CityU CHEM Alumni Gathering 2026

I met my senior classmate, Dr. Kent Lau. I remember he was only one part-time PhD student in the lab at that time, I believe it's because he worked in a government laboratory.

Then I took a photo with Prof. Andy Siu and Prof. Vincent Ko.

Mr. Otto Chan (Director, Business Development & Alliance, Synmosa) is my junior classmate. We always met in the BCH laboratory when I was MPhil student.

Before start the dinner, we took a group photo with Prof. Kenneth Leung (My classmate in AP & BCH) for memory.

We took a selfie before dinner.

In the beginning, Prof. ZHU Guangyu (Head of CHEM) gave welcome speech and reported CityU and CHEM department’s international achievement.

Tonight's keynote speech was given by Dr. Zhou Hongwei (周宏偉, 南方医科大学深圳医院院长) , who was a PhD graduate of CityU in 2006. He appreciated Prof. Nora TAM training on bacteria in mangroves.

After that Prof. Wang Xin (Dean, College of Science), Prof. Kenneth Leung (VP, Research), Prof. ZHU Guangyu (Head of CHEM) presented souvenir to Dr. Zhou Hongwei and took a group photo.

The professors at the head table toasted all the guests.

During the dinner, it has game to make friends with alumni using WeChat.

I took a photo with Ms. Crystal Wan, the event organizer, who arranged the event very well.

I met Dr. Larry Lo and three girl alumni who had been my students in the MSc in Environment Management and Technology. I taught the course named “BCH 6116: Quality and Environment Management for Laboratory".

Otto and I took a photo with Prof. Wang Xin.

Group photo in table 2

There is a group photo of all the guests at the tables.

I keep the email announcement for memory.

There were ten alumni tables at the event. I noticed that most of them were PhD graduates, since the event was being held in Shenzhen.

Remark: I completed my HD (Applied Science), BSc (AP) and MPhil (BCH) in 1992, 1994 and 1997, respectively. I would like to give a brief history of the BCHem. The Department of Applied Science was established in 1987 with four science disciplines namely Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics and Materials Science. Then the Department of Applied Science (AP) was separated into Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH) and Department of Physics and Materials Science (AP) in 1993. City Polytechnic of Hong Kong (CPHK) had upgraded to City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in 1994. After that BCH Dept. changed name to Department of Chemistry (CHEM) in 2017 and Department of Physics and Materials Science had already separated into Physics Dept. (PHY), and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Dept.

CityU CHEM Alumni Gathering 2025

The CHEM Alumni Gathering 2025 was held tonight at the Faculty Lounge (27th Jun 2025). My wife and I joined the event. I arrived early and took a picture at the main entrance; it was time for graduation ceremony.

I met my HD classmate Prof. Kenneth LEUNG and took a photo for memory. He taught in HKU for many years and come back to CityU as Chair Professor in the department of Chemistry (CHEM).

I met Prof. Vincent KO and Prof. ZHU Guangyu (Head of CHEM). I also met my two junior classmates who had attended my Laboratory Accreditation course (cooperated with HKSQ) long time ago. Dr. Ron NG (Co-Founder, Director, CEO, NerOcean) and Dr. Larry Lo (Senior Engineer, Ka Shui Group). Dr. Larry Lo’s previous boss Benson is our common friends in CMA Testing.

In the beginning, Prof. Andy SIU gave welcome speech.

So many young alumni joined the gathering!

Then Prof. ZHU Guangyu (Head of CHEM) gave a key notes and introduced some achievement in CHEM.

After that we took a group photo.

Minda and I took a photo with Prof. Any SIU, Prof. Kenneth LEUNG and Dr. Jinping Cheng (Assistant Professor, Dept of Science & Environmental Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong).

I met Ms. Fay Lo again and she served as HSSE & Sustainability Manager (IP&E GBA Ltd). I also met Mr. Tony Chung (Environmental Manager, Chevalier (Construction) Co. Ltd.) who joined HKSQ activities before.

Our alumni gathering and dinner were very enjoyable. When I left, I took a photo with CityU decorations.

CityU CSCI Mentorship Programme – Networking Event 2025

I was great to be invited to participate the networking event organized by the College of Science (CSCI) Mentorship Programme on 22nd Mar 2025. The event aimed to visit a new Student Residence at Whitehead, Ma On Shan and then BBQ together at Whitehead Barbecue. Firstly, I met two mentees Mr. DENG Ruiqi and Mr. ZHANG Zhihan.  I gave my book named “Extenics: The Logic of Innovation” to my students. Then we took a photo together at the entrance of the student residence.

This student residence was named “Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village” on 6 Dec 2024 that appreciated Lee Shau Kee Foundation’s support to CityU. Lee Shau Kee was the founder of Hong Kong property giant Henderson Land Development. He died in March 2025 at age 97. We all remembered his contribution to CityU.

Top view of the student residence, which is divided into three buildings, one is for undergraduate, the second is for postgraduate, and the third is the mixed residence.

Inside the residence area, we took a photo with Prof. Daniel Ho.

We were divided into four groups, led by volunteers. Many international students live here and participate in volunteer work.

A new sport complex was in there.

Then we visited the fitness room.

After that we visited the undergraduate residence.

Multipurpose rooms and shared kitchen were visited.

And then the student representative led us to visit his room.

This is a twin room.

Finally, we took a group photo for memory.

The second event was Whitehead Barbecue.

I took pictures of our happy time.

Then we found that Prof. Alex Wong arrived here by canoe.

Lastly, I took a photo with Prof. Wong and all participants.

I took a photo with Prof. Wong and Prof. Ho before I left.
