improve the existing product’s demerits.

After that four steps of extension innovation method was stated which included Model, Extension, Transformation and Selection (METS).

The key of model named basic elements in which included Matter-element, Affair-element and Relation-element.

The summary of Extension Innovation Method was in the following table in which could go through the METS process to achieve innovation.

Finally, I discussed some cases which applied Extenics and Extension Innovation Method. The first one is new business model for startup. The second one is online teaching during Covid-19 in CityU last year. The last case using Extenics Six Sigma (ExSS) approach on the automation process of pills package for elders.

During the break, we discussed with the participants onsite and took photo for memory. Dr. Vincent Fung and Dr. YC Chau were also join the webinar.

Dr. Aaron Tong (Managing Director, TQM) was the second speaker and his topic named “Less is More, –Quality Assurance (減法質量保證)”.

Firstly, Dr. Tong briefed the secret how he serviced company got the both quality and productivity grand award because of reduction of inspection. He explained the company employed much effort to enhance the process but without much additional resource involved.

Then Dr. Tong shared his award to be the first China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) in Great Bay Area.

And then he briefed the concept of –QA in terms of Cost of Quality (COQ).

After that he compared the key different factors between traditional QA (+QA) and new concept on “Less is More” (–QA).

Lastly, Dr. Aaron Tong shared some cases in his many consultancy project to demonstrate how to use the new concept “Less is More” for quality improvement and got the great results.
