HKSQxEngDS Webinar - Survival Mode Quality: Quality & Innovation Tools, and ISO Standards for Survival in a Pandemic

 The Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and CityU EngD Society co-organized a webinar on “Survival Mode Quality: Quality & Innovation Tools, and ISO Standards for Survival in a Pandemic” on 30th April 2022. The webinar tried to combine different quality management and innovation tools (Lean & Extenics), as well as ISO standards (ISO 9001, ISO 22301 & ISO 22316) for achieving the survival mode of businesses.  I (Dr. Lotto Lai, Chairman of HKSQ) was the guest speaker for HKSQ and EngD Society on this topic.


Firstly, I briefed the impact under Covid-19 and the contents of this webinar including business model canvas, lean concept, extenics, ISO 9001 risk-base thinking, business continuity and organization resilient, as well as, survival mode quality model.


Using HKSQ as example, I shared our problems through Business Model during pandemic period such as no onsite activities including seminar, visit and workshop, etc.


The first quality tool selected for survival mode of business is lean concept.  After briefing the process of lean, 7 wastes (muda) were mentioned and the 8th waste was identified as unused employee creativity. 


And then Extenics and Extension Innovation Method were introduced for diamond thinking as so to create more new ideas to solve our problems.


Recently example is designated taxis (抗疫專用的士) that can be explained through extenics model for car rental.


After that ISO 9001 risks and opportunities (clause 6.1) was employed. We used HKSQ case to identified four risk and evaluated their level.  Opposition of those risks are our opportunity and we tried to propose different actions. 


Incident management under ISO 22301 (previously BS 25999) was discussed. This business continuity management is a specific application of the broader concept of resilience to ensure organization survival during disruptive incidents.


And then ISO 22316 organizational resilience was introduced that is holistic management system for enhancing organization capability to absorb and adapt in a changing environment to enable it to deliver its objectives and to survive and prosper. Organizational resilience states the structure approach including principles, attributes and activities.


Finally, we reviewed the business model canvas in Viability, Desirability and Feasibility of HKSQ.


For Viability, we considered the profit and loss account report to analyze our financial health of the organization.


For Desirability, we employed Kano Model to consider our customers’ needs.


For Feasibility, we also used extenics to create new methods to provide services under pandemic. One example we used are online teaching in university and different ideas through different combination as well as evaluation were demonstrated.


At the end, I purposed the Survival Mode Quality Model involved all topics we discussed today and hopefully it could give inspiration to all participants.
