CityU Eminence Society
(CES) University Collaborative Project Work Group organized a seminar named “When
Trump loves in 5G and 6G” and then visit the State Key Laboratory of
Terahertz and Millimeter Waves. Before
the seminar, CES work group members took a photo with Dr. Wong Hang for memory.
(Left: I, Dr. Wong Hang, Mr. Weeky Wong and Dr. YC Chau)
In the beginning, Mr. Week
Wong (Chairman of CityU Eminence Society) gave welcome speech and he also
introduced CityU Eminence Society (CES) to all participants.
Dr. Wong Hang (Associate
Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, CityU) was our guest speaker
and he shared knowledge and development trend of 5G, as well as, 6G idea. His talk focused on Investment, Technology
and Leading Country.
Firstly, Dr. Wong briefed
the history of telecommunication from 1G to 5G.
1G used AM signal, 2G changed to digital and then 3G would use internet,
until 4G could use mobile for World Wide Web.
Then he introduced 5G
technology and advantages to us. It is the first attempt at microwave (4G:
~2GHz) and millimeter-wave (5G: <6GHz) spectrum. Millimeter-wave is faster than microwave one
order of magnitude (x10). He also explained
5G in terms of Data Rate, Latency, Mobility, Connection Density, Spectrum
Efficiency and Antenna Access.
And then Dr. Wong reviewed the milestone of mobile from 1G to 5G. He pointed out Siemens phone was disappeared because they selected technology to make phone as small size as possible but it was high energy consumption.
Nokia kept their size
because of their research on the relationship between phone size and radiated
power of antenna. After that all phone
size would not small than their phone in 1999.
After that he described the global 5G market and predicated it to grow
exponentially by 2025. There would be
five domain markets and they were “5G
Chipset”, “5G Equipment and Tester”, “5G Base Station”, “5G Data” and “5G
Applications and Service”.
Dr. Wong quoted news that “Donald
Trump says he wants the US to lead in 5G and even 6G wireless technology. Then he reviewed top brands of companies for
5G preparation in four market segments and they were Infrastructure, Service,
Mobile and Chipset. He said USA only
service was lag behind but still leading in the infrastructure.
Finally, he discussed 5G on
vehicle and showed the importance of 5G in the auto industry for self-driving.
One of video was showed “Pioneering
use of glass-mounted antenna for 5G connected vehicles” and it was amazing! For autonomous driver, there are separated
into 5 levels below.
Level 1: Driver Assistance
Level 2: Partly Automated
Driving (recent technology)
Level 3: Highly Automated
Driving
Level 4: Fully Automated
Driving (5G/6G network)
Level 5: Full Automation
(No driver)
Lastly, Dr. Wong said 5G is
coming in 2020 and next generation would be in 2030. 6G is
three-dimensional communication using Satellite and named “Internet over
Satellite (IoS)”.
Q&A:
For Smart City, Dr. Wong said it was just in the beginning and HK could
chase the behind easily in terms of technology. Then we discussed some business
opportunities on 5G. Dr. Wong said
investment in infrastructure and chip would be high return. On the other hand, mobile is terminal device which
is not the most return on investment in terms of 5G. IoS was the old concept which happened in
Motorola long time ago. Dr. Wong said
technology readiness did not mean market readiness.
Then Mr. Weeky Wong
represented CES to present souvenirs to Dr. Wong Hang and Prof. Chan
Chi-hou.
After that we visited the
State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves.
I took a photo with Prof. Chan Chi-hou for memory.
Firstly, Prof. Chan briefed
different researches in the State Key
Laboratory to us.
We had visited the shield
room for mobile antenna testing.
Then he introduced equipment
named Real-time Terahertz Spectrometer that could employed to detect
contaminants in foods and drugs.
The special antenna used distill
water was demonstrated.
Prof. Chan introduced many
international recognition / awards and achievements to the professors and
students in this laboratory.
At the end, we took a group photo for memory.
We had a very good Saturday morning for learning of 5G and Antenna research in CityU.
