Dinner with Yau Sir (Former Principal, YLMASS)

Tonight, my classmates and I to have dinner with Mr. Yau Chi Leung (丘志良) who is the former principal ofYuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School (YLMASS)” (元朗商會中學). This dinner is to celebrate his retirement. We are graduated in 1988 and took a photo for memory. 


Lastly, I give my book named “Logic of Innovation” as a gift to Yau Sir. Afterward, he found that Dr. Aaron Tong who wrote preface to me is his senior classmate in HKU. The world is very small!

HKSQ Technical Visit to HKUST (Guangzhou)

HKSQ organized a technical visit to HKUST (Guangzhou) on 21st Jul 2023. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) indeed is the realization of this ambition to transform education for the future, with its cross-disciplinary academic structure designed to complement the well-established disciplinary foundation at the Clear Water Bay campus. The University signed a tripartite agreement with the Guangzhou Municipal Government and Guangzhou University in 2018. Prof. Fugee Tsung (Acting Dean of Information Hub) is HKSQ exco member for long time and arranged this visit to us. We took a group photo in front of the HKUST(GZ) landmark.

Our members saw swans and took photos for memory.


Then Prof. Tsung's student led us to visit the campus. The first location is Intelligent Control Centre. All campus information consolidated together for monitoring.


We took a group photo in front of the large control panel.


Then we visited Computational Media and Arts Laboratory (CMA Lab). 


CMA comprises both art and technology, focusing on art creation and visual communication with advanced emerging technologies that across disciplines like art with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), AI-generated art, information art and design, and data visualization.


The student told us this image appear 3D image in your photo.


Then we went into the stage to feel the effect.


One of simulations is traveling inside human body.


We then visited the silent room.


We also visited the room like “interrogation room” that people in one room cannot see us in control room. 


Then Ben and I try to go to the interrogation room.


After that we visited the library. I took a photo in the middle of the corridor.


Three beautiful ladies took a photo in that corridor.


Inside the library, Vincent tried the ergonomic chair.


When we left the library, we met another time of students visit the university. It is summer holiday! I took to members that it is like sales pipeline. Secondary school students are potential candidates of HKUST(GZ) in future.


And then we saw drone demonstration.


Robotic dog was demonstrated and very smart. 


Finally, we visited the President floor to view the whole campus.


We took a group photo in front of the University brand.


Lastly, we went back to the lecture room and discussed with Prof. Fugee Tsung.


Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) appreciated Prof. Fugee Tsung arrangement. 


She represented HKSQ to present flag and 35th anniversary book to Fugee.


Then I introduced the STEM Mark under Q Mark Council, FHKI to Fugee.


After that Fugee introduced HKUST 2.0 Information Hub to us and how to facilitate the cross-discipline approach from different colleges and different hubs. 


He also introduced Triple-i institute named Industrial Informatics and Intelligence Institute that would like to connect more with industry partners.


Triple-i inclused four areas and they are Industrial Big Data, IoT, Carbon Neutrality and Intelligence.


The leader teams of Triple-i are introduced.


At the end, we exchanged ideas with HKSQ members both of us from different industries.


We are appreciated Mr. Thomas Tsang drove us to Shenzhen Bay Port back to Hong Kong. It is a very good trip to HKUST(GZ).

Visit Aunt family and stay in HKUST (GZ)

Since I will visit HKUST (Guangzhou) on 21 July, I went to my aunt home a day before and stayed in HKUST (GZ) apartment. Once I arrange the South China Normal University, I had rental electrical bicycle to go to my aunt home. 


Then we had a lunch.


After that my aunt told me a story of this Parrot. In a cold and raining day, this parrot flied near the window and then went inside the room. So that it became a member of aunt’s family.


Then my cousin and I went to the HKUST (GZ) campus through Guangzhou Metro. There are many people in 4:00pm because of summer holiday.


Finally, we arrived the university and RA Ms. Chen Ziwei led me into the apartment.


The apartment is very good with kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, the terrace and washing machine, etc.


Then we walked around the campus.


Took a photo with HKUST (GZ) landmark.


We saw swans (天鵝), ducks and many koi carp (錦鯉).


Lastly, we had dinner in the university restaurant.


When my cousin took a Metro, I returned to the campus and took a night view of the landmark. Very beautiful.


Students also had might market.


Different foods, snacks and drinks.


In next day, I return to mother home at 7:00pm and had dinner together.

Hong Kong Book Fair Seminar - SUNNY CHAI’s New Book “Managing Balance”

I was honor to attend Dr. Sunny Chai (CityU EngD Cohort) seminar for his new book named “Managing Balance” and published by CityU Press and the seminar was held on 19th July 2023 in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). When I arrived the venue, we took a photo for memory. 


I also met Dr. YC Chau and took a photo before the seminar.


Dr. Szeto Wing-hong is another CityU EngD cohort is also there.


In the beginning, CityU Press video was played and Mr. Lester G. Huang introduced CityU development.


Prof. Christine Huang (Director, CityU Press) introduced four new series planned to be published under CityU Press. 


Mr. Man Cheuk Fei (Moderator) introduced Dr. Sunny Chai and he read through his book and briefed the summary of Sunny’s life story including balance of selection of study, study aboard, then back to family factory, as well as, balance between business and ideal.


Dr. Sunny Chai firstly briefed CityU Press invited him for interview in April and requested to write a new book in July 2023. He took this challenge and shared his experience to young generation. Then he committed to donate all income from the book to CityU. 

Sunny said what he saw as a child mostly at the factory and then he like computer and studied in summer holiday in F.1. After that he study in USA for Business and Administration per his father expectation. He learnt in study aboard are independent and balance.

After that he returned to family factory. He said most factory second generation met the difficult for transformation. He was lucky transferred from lighting devices to electronic scale. In 1994, his consumer scale is the number one in the world. Then he transferred again from OEM to OBM. He said vertical transformation is extended to different industry to use scale/balance and horizontal transformation is customer (e.g. buy brands).

Finally, Mr. Man Cheuk Fei (Moderator) summarized Dr. Sunny life philosophy in three elements and they are Timing, Situation and Location (Book page 88).


During Q&A, we asked why Sunny selected EngD, what is your view on Hong Kong industry development, how to encourage young student to study engineering, etc.


After the seminar, I took a photo with Mr. Man Cheuk Fei who is a distinguished journalist, and Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of the Master Insight Media Limited. He is also the moderator in Prof. Way Kuo new book sharing seminar.
