HKSQ AGM 2017 and Extenics Seminar

HKSQ Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 28 July 2017 and a seminar named “Extenics – A Novel Innovation Theory and Methodology originated in China” was presented by myself.  I would like to share both HKSQ AGM 2017 and Seminar below.  Firstly, Mr. Peter Fung (Immediate Past Chairman, HKSQ) held the meeting and briefed the Chairman report to all members.  Until now, HKSQ has 323 individual members, 2 student members and 11 corporate members (by invitation only).  Then Peter briefed HKSQ activities in 2016/2017 including study mission, technical visit, international networking and student project competition in Sanmina –SCI (China) Limited.


After that I as Hon. Treasurer presented HKSQ financial status in the official report.  We had some surplus in last year. Then I suggested increasing of individual members and high reputation corporate members to get sustainable financial income so as to support our international networking to build our brand continuously.


I was honor to select to be Chairman again for 2017/2018.  Some member gave a slogan “Chairman Return”.  The nominations of Office Bearers in 2017/2018 were shown below.

I shared my vision for coming HKSQ goal that we needed to be youth so as to attract young members and our internal processes enhancement through more IT adoption, as well as, promoting Quality Innovation such as Extenics or other innovation tools and systems.


After that I was the guest speaker in AGM seminar guest speaker and my topic named “Extenics – A Novel Innovation Theory and Methodology originated in China”.  Firstly, I introduced my journey of Extenics Learning since Feb 2016.  I went to the Shenzhen and Guangzhou for several seminars and meetings, as well as, visited the Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, Guangdong University of Technology.

HKSTP Lunch & Learn – The Startup Scene in Hong Kong

HKSTP Lunch & Learn named “The Startup Scene in Hong Kong” was presented by Incubation Team on 26 Jul 2017.  They would like to introduce Hong Kong’s Startup Ecosystem to us.  Some backgrounds of Hong Kong were briefed such as Hong Kong tops the list of freest economics, World’s Most Competitive Economy (IMD), World’s Freest Market for the 22nd Consecutive Year (Heritage Fundation), 2nd in Global FDI Inflows (UNCTAD), etc.


Total number of startups was 1926 in 2016 and increased 24% compared with 2015.  We had 72% of startup related to applying technology and 28% related to innovation concept or business model.  Most of them were both B2B and B2C (52%).  Others were B2B only (32%) and B2C only (16%).

ISI Seminar on Pragmatic Open Innovation (TRIZ)

The seminar entitled "Pragmatic Open Innovation" was organized by and co-organizer by Institute of Systematic Innovation Hong Kong (ISIHK) and The IMSE Department, HKU on 20th July 2017.  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations.  Among numerous TRIZ (Theory for Inventive Problem Solving) tools for innovation, there is a sub-set of pragmatic tools for practically exercising the Open Innovation concept.  Arrived at the venue, I took a photo with guest speaker Dr. Sergei Ikovenko (President of the International TRIZ Association) and ISI exco members and organizers.

In the beginning, Dr. Sergei Ikovenko (President of the International TRIZ Association) briefed the topic “Pragmatic Innovation with TRIZ” and briefed the history of TRIZ development.

ESG Seminar – How to Upgrade Sales Leader’s Strategic Roles for Revenue Breakthrough

The Executive Study Group (ESG) seminar 2017 – Strategy Management and Innovation Series named “How to Upgrade Sales Leader’s Strategic Roles for Revenue Breakthrough was held by the ESG, Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) and the Support and Consultation Centre for SMEs (SUCCESS, ITD) on 21 July 2017.  In the beginning, SUCCESS representative briefed their SME Mentorship Programme. I would like to summarize the seminar for sharing below.  During the break, I took a photo with Dr. Mark Lee for memory.


Firstly, Dr. Mark Lee briefed the history and aims of ESG establishment and then briefed their research on Hong Kong competitiveness, as well as, different program they provided such as CEO Club.  Then he briefed the content included “Incomplete Understanding of Sales Leader’s Job”, “New Environments and Challenges for Sales Leaders”, “5 Hats (Roles) for Sustainable Growth” and “A Week in the Life of Sales Leader with 5 Hats”.

HKSTP TecONE Investment Series Seminar on Crowdfunding

HKSTP TecONE Investment Series seminar named “Crowdfunding: Launching your brand and product globally” was organized by Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) with strategic partner “Hong Kong Business Angel Network” (HKBAN) on 19th July 2017.  The guest speaker was Mr. Ray Sin (Director of International Markets, Crowdcreate) and he shared on the fundamentals of crowdfunding included the differences between the major platforms, customer acquisition and demographic reach.  


In the beginning, Mr. Ray Sin briefed some benefits of crowdfunding for startups included “attract outside investors (VC, seed, angel)”, “Rewards-based vs Equity-based crowdfunding”, “Collect pre-orders”, “Learn about customers”, “Gauge demand for products”, “Market and product validation”, “Brand awareness” and “Retain 100% equity in your company”. He also briefed the bright future of crowdfunding.


HKQAA Startup Coaching to CityU Inno-preneur “HANDS”

HKSTP and HKQAA signed MoU to expand Start-up support.  HKQAA Registration – Startup and HKSTP Quality Startup Management System scheme joined hands to assist HKSTP incubatees to enhance their management skill and increase their recognition for business.  In 2017, HKQAA invested more resource to provide free coaching to our incubatees.  CityU Inno-preneurship startup Mr. Marco So (CEO, Hands Life Science) was invited to attend the coaching.  I was assigned as CityU Inno-preneurship Mentoring by CityU  Knowledge Transfer Office last year.  HANDS was funded by CityU Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) and moved into Science Park recently.  There are four founders (BCH graduates).  I took a photo with Mr. Adam Wong (HKQAA) and three founders for memory.

Mr. Adam Wong briefed the background of HKQAA Registration – Start-ups to Marco and explained 25 questions which included Quality, Finance and Information Security.  Then I explained how HKSTP Corporate Quality Unit could assist them to upgrade their management system through knowledge transfer.

ASQ LMC Hong Kong Seminar “From Process Change to Human Change”

ASQ Local Member Communities (LMCs) Hong Kong organized a seminar named “From Process Change to Human Change” on 14 July 2017 in CityU.  Mr. Simon Tong, Mr. Karson Chui, Ms. Minda Chiang and I were both HKSQ member and ASQ member attended the seminar.  In the beginning, I took a photo with guest speaker (Mr. Jeffrey Yip) and Mr. Simon Tong for memory. In the beginning, Mr. Simon (Chairman, ASQ LMC HK) introduced the guest speaker and the coming events of ASQ LMC Hong Kong.


Mr. Jeffrey Yip was our guest speaker and his topic named “The Law of Change”.  His presentation included “three areas about change”, “how language is important to facilitate change”, “where the motivation factor is and how to dig it out”, and “why mindset is hard to change for some people”, etc.

CityU EngD Cohort and IoT experts visit Science Park Laboratories

I was honor to be invited by CityU EngD cohorts included Dr. Augustine Chow, Dr. Raymond Leung and Dr. Rocky Lam to have lunch with IoT experts on 13 July 2017. Moreover, they are planning to establish company in the Science Park.  After the lunch, I led them to visit our laboratories’ facilities. Firstly, we took a photo in front of the cleanroom in 3D SiP Laboratory.

Since Nico Stey, Anton Musgrave and Wayne Fitzjohn are IoT experts, we visit reliability laboratory first and introduced some testing facilities included shield room for RF testing, 3D printing for prototype, reliability chambers, etc.


Finally, we also visited our Biotech Support Centre to visit our most state-of-art biotech equipment including DNA sequencer and cell counters.

HKSTP Seminar on Practical Patent Searching Skills

HKSTP organized a seminar named “Practical Patent Searching Skills” on 11 July 2017.  Mr. Zephyr Su (Associate, Chinese Patent Attorney, Marks&Clerk) was the guest speaker and he introduced how businesses could utilize patent searches.  He pointed out patent search could help you to understand the following items:
-          What is the cutting-edge technology trend
-          Blue ocean or red ocean
-          Patent strongholds built by your competitors / partners
-          Any threat to your business


Two purposes for patent search were “Validity” and “Freedom-to-operate”.  Validity is indicated that your idea is new and bright.  Freedom-to-operate ensured your product could sale without threat.

HKCTC Seminar on Integrity and Professional Development in Testing and Certification Industry

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC), Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) and ICAC co-organized a seminar entitled “Integrity and Professional Development in Testing and Certification Industry” held on 10th July 2017.  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations.  Professionalism and integrity are foundation of good business and also form part of the core value of Hong Kong’s testing and certification (T&C) industry.  This is the fifth HKCTC seminar on integrity and professional development.  Previous seminar information could be found in the reference.


Before the seminar, all guest speakers took a group photo for memory.


The first speaker was Ms. Anna Lam (Deputy Executive Director of Hong Kong Business Ethics Development Centre, Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)) and her topic entitled “Professional Integrity and Corruption Prevention”.  Her speech included “Importance of Professional Integrity”, “Common Corruption Risks in T&C Industry” and “Three Tests of Professional Integrity”, as well as, “Corruption Prevention Services of ICAC”.

CityU Cohorts lunch in HKU and China first aircraft carrier visit HK

Today, Dr. Aaron Tong (TQM), Dr. Danny Tang (Project Director, HKU; EngD Cohort, CityU) and I had lunch in HKU staff career.  We shared management skill included Lead, TQM and ISO.  Danny would like to assist HKU for organization excellence transformation project that may be employed much quality philosophy.  That’s why I introduced our HKSQ former chairman (also HK quality gurus) Dr. Aaron Tong to him for future cooperation.  Both Danny and Aaron graduated from HKU.


Moreover, the 1st China aircraft carrier visit Hong Kong today and I got a photo and video from Prof. Phillip Chan’s friends’ friend named “Anthony Yeung”.  I posted for sharing.  (The photo and video is recorded rainbow as well.)

Competency-Based Interview (CBI) Skills Refresher Training

CEB was invited to provide refresher training on Competency-based Interview Skills on 6 July 2017. I was one of participants and would like to summarize some key points in the training course.  Mr. Alexander Ng (Team Leader & Senior Consultant, CEB Talent Assessment) was our trainer.  Firstly, Mr. Alexander Ng briefed the course content included “Defining Assessment Criteria”, “Measuring Competencies”, “Competency-based Interview (CBI) Basics”, “CBI Questioning Techniques”, “The ORCE Process” and “Effective Closing”. 


 “Defining Assessment Criteria” is separated into two competencies.  One is Core Competencies and Functional Competencies.  In order to realize your good, you should define the critical competencies that characterize success, then measure these accurately.  Firstly, you need a job analysis included existing job descriptions, structured questionnaires, observation, first-hand experience and interviews/focus groups; as well as, subject matter experts included the job-holder, job-holder’s manager, senior stakeholders and customers.

HKSTP TecONE Investment Series Seminar and Visit IncuBio “HANDS”

HKSTP TecONE Investment Series seminar named “Making Your Business Plan Investor Ready” was organized by Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) with strategic partner “Hong Kong Business Angel Network” (HKBAN) on 5th July 2017.  Since the topic was very useful for startup, I invited CityU Inno-preneurship startup Mr. Marco So (CEO, Hands Life Science) to attend the seminar.  I was assigned as CityU Inno-preneurship Mentoring by CityU  Knowledge Transfer Office last year.  HANDS was funded by CityU Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) and moved into Science Park two months ago.  There are four founders (BCH graduates) and we took a photo in front of their office.

We also took a photo inside their laboratory.  Since I am also their senior classmate in BCH Dept., CityU, I understood their needs and skill missing.  Hopefully, Science Park could provide necessary service to incubate them to be success in near future.


Then I would like to summarize the TecONE Seminar below.  Ms. Uyen La Wiget (Rock Bay) was our guest speaker.  Her topic included Key Components of a Business Plan and Practical Tips.

Visit to Shenzhen Association for Quality (SZAQ) New Office 2017

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) visited Shenzhen Association for Quality (SZAQ) new office (near 八卦岭MTR station) on 3rd July 2017. Shenzhen Association for Quality (SZAQ) which was established in 1987 (where HKSQ established in 1986) and this year was SZAQ 30th Anniversary.  SZAQ is the bridge between Government and Industries (with quality professionals) so as to enhance quality awareness, technology and continuous improvement. The previous visit was 3 years ago (2014).  We took a group photo in front of their brand for memory.

Post-Extenics Seminar Visit to the Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods

After the Extenics Seminar 2017 successful completed, scholars visited the Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods in Guangdong University of Technology (GUT) on 3rd July 2017. Since I had visited on last year, Dr. Aaron Tong represented Hong Kong participants to visit the institute.  The group photo took in front of GUT.


Then they visit the Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods in Guangdong University of Technology (GUT) and Extenics Society under Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) that I was a member of CAAI since 2016.


All participants (included Taiwan, Hong Kong and local scholars) took a photo in front of the institute.

Extenics Seminar 2017 in Guangzhou

The Extenics Seminar 2017 was arranged by Guangdong University of Technology and held from 1 to 3 July 2017.  There had 38 scholars from Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei and China to participate the seminar on 2nd July 2017.  Using this platform, we exchanged our studies and activities on Extenics from each other.  Firstly, we took a group photo for memory.

In the beginning, Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) (Director, Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, Guangdong University of Technology) gave a welcome speech and introduced scholars to us.


Then Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) (Founder of Extenics and The Director of International Academy of Extenics (HK)) gave opening speech.  He briefed the development of Extenics through 30 years and it’s the time for internationalization.


Prof. Liang-Teh Lee (李良德) (Chairman, Tatung University) gave a guest speech.  He told us that they invited Prof. Cai Wen to Taiwan since July 1996 (21 years ago). At that time, Extenics started to be studied in Taiwan.  He said that we faced to Industry 4.0 or the fourth Industry Revolution, Extenics is one of key elements in AI for extending our intelligence. 


Dr. Aaron Tong (Chairman, HKCIE) gave guest speech. He said “Hong Kong can’t sleep anymore and we need to wake up and catch the opportunity”.  He told us that he brought new management system to Hong Kong in 80s to solving the contradiction problem which was to increase production speed and quantity, the quality was sacrificed.  So both product speed & quantity and quality were improved.  The new approach was 6 sigma but it focused on stability (reduce variance).  However, we need innovation and adopt a deviation during stepwise breakthrough.  Extenics is suitable innovation approach to achieve this aim.

Pre-Extenics Seminar Dinner in Guangzhou 2017

On 1st July 2017, it is a good day because of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong return to China.  At that time we went to Guangzhou and prepared to join the Extenics Seminar 2017 on 2nd July 2017.  I arrived at the seminar hotel named Dong Shan Hotel afternoon.


Tonight, the father of the Extenics arranged a welcome dinner with us.  There had scholars from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.  We took some photos for memory.
