CMS1000 Guest Talk – Software Engineering and Applications

I was honor to invite Ir Matthew Tsui (Founder of App2One Limited) to give a talk for the 1st year students in the course CMS1000 - Computer and Mathematical Sciences Professionals in Society under Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) on 8th Sep 2026. The objectives of CMS1000 are to introduce students to variety of professions, enthuse students about their major study and engage students in desirable forms of university learning. It is the 1st lecture that my guest’s named “Software Engineering and Applications”.

In the beginning, Ir Matthew Tsui gave self-introduction about his different roles including engineer, teacher and entrepreneur.

Then he introduced different concepts on development, engineering, programming as well as product team, etc.

After that he briefed the Waterfall vs Agile, Secure Software Development Life Cycle (SSDLC) and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI).

Finally, he discussed the AI revolution and concluded “One hero is development. A team is engineering.”, “One person cannot win a hourse.”, and “Idea. Objective. Value.”

The last part was presented by his company’s intern Ms. Faria. She introduced her product named “TelePotter” which is an immersive VR learning application.

She pointed out the pain point of teachers such as passive 2D learning, VR takes forever to build and Non-tech teachers locked out. Finally, she proposed a solution for any teacher and anywhere using AI that upload what your already have and AI builds the world fast, so that students explore by doing. She analyzed that product should win the other competitors.

Finally, Dr. Ryo Liao, Dr. Adam Leung and I represented FCMS to present certificate and souvenir to guest speakers.

Visit to ALTAI for starting COMP Student's Capstone Project 2026

I lead my students Mr. KWOK Chi Hei, Henry and Mr. LEUNG Chung Pang, Jasper to visit the (ALTAI) on 8th Sep 2026. It is a new capstone project named “Design and Development of AI-Driven Log Investigation System Using Retrieval-Augmented Generation and Large Language Models”. The project aims to design and implement a log analysis tool that combines Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and LLM Fine-tuning to automatically analyze raw logs and reconstruct incidents in a structured, traceable manner. We appreciated Mr. Ken Leung (CEO, ALTAI) and Mr. Jason Leung (CTO, ALTAI) who support the student project in Department of Computing, PolyU. We took a group photo for memory.

(Left: Dr. YC Chau, I, Mr. Jasper Leung, Mr. Ken Leung, Mr. Henry Kwok, Mr. Sharmus Chu and Mr. Jason Leung)

In the beginning, Mr. Ken Leung introduced the background of ALTAI.

They provided reliable connectivity for different clients.

Finally, he briefed overall end-to-end solution in their super WiFi service.

After that Mr. Jason Leung and Mr. Sharmus Chu introduced their log systems and problems to students. It is a very good kick-off meeting for this capstone project.

Finally, Dr. YC Chau and I had tea in PolyU before my class COMP1000 at night.

The First Lecture of SYE2066 in CityUHK (Dongguan) 2026

Prof. YC Chau and I serviced CityUHK (Dongguan) for the class of SYE 2066 “Professional Engineering Practice” and the first lecture was held on 5th Sep 2066. We arrived the campus and took a photo for memory.

We met Prof. Ron Kwok and to have lunch together.

Our office located in coworking space Room0541 in AC4.

There is a gym here.

We visited the music room too.

And then we settled in the CityU(DG) Lodge.

We found the Chengxian Road that is the Chinese name of CityU Eminence Society.

Walk around after the dinner.

On Saturday morning, we had breakfast in the student canteen.

The first class we introduced ourselves to year 2 students.

Prof. YC Chau’s learning approach was introduced using the formula “L = P + Q” stands for “Learning = Programmed Knowledge + Questioning insight”.

Then I introduced myself and shared through connecting the dots.

Starting the lecture, YC showed a video to explain “Do the thing right vs Do the right thing”.

And then student 2min self-introduction.

Finally, YC introduced different management and quality tools that are commonly used in the industry.

At the end, we took a group photo with students.

We had lunch near YC’s Dongguan home.

Thanks for YC’s lunch.

After that I took Metro to go to the Humen Railway Station.

And then took High Speed Rail to go to Shenzhen North Station.

High Speed Rail is fast and on time.

Finally, I took Metro to go to Futian Port and back to HK.

Visit to MonoTx for starting COMP Student’s Capstone Project 2026

I lead my student Mr. KO Ka Ming, Kenny to visit the Mononuclear Therapeutics Ltd. (MonoTx) on 3rd Sep 2026. It is a new capstone project named “AI-Powered Automated Identification and Counting of Immunostaining Corneal Cells for Research and Product Development”. We would like to design and build a custom AI tool to automate the accurate identification and quantification of immunostaining corneal cells. We appreciated Dr. Wendy Cheng (COO, MonoTx) who support the student project in Department of Computing, PolyU.

Then Dr. Wendy Cheng and Ms. Mirinda Choi introduced their project operation to us.

After that we visited MonoTx laboratory.

Finally, we took a photo with Mirinda for memory.

After the visit, Kenny and I went back to PolyU and had lunch together.

Visit to Vitargent Biotechnology for starting COMP Student’s Capstone Project 2026

I lead my student Mr. CHEUK Chak Kai, Jason to visit the Vitargent (International) Biotechnology Limited on 2 Sep 2026. It is continuous the previous capstone project named “AI-powered system to automate the detection of developmental defects in zebrafish embryos”. We would like to enhance previous ML model to be usable application for the company.

Then Dr. Xueping Chen introduced their laboratory daily operation.

She demonstrated and explained some case studies. There were many goldfish tanks with zebra fish there. But most of the lab work has moved to Guangzhou.

Dr. Chen then demonstrated a very simple program called "ImageJ" as an example. We hope our applications can be as simple as ImageJ.

Some images from testing and counting results were explained.

Finally, we took a group photo inside the laboratory.

Before the visit, Minda and I invited Dr. Xueping Chen to have lunch together in the restaurant named “Kodette” in 17W Science Park.

Leader 2030 - The 5 Traps of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the Balanced Scorecard (II)

Then he introduced the trap three named “Not Setting the Right Performance Targets”. Sometimes, the individual performance targets were contradiction and not benefited to the overall financial performance.

For example, short-term focus results may be damage but it improved long-term financial target.

The fourth trap named “Validity and Reliability”. Measuring indicators should be correct and representative.

The fifth trap entitled “Sticking to Your Numbers Too Long”. Based on company status and development, KPIs should be changed. The challenge is performance assessment systems evolved behind the business development.

Finally, Dr. Mark Lee introduced the strategy maps and briefed the “Fundamentals of a Strategy”.

Four levels to link KPIs to Strategy based on BSC are Financial, Customer, Internal Process and Learning & Growth Perspectives. It demonstrated the link of cause-and effect chain, as well as, visual framework provided.
