Chinese Traditional Wisdom for the Study of Knowing People (中華智慧知人學)–Lecture 3

Minda and I attended Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) course named “Chinese Traditional Wisdom for the Study of Knowing People” (中華智慧知人學). Lecture 3 entitled “The first evil book in the history: Luozhijing (千古第⼀邪書：羅織經)” was held on 10^th May 2025 

Our HKSQ friend Mr. Ben Tsang also joined us to learn how to think like a bad guy.

We also took a photo with our teacher Prof. Pang for memory.

Prof. Pang firstly introduced the Luozhijing (羅織經).

There has 12 volumes included Reviewing People (閱人), Boss Management (事上), Governing Subordinates, Controlling Power (控權), Conquering Enemies (制敵), Securing Honor (固榮), Protecting Oneself (保身), Detecting Evil (察奸), Planning (謀劃), Questioning Crimes (問罪), Punishment (刑罰) and Cumbrance (瓜蔓). 

Prof. Pang selected some topics for discussion and explanation. The first one volume is Boss Management that Boss is always right.

Then discussed governing subordinates and understood the mind of subordinates.

He also said how to detect evil. Without wisdom, one cannot commit evil, and his wisdom is hidden. Those whom the ruler employs, even a traitor may become loyal; those whom the ruler abandons, even a loyal person may become traitor. (上所用者，奸亦爲忠；上所棄者，忠亦爲奸。)

The Cumbrance (瓜蔓) told us that if the matter is not big, it will not shock people. If the case involves many people, the achievement will not be obvious.

Prof. Pang then showed us his old book, but the book is no longer published.

After the break, Prof. Pang introduced “Fragments of the Political Scheme (權謀殘卷)” by Zhang Juzheng (張居正). There has 13 volumes and opposite to the Luozhijing (羅織經).

For instance, how to use people was discussed. The first principle is to distinguish good from evil, and clearly know rewards and punishments.

Finally, he compared Gentlemen and Villains (君子與小人). 

The table stated how to how to build harmonious relationships.

Lastly, Prof. Pang discussed some real cases when villains appeared in company.

After the lecture, we had lunch with Prof. Pang together in the restaurant near Xiqu Centre (戲曲中心).
