HKSQ Special Meeting for Bank Issue

Today, Prof. Fugee Tsung, Ms. Sunny Meng and I met in Hang Seng Bank in CityU at 4:00pm for HKSQ bank issue.  We took a photo for memory.

We brought with AGM minutes and Certificate of Incorporation as backup info. Since Hang Seng Business Banking Centre replaced the CityU branches or other branches function for company account such as cheque issues or signature change, we found that it was very inconvenience and time consuming!

HKSQ Former Chairman visit South African Quality Institute (SAQI)

Dr. KS Chin (Former Chairman, HKSQ) visited South African Quality Institute (SAQI) and the University of Pretoria on 29^th Oct 2018.  He met Mr. Paul Harding (Executive Director at South African Quality Institute) in the office of SAQI.  

Mr. Paul Harding is my old quality friend and we met in IAQ World Quality Forum in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

 I remembered that Mr. Paul Harding invited me to re-issue my article named “Quality as a Service – Testing and Certification Industry in Hong Kong” into their electronic newsletter entitled “e Quality Edge”for their South African readers in 2011.

We expected to have more cooperation between HKSQ and SAQI in future.

HKQAA Seminar on ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems

Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) organized the seminar named “ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System” on 26^th Oct 2018. The new version of ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) standard was released in Aug 2018.  The seminar aimed to discuss how to transite from ISO 50001:2011 to 2018 version and its major difference between these two standards. In addition, guest speaker was invited to share the good practice of energy management so as to enhance sustainability performance.  Before the seminar, I took a photo with Mr. Jacky Yeung who is my old friend in HKQAA more than 15 years!

I also meet Mr. Richard Tse (Former Chairman, MI Division HKIE; Director, Allied Rich Asia Limited) and took a photo for memory too.  Now, he is a professional consultant providing multi-discipline management systems consultancy service.

The first speaker was Ms. Ivy Leung (Manager, Market & Technology, HKQAA) and her topic named “Major Changes and transition to ISO 50001:2018”.  

Firstly she mentioned the model - PDCA Cycle of ISO 50001:2018 in the new version of standard which was similar to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015.  The new version of ISO 50001 was followed ISO High-Level Structure. Then Ivy mentioned the change of “Terms and Definition”.  There were 5 old terms removed and 5 new terms added in 2018 version.

Visit to MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node

Today, I visited MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node after my lecture to CityU BEng SEM students and I met Ms. Angel Lai (Senior Manager, Industry Liaison) here.  We took a photo in from of MIT banner (in Chinese) for memory.

We discussed the cooperation and collaboration with CityU Apps Lab (Local student) and Hong Kong Society for Quality (Industry experts) for future events.  Ms. Angel Lai introduced their vision as follows:

-          To enrich the educational experiences of MIT and Hong Kong students, working together with others in the Hong Kong community, by creating new opportunities to study and practice methods of accelerated innovation.

-          To foster and champion innovation in academic, commercial, and social communities, both locally and globally, through the Node’s efforts in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.

Then I also introduced HKSQ service on local students including HKSQ Company-based Student Project Competition, Seminar/Visit, as well as, University course accreditation for CQE, SSGB, CQLabS, etc.

I had visited MIT during stated in Boston after ASQ World Conference in 2011.

CityU Guest Lecture for BEng SEM Students

I was honor to be invited by Dr. KS Chin (Asso. Professor, SEEM, CityU) to give a talk named “Total Quality Engineering and its development in Hong Kong” to the first year students of BEng Systems Engineering and Management (BEng SEM) on 22^nd Oct 2018. 

In the beginning, Dr. KS Chin introduced some basic principles of quality management including TQM; and then introduced me as Adjunct Professor in SEEM, CityU and had worked in Science Park for more than 10 years.

Firstly, I introduced Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) vision, mission, value and history. Then I briefed the quality innovation development in Hong Kong based on different associations and awards, as well as, government established status bodies to explain from Quality aspects to Innovation aspects. 

And then I introduced the Quality Professional Development Model that HKSQ to fill the gap between talent from university generated and industry need.  We provided different certificates & training including HKSQ Six Sigma Green Beth and Black Belt, Quality Manager & Engineer, Laboratory Specialist as well as GMP Professional.  

After that I mentioned the China and Hong Kong policies on quality and innovation.  In China, there were One Belt One Road, Great Bay Area and Made in China 2025, etc.  In Hong Kong, we had Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in the Lok Ma Chau Loop and Re-industrialization, etc.  Quality Innovation definition and meaning was also described. I briefed the history development of quality and innovation tools included Brainstorming, Creatology, Six Thinking Hats, Thinkertoys, Design Thinking, TRIZ and USIT, as well as Extenics.

CityU Seminar on Key Elements of a Business Plan for a Start-up Company

I had attended Prof. Asad M. Madni seminar named “Key Elements of a Business Plan for a Start-up Company” which was organized by College of Science and Engineering, City University of Hong Kong on 19^th Oct 2018.  Entrepreneurship is the engine of economic growth.  Technologist, faculty members, graduate students, and other visionaries keep on developing concepts, products, and service that are revolutionary and continue to define the evolution of our society.  This seminar introduced the key elements as well as simple yet powerful approach to develop a successful business plan for a start-up company.  Before it, I took a photo with Prof. Madni.

The group photo was taken with all participants at the end.  Prof. Hong Yan (Dean, College of Science and Engineering, CityU) (Left 3 in 1^st row) and Dr. Ray Cheung (Asso. Professor, Dept. of EE, CityU; Director, CityU Apps Lab) (Left 5 in 1^st row) were also here.

In the beginning, Dr. Ray Cheung introduced the background of speaker Prof. Asad M. Madni who is a visionary and highly successful executive to lead two enormously successful companies: Systron Donner Corporation and BEI Technologies Inc.  He is currently an Independent Consultant; Distinguished Adjunct Professor and Distinguished Scientist of Electrical & Computer Engineering at UCLA; and Executive Managing Director & Chief Technology Officer of Crocker, a San Francisco based private venture firm specializing in emerging technologies.  

Firstly, Prof. Asad M. Madni (Distinguished Adjunct Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles) asked us a question why so little startup success.  You needed to go out to raise money and CEO of investment could give you only 15 min for you to present your idea. 

HKETA Symposium on Innovation & Technology 2018 (Part 2)

Hong Kong Electronics & Technologies Association (HKETA) Symposium on Innovation & Technology 2018 was co-organized with HKTDC on 13^th Oct 2018.  The symposium separated into two parts.  Part 1 named AI Empowerment – Grow without Limits on 13^th Oct 2018 (whole day) and Part 2 named Technologies & Success Applications in An Age of AI on 16^th Oct 2018 (Morning).  I attended the Part 2 on 16^th Oct 2018 and took a photo in front of the banner.

Today, MTR had signal problem in four lines.  Even though I left early at 8:15am but I arrived the venue at 11:00am.  (Symposium started at 10:30am)  I was lucky that I attended all speakers’ speech.  The photo showed the MTR exit in Hung Hom station.

The first speaker was Mr. Mick Spiers (VP, Thales Revenue Collection Systems, Thales Group) and his topic named “Artificial Intelligence and Smart Mobility Solutions”.

Mr. Spiers introduced Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and its Mobility Service Platform structure.  

Finally, he briefed the role of AI in Mobility with different applications.

Mr. Samuel Lo (General Manager, NVIDIA AI Technology Center, Hong Kong) was the second speaker and his presentation entitled “Revolutionizing Smart City with AI”. Firstly, Mr. Lo introduced the Era of AI through video and then briefed the foundation of the smart city.

HKPC Smart Enterprise Practical Training

Smart Enterprise Practical Training series were organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) on 4^th & 24^th Sep and 15^th & 29^th Oct 2018.  I attended the training on 15^th Oct 2018 and summarized it as follows. In the beginning, HKPC Fraunhofer Certified i4.0 expert & trainer - Mr. Lyan Law (Lead Consultant, HKPC) was the first speaker and he introduced the whole training series, as well as, Hong Kong Federation of Innovative Technologies and Manufacturing Industries (FITMI).

Then Mr. Law introduced the INC Invention Centre – The Hatch opening on 11^th Oct 2018 and issued the first certificate for 1i to pilot company.  HKSAR CE had also attended after her policy address announcement on that morning.  

The second speaker was Mr. Henry Kwan (Trio Engineering) and he shared his local i4.0 case.  He introduced his company background that EMS provider established in 1983 and listed in HKEX in 2017.  He also briefed their product type evolution in three generations as follows:

1^st Generation – Winding & Transformer

2^nd Generation – PCBA and Assembly

3^rd Generation – Power supply & Security devices

Then he explained why they needed to go to i4.0 because of competitiveness, Branding and Global Trends. Strategic framework of i4.0 included Business Operation & Production, ICT and Enterprise Innovation.

I met Mr. David T.W. Chung (Principal Consultant, InnoEdge Consulting Ltd.) and we took a photo in his exhibition booth.  They located in the startup exhibition supporting service area.  

In the beginning, Ir. Victor Choi (Chairman of HKETA) gave welcome remarks.  He said AI is a very hot topic in 2018 and hope the symposium would bring more insights about technology advancement.  

The Honourable Nicholas W. Yang (GBS, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSARG) gave opening remarks.  He introduced recently I&T policy to support industry from upstream (University research) to downstream (Smart production).  He expected hi-tech and less land required industry in Hong Kong expecially AIR (AI and Robotic).

成功必不在我，奮鬥有我足跡。

今天是我服務科技園近15年 (欠兩個月) (11年10個月加3年顧問)的最後一天。我用「成功必不在我，奮鬥有我足跡。」作為總結。(Success will not be with me, but struggle will have my footprints.)

之前羅太出席最後一次董事局會議與傳媒茶敍引用已故民主黨元老司徒華的名言「成功不必在我，功成其中有我」，總結4年來擔任創科推手的工作。名言是在華叔的回憶錄《大江東去》自序中說：「從孔夫子到孫中山，都沒有看見自己的信念的實現。看不看見並不重要，重要的是終身堅持，這也正是我一向所秉持的『成功不必在我，功成其中有我』。」

原來「成功不必在我」這句話來源於1932年6月胡適給北京大學畢業生的講話。

「…朋友們，在你最悲觀最失望的時候，那正是你必須鼓起堅強的信心的時候。你要深信：天下沒有白費的努力。成功不必在我，而功力必不唐捐。能夠永遠有這樣的信心，自然也是好的。」

因不能與之前勁人們相比，所以改為「必不在我」，以下是我在公司ISO的里程碑。

感謝實驗室同事們在上星期四的farewell party，我們很久沒有那麼齊人。(4^th Oct 2018)

Meeting with BCH Junior Classmate in Science Park

Today, I met Dr. Alice K.Y. Chan (Scientific Director, Labway Biotechnology Ltd.), who was my BCH Junior Classmate, in Biotech Support Centre, Hong Kong Science Park.  Dr. Alice Chan was student of Prof. H.L. Kwong in Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH), CityU.  BCH Dept. had been changed name to Department of Chemistry (CHEM) in 2017. We took a photo for memory.

Her company developed sea cucumber capsules for health and could resistant of cancer per his boss said (Mr. Victor Sit, Founder of Labway Biotechnology Ltd.).  They also interested in developing Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) using blood of Horseshoe Crab for endotoxin testing which could replace Rabbit Pyrogen Test.  I had attended HKIE seminar named “Medical Devices and Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) Testing” in 2008.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Professional Management Association (深港專業管理學會) Annual Dinner 2018

I was invited by Prof. Philip Chan (Founding Chairman, IPostdocA) to attend the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Professional Management Association (深港專業管理學會) (SZHKIPMA) annual dinner cum Ceremony of the 69^th anniversary of RPC establishment on 6^th Oct 2018. I took a photo in the banner for memory.

Since Prof. Chan didn’t feel well on that day, I gave his students’ certificates and ANQ Congress Proceedings to Dr. Yau Pak Man (Postdoc (UQAM / CAG); South China Chairman, IPostdocA).  And then we took a photo.

I met Dr. Cook Chiu (President & CEO, Leoco (HK) Ltd. & Leoco (Dong Guan) Electronics Co., Ltd.) and he had a plan to establish factory in Eastern Europe and R&D pilot production in Hong Kong. Since his product characteristics had high variety and low volume, as well as, Dr. Chiu would like to develop high-tech i4.0 production, it was found very suitable for locating in Advance Manufacturing Centre in HKSTP which was slated to open in 2021.

Dr. WK Lo was Honor Chairman of SZHKIPMA.

After ceremony of the the 69th anniversary of RPC establishment and performed the National Song, all committee members and guest to a group photo.

Dr. Lo had gave a greeting speech.

And then he performed music using Saxophone to us.

The song named “Moon represented my heart” (月亮代表我的心).
