HKIE Webinar – SMART Transformation – Road to Industry 4.0

The HKIE webinar named “SMART Transformation – Road to Industry 4.0” was co-organized by MIS division on 12^th Dec 2020. The seminar aimed to share industry transformation to industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, as well as, how to bringing startups from zero to one into market launch product.

 

Before the seminar, HKIE MIS division representative presented a souvenir to Dr. Vincent Fung (Executive Director, Kin Yat Holding Ltd).

In the beginning, Dr. Vincent Fung reviewed his previous HKIE seminar named “How can a Traditional Manufacturer be sustained by SMART Evolution?” in 2015. He said company faced on labor shortage and wages increasing since 2010. Thus, they performed transformation from traditional production into smart manufacturing.

After five year, Dr. Vincent Fung would like to report their progress.  Firstly, he briefed company’s footprint from 1980 to 2020. 

And then he explained their product from traditional toys to smart devices journey.  In 2005, he identified as Industry 2.0 product-wise.  Now a day, they started Industry 4.0 Product-wise and expected extending to IoT ecosystem and 5G in 2025.

After that Dr. Fung explained End-to-End Horizontal Integrated Manufacturing Solution from design to New Product Introduction (NPI) to “High-Mix, Low-Volume” (HMLV) or “Low -Mix, High -Volume” (LMHV).  It included SMT floor transformation using automated production systems (e.g. Solder Paste Inspection, Automated Optical Inspection and In-Circuit Tester), Injection Workshop and Assembly Line, Product Lifecycle and In-process Testing Transformation.

Dr. Fung said those transformation from traditional to smart manufacturing both driven by customer and product nature.  It is because of technology advancement and market push, production floors needed to be upgraded into Smart Manufacturing Environment. One of successful cases is Jenga Game that was traditional toys for long time.  After fully automated production line with intelligent inspection system employed, this production still have competitive edge to produce in China. 

The second case was employed robots to replace the operator on functional test station to achieve process automation and data driven. 

The third case was data horizontal integration that all SMT machines’ production status and related data were connected together that the whole product lines information is visualized real time.  Therefore, management could make decision without latency.

Finally, Dr. Vincent Fung reported their performance through Industry 4.0 Maturity Assessment by HKPC in 2018.  Overall, they achieved 0i indicating that starting industry 4.0.  (Remark: It is frame condition that organizational and infrastructural enablers for implementation of industry 4.0 including i4.0 awareness, IT-infrastructure & data security, lean processes and advanced tools employed.  Seldom traditional manufacturers are achieved 0i and most of them are -1i or -2i.)

Lastly, Dr. Vincent Fung concluded that smart manufacturing is leading to the transformation in product, manufacturing and academic.  They are going to the step 4.
