COMP 50th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming Dinner

I was honor to attend the COMP 50th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming Dinner on 31^st May 2024. The dinner was held in the U.Green, 5/F Communal Building, PolyU. 

I met Dr Vincent Ma (CEO of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP)) that I joined the opening celebration of HSITP office in HKSTP in 2018. 

I also met Dr. Louis C.K. MA (Director, SCOPE, CityU). He is the first cohort in COMP!

I took a photo with my colleagues and alumni before dinner. I recognized two alumni in my side and the first one is Mr. Frank Yao (姚鍾毓) who is studying PhD in CityU and the second one is Mr. Jacky Chang (Assistant Manager – Technology Delivery, New World Corporate Services Ltd.). 

In the beginning, Dr Miranda Lou (Executive Vice President) gave opening speech.

Then Prof. LI Qing (Dept. Head) gave welcome speech.

The first guest speaker was Dr Vincent Ma (CEO, HSITP) and his alumni talk named “A Game Changing Era”.

Firstly, Dr. Ma briefed the directions from National Development Strategy including China to be Innovative Nation and Technologically Advanced Country, establishing an international I&T center and form major platforms of cooperation in the GBA, as well as, achieving new innovative productive force.

Then Dr. Ma mentioned the strategic objectives for I&T in Hong Kong including i) build I&T ecosystem & promote new industrialization; ii) enlarge I&T talent pool; iii) promote digital economy & develop HK into a smart city; and iv) proactively contribute to the National I&T Development acting as a super-connector. And then he briefed the land resources for I&T are progressively increasing.

After that he introduced the Hetao ShenZhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone that is One Zone with Two Parks. HSITP vision and missions are stated as follows:

Vision

-          Be the world’s knowledge hub and I&T centre

-          Assemble the best talent congregate

Missions

-          The Park aims to proactively accelerate cutting edge innovation and technology (I&T) in the market for the benefit of the people.

Finally, he briefed the project development from phase 1 to phase 2. In phase 1, 8 buildings to be built and the first 3 buildings expected to be completed from 2024 onwards. Totally, 1 million sqm is in phase 1. It supports 6 pillar industries included Life & Health Technology, AI & Data Science, New Energy, New Materials, Microelectronics, and Robotics. 

Lastly, Dr. Vincent Ma concluded the HSITP’s mission to become an international I&T hub.

Launch of COMP 50th Anniversary Song by Dr. Henry Chan.

The second special dinner talk by Ms Tiffany Chan (Founder, iCare Foundation) named “香港，是一股勢不可擋的社區融合力量！” She shared her experience after the stroke that she overcome the health issue and can speaking normally. Then she established the NGO to help SEN people (SEN stand for Special Education Need) using IT.

At the end, special dinner performance by Bit 徒.

Breakfast & Lunch with Dr. Vincent Fung and Dr. Howard Cheung in PolyU

 This morning, I met Dr. Vincent Fung (PolyU) and Dr. Howard Cheung (HKU) in PolyU and then we had breakfast together. They then would meet Dr. Carman Lee in ISE Dept.

After I finished my morning duties, I found Dr. Vincent Fung in ISE Dept., and then we had lunch together in a new restaurant in PolyU. We planned to travel GBA using new arrangement of High Speed Rail. Dr. Fung will service in the Integrated Graduate Development Scheme (IGDS) soon.

Celebration for the Retirement of Dr. Leong Hong Va

I joined the celebration for Dr. HV Leong retirement lunch organized by COMP dept. PolyU on 30^th May 2024. Dr. Leong is one of interviewer for me last year and I appreciated him for giving me opportunity to service the Department of Computing. Dr. Leong gave appreciation speech to department. 

Then he invited his old friends and colleagues to took a photo for memory.

After that Dr. Henry Chan led alumni to sing a department song which created by alumni for coming 50^th anniversary.

The food is good and one of special song named “Kung Fu Soup (功夫湯)”.

Lastly, Dr. Jeff TANG and I took a photo with Dr. HV Leong, respectively.

EngD Industry meeting in PolyU

I invited Dr. YC Chau and Dr. Jeff Tang to meet Dr. Szeto for discussing the topic related to Industry 4.0 and AI. All of us graduated in CityU including BEng, EngD and PhD.

Before the meeting completed, Dr. Vincent Fung (PolyU EngD) joined us.

And then we had lunch together in the Chinese restaurant in PolyU.

The lunch set is very good especial for the Pickled Fish (酸菜魚).

We wise Dr. Szeto every success for his project.

Dinner for Prof. Lawrence Wu's retirement by EPA Centre friends

Prof. Lawrence Wu will be retired in Jun 2024 and EPA Centre friends arranged a dinner for celebration his retirement on 24^th May 2024. Prof. Wu was Brenda and my final year project supervisor. I met him in the entry of restaurant.

During the dinner, I selfie a group photo for memory. Prof. Wu would go to UK for retirement life.

My second retreat in COMP Dept., PolyU 2024

It is my second time to join the departmental retreat event from 21 to 22 May 2024. The retreat was held in the Song Shan Lake (松山湖) Hyatt Hotel for discussing teaching, research and academic activities in the first day.

After that we had dinner in the hotel. 

Dr. Henry demonstrated the 50^th anniversary theme song named “Hand in Hand” which was created by alumni.

We can see the lake.

In the next day, we visited Huawei European Town for signing MoU ceremony.

Dr. Walter Fung and I took a photo inside the hall for memory.

Our department head signed a MoU for future cooperation with Huawei.

Then we visited the town and riding a small train.

Mr. Vigor Fung (Sales Director) is one of representatives from Hong Kong office (middle one) to lead us for this trip.

In the train station, difference styles of building in different zones are showed.

Finally, we arrived Zone J for lunch.

Dr. Jeff Tang, Dr. Walter Fung, Dr. Richard Lui and I enjoyed a very good lunch buffet in Huawei European Town.

Huawei recognizes that it is difficult to predict when and where it will encounter black swans in its development process. However, Huawei can do its best to deploy talents in the habitat of black swans and capture the technological jumps that black swans may bring. So this black swan doll also named “Struggle Goose” (奮鬥鵝).

IAQ General Meeting in San Diego, USA 2024

The IAQ General Meeting was held on 15^th & 16^th May 2024 in San Diego, USA. I had joined the second day online. I captured a group photo for memory. 

In the beginning, Acn. Lars Sörqvist (President, IAQ) gave opening speech and introduced the agenda.

Then Lars introduced the IAQ Doctoral Academy which aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice of QM through world class research projects by PhD students on the global platform. He on behalf of Ram for briefing the new member process in the Membership Transition Process Manual such as from associate to academician. 

After that Grace Branna presented the Publication Committee Report.

And also discussed the IAQ Book Series.

Catherine Chan then presented Communication Committee Report and committee approach. Catherine had captured some photos for sharing below.

Since I had meeting on the morning that I left early.
