Exploration of Life and Death - Sharing of Life Wisdom (易學及道化講座: 生與死的探索-生命智慧的分享)

 Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) I Ching and Dao Seminar named “Life and Death - Sharing of Life Wisdom” (學及道化講座: 與死的探索-生命智慧的分享) was held on 12^th Jun 2025 in Hong Kong Central Library. I would like to summarize the content below.

I Ching & Study of Knowing People classmates were attended this seminar and we took a photo with Prof. Pang in the entry before the seminar. 

Kinsen arrived early and took a front-row center seat to record the seminar. 

And then Minda and I took a photo with Mr. Andy Law and Ms. Ann Tsang (Mrs. Law) .

In the beginning, Vice Chairmen of Hong Kong Taoist Association (香港道教聯合會)  presented appreciation certificate to Prof. Pang. Prof. Pang is advisor of that association.

Almost full house of participants attended the seminar.

During the break, classmates took a group photo with Prof. Pang for memory.

Firstly, Prof. Pang introduced our ignorance of life and the universe. Big question is “Who am I?” Once we are born, we experience the world through our five senses. And he said “the evolution of all things comes from Yin and Yang (陰陽).”

He then shared a book he read when he was 17 that inspired his understanding of existentialism.

What is life? Prof. Pang employed Buddhism ideas to interpret it as fate (缘). He introduced different factors that determined success or failure.

After that he shared his ideal living environment. 

As well as his ideal model of talent.

You will only value something when you lose it.

Prof. Peng shared his understanding of the spirit tablet (靈位), which is used to commemorate parents.

He also explained "Wisdom" that refers to the deep understanding of things that produces a kind of decision-making power. 

The second part he shared was “aging”. He said “There are fewer and fewer people around you. You will pay less and less attention to society. There are many scammers along the way. After 60, you need to see through life.”

The third part is "Disease". Prevention is better than cure! He then introduced three different medical systems: Western medicine, Chinese medicine, and Taoist medicine.

The three different medical systems were discussed. Western medicine is good at "treating symptoms"; Chinese medicine is good at "regulating the root cause"; and Taoist medicine pursues "transcendence". The choice of medicine depends on the nature of the disease and personal beliefs.

The last part is “Dead” that integrating life and death into social ethics.

Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism (儒家、道家、佛教) had different perspectives on death. These three systems of thought have their own merits, and their attitudes toward death reflect their core values ​​and understanding of the universe.

Finally, he focused on Taoism view on Life and Death.

Lastly, Prof. Pang introduced the key to “Six Wisdom Management (六慧管理)”.

He also mentioned recently course named Chinese Traditional Wisdom for the Study of Knowing People (中華智慧知人學) at the end.
