HKSQ Congratulate to Dr. Aaron Tong awarded China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) 2017 and visit Beijing Industries

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) arranged a two-day trip to Beijing for congratulating our former chairman – Dr. Aaron Tong awarded China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) and two technical visits included Beijing Sanyuan Foods Co.,Ltd. (北京三元食品股份有限公司) and Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. (北京福田康明斯發動機有限公司) on 12^th & 13^th April 2018.  The celebration was held on 12^th April 2018 Morning, HKSQ team took a group photo in front of the banner in the China Association for Quality (CAQ) building.

Dr. Aaron Tong was arranged to take a group photo with other awardees outside.

At that time, we took a photo with CAQ friends.  We took a photo with Ms. Duan Yihong (段一泓) (Under Secretary, CAQ).

Then Minda and I took a photo with Ms. Wang Li-Lin (王麗林) (Director, International Exchange Department, CAQ)

I met my old friend Mr. Li Wencheng (李文成) (previous Director, Strategy & Development Department, International Excellence Quality Research Center, CAQ).

In the beginning, Dr. Duan Yonggang (段永剛) (Secretary General, CAQ) introduced the awards for China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) and the 1^st China Outstanding Quality Craftsmen (中國質量工匠).  Then he introduced all awardees and CAQ top managements.

Firstly, Mr. Jia fuxing (賈福興) (Chairman, CAQ) gave a welcome speech. 

The list of China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) and the 1st China Outstanding Quality Craftsmen (中國質量工匠) were stated in the magazine named “Quality”.

Dr. Aaron Tong was the first one received the award of the China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) from Hong Kong.  Mr. Fang changan (国务院国资委行业协会商会党建工作局副局长方长安) (Left in photo) presented the award to Aaron.

Remember Prof. Yoji Akao - Father of Quality Function Deployment (QFD)

This is very sad news about Prof. Yoji Akao who was the founder of Quality Function Deployment (QFD), passed away at 88 years old on 24 Oct 2014.  We, Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ), expressed hearty condolences to Prof. Yoji Akao 's family, friends and colleagues.  Prof. Yoji Akao is the first winner of the Ishikawa-Kano Award (IKA) in ANQ Congress Delhi 2010 (from 19-20 Oct 2010).

We met Prof. Yoji Akao many times in different conference.  I would like to share our meeting to remember Akao – Quality Guru.

HKSQ Quality Philosophies Series – Deming Workshop

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) is celebrating its 30^th Anniversary in 2016.  One of the activities to commemorate this occasion is the first seminar of our Quality Philosophies Series featuring Deming, Juran and Crosby which held on 9 April 2016.  Then we arranged a Deming Workshop on 3 July 2016 and the trainer was Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) who was the first people I knew in Hong Kong attended Dr. Deming famous 4 Days Training Course named “Methods for Management of Productivity and Quality” in USA in 1987.  Since Deming’s theory established 30 years ago, Aaron would review that theory with us in modern management perspective.

Before the seminar, I (Former Chairman, HKSQ) introduced our flagship event named “The 1^st World Summit for Chinese Quality” and the post-summit innovation seminar entitled “Introduction and Application of Extenics” on 8 & 9 July 2016, respectively.  Extenics was Chinese original innovation methodology developed by Prof. Cai Wen for 30 years.

Remember Armand V. Feigenbaum from TQC to TQM

We lost a great quality guru Armand V. Feigenbaum, who passed away on 12 November 2014, at the age of 92. He was a world renowned quality guru and author of the multi-edition book on “Total Quality Control” first published in 1961. He had been active in promoting quality as a vehicle for achieving performance excellence in businesses and industry by advocating the practice of “Total Quality Control” (TQC), later known as “Total Quality Management” (TQM). Amongst his numerous involvements in professional bodies, he served as President of ASQ for two consecutive terms in years 1961 to 1963. Moreover, he was granted ASQ 1965 Edwards Medal in recognition of "his origination and implementation of basic foundations for modern quality control".

I have his famous book “Total Quality Control” in third edition in 1991.

Mr. Gregory H. Watson (Past-President and Fellow of the American Society for Quality; President of the International Academy for Quality) has written an article named “Feigenbaum’s Enduring Influence” in Quality Progress in 2005. He said Feigenbaum has been a role model for managerial innovation and its implementation. Feigenbaum has earned a unique place in the history of engineering through his definition, advancement and execution of the principles of TQM.

Feigenbaum combined academic theory with practical performance to reform his ideas into his approach and highligths of his career were showed in the following diagram. (Form Gregory H. Watson article page 53)

It is a great loss in the quality world!

Remember Academician Liu Yuanzhang (劉源張) - Father of Quality Management in China

This is very sad news about Prof Liu Yuanzhang passed away at age of 89 on the evening of April 3, 2014. We, Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) expressed hearty condolences to Prof Liu Yuanzhang's family, friends and colleagues.

We met Prof. Liu Yuanzhang in ANQ 2011 in Vietnam and He was awarded Ishikawa-Kano Award (IKA) of Asian Network for Quality in 2011. (Left: Prof. Liu Yuanzhang and Prof. Noriaki Kano)

Prof. Liu Yuanzhang was elected as academician of International Academy for Quality in 1995 and academician of China Academy of Engineering 2001. His major contribution to theory and practice of quality and engineering science in career of over 60 years includes:

1. Initiate TQM in China with milestones of establishing quality control research group at operation science research division, mechanics institute of CAS in 1957, introducing TQM in 1976, jointly establishing CAQ in 1979, assisting in issuing of Interim Measures for TQM in Industrial Enterprise in 1980 and Quality Revitalization Outline in 1996, etc.

2. Strive for development and promotion of quality management standards with milestones of appointing as director of QM Standardization Technical Committee (TC151) in 1988 and China’s representative of ISO TC176 in 1995, assisting in issuing of QMS standards of GB/T19000-ISO9000 (1989, 1994 and 2000 versions) and Criteria for Performance Excellence of GB/T19580-2004.

3. Insist in education at frontline and by various channels with milestones of introducing TQM into China at newspaper in 1977, conducting TQM lecture at China National Radio and China Central Television in 1980.

HKSQ representatives took a photo with Prof. Liu Yuanzhang in Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) Congress 2011 in Vietnam. It was my last memory with Prof. Liu Yuanzhang.

HKSQ and others Chinese professionals will continue Prof. Liu Yuanzhang work to promote quality management and theory in China and the world, especially through Chinese Quality Forum (CQF).

Remember Dr. Genichi Taguchi, Creator of Taguchi Method

This is a very sad news to inform you that Dr. Genichi Taguchi (Honorary Member of JSQC, ASQ and IAQ), who was a great pioneer in the application of DOE for quality improvement, passed away on June 2nd, 2012. He was 88 years old (1924 - 2012). Noriaki Kano, Honorary Chairperson of ANQ, informed us that we lost the great star on 7 June 2012. All quality communities (included ANQ, ISQM, KSQM, ISQ, HKSQ, VQAH, QPSP, SQI, IAQMA, CSQ, CAQ, SQAT, etc.) expressed their hearty condolences to Dr. Taguchi's family, friends and colleagues.

Remembering, HKSQ ex-chairmen met Dr. Genichi Taguchi in the 16th Asia Quality Symposium (16AQS), which was held in Tokyo on November 15th and 16th, 2002. They attended Taguchi's tutorial on "Quality Engineering as a Strategy for Research & Development". The 16ASQ was the first step towards the establishment of the Asian Network for Quality (ANQ). Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of the regional organizations represented on the Programme Committee of the event.

My first Martial Arts Novel named Quality Alchemist – ISO scroll (in Chinese) published in 2006. It introduced different quality gurus and their principles in terms of Ku Fung (e.g. Taguchi's Quality Loss Function, Signal to Noise Ratio and Design of Experiment). The Quality Gurus included Dr. W. Edwards Deming, Dr. Joseph Juran, Philip Crosby, Armand V. Feigenbaum, Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa, Shigeo Shingo, Yoshio Kondo and Dr. Genichi Taguchi, etc. Moreover, It was presented in HKU Quality Management Student Forum on 13 April 2011 and my topic named "Sharing the Quality Principles in Martial Arts Novel".

It is a great loss in the quality world. On behalf of HKSQ, we extend deep and heartfelt sympathy to Dr. Taguchi and his family. I sure Dr. Taguchi will live in the heart of every quality professional.

Quality Guru changed the world

It is a very good summary for quality gurus in ASQ journal - Quality Progress entitled ''Guru Gide" in Nov 2010. I would like to introduce the six quality leaders as follows.

Walter A. Shewhart (1891-1967)

He was known as the father of statistical quality control. Quality control chart and Shewhart cycle (Plan-do-check-act) are famous.

W. Edwards Deming (1900-1993)

Deming's important trip to Tokyo, Japan was in June 1950. He taught statistical methods to 45 managers whose invited by the president of the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE). His famous work included Deming cycle (Plan-do-study-act) and the book entitled "Out of the Crisis".

Joseph M. Juran (1904-2008)

He wanted to encompass the human side of quality. His famous philosophy included Juran trilogy - Planning, Control and Improvement, and Quality Control Handbook.

Kaoru Ishikawa (1915-1989)

His most famous quality tool called Ishikawa diagram (also known as the fishbone / cause and effect diagram). Moreover, one of his major accomplishments was starting the Japanese quality circle movement in 1962 (so call Quality Control Circle - QCC).

Philip B. Crosby (1926-2001)

Crosby famous concepts included "Doing it right the first time" and "Zero Defects". His famous books are "Quality Is Free" and "Quality Without Tears".

Armand V. Feigenbaum (1922- )

He coined the term total quality control which is a foundation of modern management. His best selling book also called "Total Quality Control" and first published in 1961.

Three Quality Gurus have long life

Recently, Juran has passed away at 103 years old. He is the longest life among quality gurus.
Eventhough it is no scientific evidence about life and studying of quality, the following 3 quality professionals are comparative long live.

Dr. W. Edwards Deming is known as the father of the Japanese post-war industrial revival and was regarded by many as the leading quality guru in the United States. He passed away on December 20, 1993 at the age of 93.

Philip B. Crosby, who championed the zero-defects concept and preached that “quality is free,” has 75, passed away on August 18, 2001.

Dr. Joseph M. Juran, noted author and "father" of modern day Quality Management, passed away on February 28, 2008, from natural causes. He was 103 years old, and was physically and mentally active until his death
