The
CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society in the Department of Systems
Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) was organized AGM seminar
entitled “Education and Innovation” on 10th Jun 2017. It is a great
honor to have four cohorts as speaker of the seminar. The aim of the seminar is to dissemination
more information about the innovation and education opportunities and to
discover the creative initiatives from alumni of CityU EngD. Before the
seminar, we took a group photo for memory.

Dr. Samuel
Fung and Dr. Albert Tam)
In
the beginning, Dr. Joseph Leung gave welcome speech. He briefed the Design program separated into
Product, Feature and Architecture. They
would focus on Engineering plus IT into design, especially on multi-media design. That why Joseph changed his job nature from
IT into Academic. He also said the
coming focus would be on AR and VR simulation training and teaching.
Dr.
Walter Fung (Teaching Fellow, Dept. of Computing, PolyU) was the first speaker
and his topic was “The use of game and simulation for Information Systems Audit
& Control teaching and training”.
Firstly, he explained his background and his idea on education.
Then
Walter pointed out several off-the-shelf games and simulations for
teaching. He tried different games by
Harvard, MIT, Flexsim, etc. In the past,
ISAC related to security used to be assessed by traditional methods like exam,
case study, audit and evaluation of companies by report, etc. So he employed such game into Information
System Audit & Control (ISAC) for student project as motivation.
The
game links showed into the following diagram.
After
that Walter showed us most of his student teams selected for new design
approach on game and animation.
The
exhibition was held on 14 Apr 2016 and very successful results obtained. Finally, he concluded that simulation and
game design as well as animation allowed student to be more innovative and
creative. The exhibition could connect
students with industry. Finally,
selected student team participated in an international game competition. Walter
said they would evaluate the validity of such assessment approach through
teaching, research and publications.
I
was the second speaker and my topic named “Introduction to the Extenics”. It was the first time to present my results
after attended the formal training by International Academy of Extenics in last
few months.
Firstly,
I introduced the father of the Extenics - Prof. Cai Wen and his theory
background. I reviewed the Extenics
activities in Hong Kong since 2016 and the future planning of different
promotion activities on the Extenics in 2017. Moreover, I wrote five articles
in am730 and the column named “可拓品質量”.
Then
I briefed the Basic-element Theory, Extension Set Theory and Extension
Logic. Basic-element (基元) included three key elements (三要素) and they were Object,
Characteristic and Value. Moreover,
Basic-element constituted by Matter-element (物元) , Affair-element (事元) and Relation-element (關係元). Extensible Analysis, Conjugate
Analysis and Extension Transformation were also discussed. I used some examples which were my exercises
during Level 1, 2 & 3 courses in Guangzhou last few months.
Finally,
I introduced the contact of Extenics Innovation Method Level 1, 2 & 3
courses content and concluded that the future Innovation Management System
would be integrated into Quality Management System. I proposed to integrated ISO 9001 Quality
Management System and CEN/TS 16555 Innovation Management System series and got
the following Quality and Innovation Management System (QInnoMS) model. Lastly, TRIZ (RUSSIA), Innovation Culture
(USA) and Extenics (China) would be the key three approaches on innovation management.
I would like to integrate them into one approach in future.
The
third speakers were Mr. Calvin Sung (Co-founder & CEO) and Mr. Kingson Wan
(Co-founder & CTO) who were Walter’s students and they presented their
startup company to us. Their services named “Edutainment” and “Gamification”. Edutainment is to use game in educational use
and Gamification is to use game elements in solving daily problems.
Then
they showed some accomplishments to us.
For green deck project, it was VR technique (Game) plus promotion (Daily
Application). Finally, they briefed the
advantages of gamification & edutainment such as higher involvement and
attraction, as well as, more information and sustainable.
Dr.
T.W. Liu (Vice-President, CityU EngD Society) was the last speaker and his
presentation topic entitled “IP Strategies Using I Ching Theory”. Firstly, he briefed I Ching from Universality
to Static Composition (x3) and then to be indicated “Change”.
Then
he analyzed IP Strategy into 8 process and they were Time, Creativity,
Ownership, Wealth, Product, Industry, Market and Competition.
And
then TW Liu showed us how to use Patent Databases to search international
patents.
Finally,
he demonstrated the Circular Playing Board Game he developed for IP Strategy.
For instance, company like Mobike used strategy 8-3-5 to fright with competitor
and other company used strategy 1-4-7 to build barrier to entry. Last example was to overcome barrier to entry
using strategy 2-4-8 that was a Blue Ocean strategy to open up a new market
space.
After
the AGM Seminar, Dr. Herbert Yeung (President, CityU EngD Society) gave a
welcome speech and briefed our society activities in 2016/17. Then Dr. Rocky
Lam presented the financial report.
The
EngD Society executive members 2017 were:
President - Dr. Herbert Yeung (Cohort 2004)
Vice-President - Dr. TW Liu (2004)
Secretary
- Dr. Lotto Lai (2005)
Treasurer
- Dr. Rocky Lam (2006)
Advisor
– Dr. Peter Ho (2006)
Advisor
– Dr. Raymond Leung (2005)
Board
members:
Dr.
Danny Tang (2005)
Dr.
Ray Kong (2003)
Dr.
Albert Tam (2005)
Dr.
Amie Lai (2004)
Dr.
Joseph Leung (2001)
Finally,
some of us had a dinner in Chinese Restaurant and continued our sharing and
discussion.
