Presentation of Group Projects and Visit CityU SYE Dept Laboratory

I had teaching a program named “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” in Semester A, 2023/2024 again.  My lectures were in the BEng ITME Programme named “SYE 2066: Professional Engineering Practice” for year 1 students. After teaching the Extension Innovation Methodology, students needed to form a group and then presented their innovation product or service on 27^th Nov 2023. Since the lecture started at 12:00pm, I had early lunch. 

Some presentations were posted including multifunctional tent, Cleaning Robot, Airpods, Phonecase, etc.

Students were discussed during Q&A.

The exercise included professional ethics and safety as the indispensable indicators.

They assisted classmates and team working.

After the lecture, I visited our department laboratory. This set of automation system for intelligent manufacturing.

The whole system had developed for teaching use.

At night, I was honor to be invited to teach the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM). My course named ADSE 6047 “Quality Improvement: Systems and Methodologies” that I taught MSA, Innovative tools including TRIZ, Extenics and Design Thinking. Tonight was group project presentation. Students’ topics included MTR Turnstile, Supermarket checkout, food delivery, telecom and PV modules, etc.

Students also discussed each other.

They employed what they learnt from the course for quality improvement including DMAIC, Lean, FMEA, Extenics, etc.

Advanced Class for I Ching (易經高班) – Lecture 4

Minda and I joined Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) advanced class for I Ching (易經高班) and the course has six lectures and performed biweekly. The Lecture 4 was held on 25^th Nov 2023. We arrived early for breakfast and then assisted Prof. Pang for zoom setting before the class.

In the beginning, Prof. Pang reviewed four difficult hexagrams again and discussed the revolution hexagram (革卦).

Then he briefed the three principles of revolution based on the hexagram that built the Trust, setting the Goal and do it in suitable Timing.

After the revolution hexagram (革卦), it became tripod hexagram (鼎卦) indicating innovation.

And then he briefed different problems and troubles in Hong Kong and its macro factors.

After that Prof. Pang mentioned the different between western and eastern thinking. 

He also compared western and eastern management wisdoms. I Ching is managing the “Change”. Western Management is getting things done through people but Eastern Management is about conducts and ethics. In China, the prerequisites of governance are people and leader.

Finally, Prof. Pang discussed Hong Kong’s society ecosystem and identified the pain points.

Lastly, he proposed strategies for solving those marco factors that needed to transform to innovation economic. 

After the class, classmates had lunch with Prof. Pang together.

HKSQ Quality Month Seminar on Digitalisation

HKSQ organized Quality Month Seminar on Digitalisation on 24^th Nov 2023. The seminar aimed for sharing the concepts and examples of digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation. Digitization refers to the process of converting analogue information into digital format. Digitalization involves leveraging digital technologies to improve processes and enhance business operations. The seminar performed both onsite and online. In the beginning, group photo was taken with guest speaker and our oversea representative Prof. KF Pun.

Dr. Jack Wu (Associate Professor, HSUHK) was the guest speaker and he introduced that Digital Transformation (DT) encompasses the broader organizational shift towards a digital-first mindset and the integration of digital technologies across all aspects of the business.

Then he discussed the DT challenges including technological change budget, skill gap, resources, security risk, organization culture change, legacy system and decision-making.

There was a fruitful discussion on the definition of digitalization, the processes in different industries, and the application of the digitalization framework. Prof. Pun also pointed out the need for digital transformation and the importance of change management. Also, the pros and cons of higher education under the digital transformation have been discussed.

BLC Lab Last Zoom Meeting 2023

The last zoom meeting for BLC Lab project was held on 23^rd Nov 2023. The first zoom meeting was on 3^rd Apr 2023. More than half year implementation that it was completed the accreditation assessment by IAS. 

The last meeting had reviewed all CARs and area for improvements. I also suggested future actions based on people, instrument, material, method, environment and QA. Jenny had completed her project before left. I looked back over the entire project, three consultants left indicating that is tough project! My sword has not old yet.

Hopefully BLC Lab every success in their future development in Macau.

Visit to PolyU Industrial Center

Dr. Walter Fung (CityU EngD cohort) arranged a visit to PolyU Industrial Center for teaching and research facilities on 20^th Nov 2023. Many EngD cohorts joined this visit and I took a photo when we gathered. 

The first visit location is Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE) and we took a group photo in front of the banner. (Middle row right 2^nd - Dr. SC Ho is our leader for Industrial Center.)

Vicent and I enjoyed the 3D virtual environment.

The different 3D virtual environments were demonstrated including city, street, rural area and museum, etc.

And then we went to the AIR Lab that is a brand-new venue in PolyU where educators, makers and researchers from different disciplines can collaborate to apply AI and robots to solve real-world issues.

A robot programmed interaction activities with visitor such as dancing and play Tai Chi (太極).

I met my old friend Dr. C.C. Cheung and took a photo with Dr. Vincent Fung, Dr. Szeto Wing Hong and Dr. Gaby Kun.

After that we went to IoT Maker Lab.

There are many stations and mini 3D printer for students use.

Finally, we visited University Research Facility in 3D Printing. I had visited before in 2021.

Since I have class in evening, I left early. Tonight, I taught design thinking.

Two students formed a group and interviewed each other so as to collect their needs and exercised empathy.

Lastly, I selected some students to present their insight and proposed solutions.
