CityU KTO – AUTM Virtual Course “Startup Business Development” – Class 3

 The 4-day AUTM virtual introductory course on Startup Business Development is organized by the Knowledge Transfer Office of City University of Hong Kong, HKSAR Intellectual Property Department and the Institute for Entrepreneurship of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  The class 3 was held on 15 Dec 2020. Beginning, Prof. Barbara Gunderson (Prof. Dev. Director) introduced the course and speakers. They were Mr. Paul J. Corson (Deputy Director and Sr. Director for Entrepreneurship at the University of Utah’s PIVOT Center) and Professor Keith Marmer (Chief Innovation & Economic Engagement Officer, University of Utah). David Allen was invited for Gap Leader Interview at the end.

In the beginning, the valley of death was introduced. The University Gap Funds and Accelerator Programs employed to fill the gap. 

Then they reviewed Gap Fund and Accelerator Programs in the past 15 years and there were 141 programs involved 84 universities in 2020.  In 2005, they launched Mind the Gap Initiative.  And then they provided Data, Education and Consulting Support from 2005 to 2016. They also launched COA Community of Practice and held first COVERGENCE Summit in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

After that MIND THE GAP – the proof of concept and startup gap funding report was mentioned. The vitals included “Sources of Funding”, “Cost per Project or Investment” and “Initial Fund Size”.

Finally, the whole process had been mentioned in sequence: 1-communicate, 2-intake, 3-evaluation and decision-making and 4-oversight.  Then the poll results were discussed and found that most of startup early stage grants or investment were come from government support (53%) and institutional funds (30%). 

Different support programs under acceleration were briefed.  Other stakeholders included advisory boards, incubators, competitions, corporate/private, and accelerator partnerships.

Lastly, the expected time to impact from initial investment were stated that separated into “Immediate”, “1-3 years”, “3-5 years” and “above 5 years”.  The last poll results were discussed and it showed that most participants had robust suite of mentorship and entrepreneurship education program managed by the institution.

At the end, the overall picture of the talk was showed and discussed included catalyzing the commercialization process, growing an innovation community and attracting capital.
