CityU HK Tech 300 - 2nd Cohort Seed Fund Orientation

There are 47 teams are awarded with the CityU HK Tech 300 seed fund for the 2^nd Cohort.  An orientation was held on 6^th Jul 2021. 

Dr. YC Chau and I are mentors from CityU Eminence Society (CES) and joined the orientation. We took a photo in front of the banner outside the venue.

Dr. Gary Cheng (Former Chairman, CES) is mentor and his company supported HK Tech 300 for startup accountant service.

In the beginning, Prof. Michael Yang (Vice-President (Research & Technology)) gave a welcome speech to all strategy partners, winners and stakeholders.  He explained the aims of HK Tech 300 such as transferring the research to big impact in the society innovation.  Then he gave three advices to all winners.

i)                    Enjoy the journey of Entrepreneur

ii)                  Entrepreneur and Innovation is difficult and you need to put up time, resource and all your power on it.

iii)                Be ready for all kinds of failure and don’t afraid it.

Then Dr. Laura Lo (Asso. VP (CMAO)) introduced the program from Recruiting & Training, to Seeding, to Incubating and then Launching. And then she briefed the distribution of 47 winners in different areas including BioTech/Health, FinTech/Business, Deep Tech, ICT/AI and EduTech, etc.

After that Dr. Lo introduced her team members in different areas to us.

Finally, Dr. Lo briefed the duty of Project-in-charge (PIC) including comply with the requirement, use the fund efficiently and conduct project works.  The guideline for use of fund was described including i) Reasonable, ii) Essential items in the project, iii) No invoices/receipt to present but keep it, iv) No double payment with other fund, v) open and fair for procurement, vi) quotation/ tenders and vii) avoid conflict of interest. Monitoring and review mechanism is needed such as interim report (on or before 5^th month) and final report (on or before 12^th month), progress meetings and auditors’ report. 

Lastly, Dr. Lo added that co-working space would provide at Fon Yun-wah Building and the cheque presentation ceremony would be held in late July 2021.

Gary Cheng CPA Ltd is one of corporation and accounting service support firms and Ms. Ida Kong (Business Controller) presented their service to support HK Tech 300.

She introduced free service included company formation, company secretary and supporting bank account but not involved company registration fee to government.  Accounting resources based on XERO that provided 1 month free trail and free training, as well as 25% off monthly subscription discount. 

Then they would provide three training modules “Starting your business”, “Watch the finances” and “Surround with the right people”, as well as workshop named “The common challenges”.  Lastly, they would help us about audit on funding expenditure.

The representative of BOC provided “Total Solution designated for CityU HK Tech 300”. 

Firstly, he introduced the partnership between startup and bank in different stages.

After that he described their total solution in four areas and they were “Payment & Settlement”, “Financing”, “Service Discounts” and “Account Service”. Where iGTB included free ERP and it was enough for startup use.

Finally, he briefed special load and financing scheme, as well as, some special offers (e.g. discount on MPF management fee, payroll service, etc.) to HK Tech 300 startups.

Ir. Thomas Chan (Biotechnology & Health) is responsible to entrepreneurship platform from HK Tech 300 seeds fund to HKSTP and Cyberport.

Ms. Sara Wong (ICT & AI) is responsible to support from 4 major Chamber / Associations.

Ms. Carmen Ng took over activities in the entrepreneur ecosystem and encourage CityU teams to join different competitions. 

She also handled the mentorship scheme (including CES and CityU alumni, etc.) 

Dr. Trace Cheng (Deep Tech) concerned the IP provision and overview the evaluation licensing agreement (ELA).

HK Tech 300 has cross over with ASTRI to enable the Tech Startup in different initiatives with different technology groups.

Lastly, Ms. Fiona Hung (Fintech & Business) managed the HK Tech 300 website and demonstrated our winners company activities.
