The International Academy for Quality (IAQ) General Meeting and Dinner

I was honor to participate the general meeting and dinner of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) on 15 May 2016 in Milwaukee, USA. The International Academy for Quality is an independent, self-supported, non-profit, non-governmental organization that is administered by a collegial assembly of Academicians who have been elected by their peers from the most respected, active and experienced protagonists of quality in the world. Individuals may not apply for Academy membership. The mission of the IAQ is to capitalize upon the leadership and abilities of its Academicians, both individually and in teams, to advance, worldwide, knowledge, understanding and use of the philosophy, theory and practice of activities involved in achieving quality for the benefit of mankind. I took a photo in front of the meeting venue.

Before the meeting, I met many friends and took some photos for memory.

In the beginning, Mr. Mehta Janak chaired the meeting and gave opening speech. Mehta briefed the IAQ Way and whole schedule of general meeting. The IAQ Way: Quality for Humanity – “By our mutual contributions IAQ advances quality throughout the world for the benefit of humanity, pursuing excellence through professionalism based on uncompromising fundamental value of respect for individual, integrity in thought and action and compassion for all living beings.”

I learnt the agenda and practice from Mehta that I was the first time to attend this meeting.

Then Mr. Glenn Mazur (Executive Director, QFD Institute) introduced the membership development. There are 131 IAQ Academicians in the world. After that Mr. Mazur reported the ITC Global Platform for Quality where ITC stands for International Trade Centre which headcounters at Geneva, Switzerland and is the development partner for trade and joint technical cooperation agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. ITC Global Platform for Quality signed MOU among EOQ, ASQ, IAQ and JUSE.

Ms. Liz Keim briefed the arrangement of the 50^th Anniversary of IAQ.

Report form IAQ Think Tanks (TT) and Committee:

Mr. Gregory Watson (Past President of IAQ) (Left 1) led the TT Design Improvement such as TC in Six Sigma, FMEA, etc.

Then Mr. Roland Jahnke mentioned the TT Education.

Dr. James Harrington reported TT Innovation and he promoted TRIZ.

Moreover, he published some new books named The Innovation Tools Handbook volume 1, 2 & 3.

Mr. Joal Teitelbaum presented the Task Force Clean Water to us. In 2015, they suggested going further and building the project: ASQ and IAQ Join Efforts to Save the Planet Water.

Then we took a group photo.

Before lunch, it was introductory presentation session by new IAQ members.

Ms. Michele Boulanger (Academician) was the first speaker and her topic named “Quality, Big Data, and International Standards”. Firstly, she introduced the standard of six sigma (ISO 18404). Then she briefed The Global State of Quality Research Report 2013 (APQC & ASQ). There were four key findings and they were “Quality Management”, “Outcomes and measures”, “Competence and training” and “Culture”.

After that Ms. Michele Boulanger briefed the 4Vs of Big data “Volume, Variety, Velocity and Variability” and pointed out the skill needed in Data Science. Lastly, we discussed how we prepare our quality managers to use Big Data to achieve gains in customer satisfaction and productivity ahead of competitors.

The second speaker was Mr. Willy Vandenbrande (Associate Academician) and his topic was “Quality: The System Game Changer”. Willy told us that he was convinced quality is the system game changer we need. Finally, Willy would like to focus on Sustainability / Social Responsibility and Education.

I (Associate Academician) was the third speaker and my topic entitled “ISO Journey in Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. Firstly, I introduced my family and my careers.

I quoted Steve Job statement about connecting the dots and use one slide to connect all my studies, careers, contribution in Society and Government.

Then I briefed the how history of certification and accreditation in Hong Kong Science Park included ISO 9001, ISO 14001k, ISO 27001, ISO 17025 and OHSAS 18001, as well as, ISO 50001. At the end, I mentioned the future concern was on Quality and Innovation Management System.

After my presentation, I received my associate academician certificate and pin.

After lunch, Mr. Shinichi Sasaki (Senior Advisor to the Board of Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan) was the fourth speaker and he introduced his improvement on TPS using JKK (Ji Koutei Kanketsu) that was Built In Quality with Ownership.

The fifth speaker was Nick Leifeld (VP, Corporate Compliance, Serigraph Inc.) and his presentation named “Using Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) to Design out Waste”. His approach was to use UV and Water Based Inks had significantly lower impact on the environment than Solvent Based Inks. They employed Lean principle to reduce 8 types of wastes. After implementation, they reduced VOC and Hazardous Waste. He introduced their sustainability philosophy which were Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Replace.

The last speaker was Dr. JoAnn Sternke (Superintendent, Pewaukee School District, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and her presentation title was “Leading for Innovation: It’s Not Just Light Bulb Moments & Cheerleading Only Get You So Far”. Firstly, Dr. JoAnn Sternke mentioned their mission was “Opening the door to each child’s future”. She said success innovation needed Leadership, Team and Motivation.

Then Dr. Sternke used the Baldrige criteria and simplified to be 5 steps named “People”, “Plans”, “Results”, “Process” and “Innovation”. Moreover, she used Baldrige definition of innovation that making meaningful change that created new value for stakeholders. After that she told us Innovation is not the result of chance. It is the result of strategic action and process. To create innovation culture, you always think “Innovation – I Can Do It!”

At the end, Dr. Sternke pointed out 4 strategies to lead for innovation included #1 Allow Freedom Within Fence; #2 Find New Perspective; #3 Embrace Dissonance and #4 Collaborate to Allow Ideas Collide.

Then we join the IAQ Dinner together and I always took some photos for memory.
