CityU EngD Society AGM and Annual Dinner 2023

The CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society AGM and Annual was held on 30^th Nov 2023 at Faculty Lounge. In this year, I completed my leadership role – President 2022-2023 and invited Dr. Sunny Chai to give use a talk. The group photo was taken for memory.

Before the talk, we arrived venue early for setup.

Dr. Walter Fung brought two four wine (2x Australian & 2x USA) and two champaign, and I brought one Whiskey from Thailand and one Vodka from Vietnam.

Professors arrived and we took a photo for memory.

Dr. Sunny Chai (Chairman, HKSTP) was our guest speaker and his talk named “Future Development of Innovation and Technology in Hong Kong”. He said central government fully affirmed HKSTP’s continuous drive to forge I&T success over the past 20 years.

Then he reviewed 2023 Policy Address related topics to develop HK into an international I&T Hub. And then he briefed the background of HKSTP such as more than 1500 Tech companies from 24 countries and regions, more than 960 startups, 12 unicorns, etc.

After that Dr. Chai briefed three I&T advantages in Hong Kong including R&D (R), Innofacturing (I) and Financial Centre (F). He said HK is only one city have 5 universities ranked within 100 from QS.

Finally, he mentioned many collaborations between HKSTP and CityU especially CityU HK Tech 300.

Lastly, Dr. Sunny Chai foresighted the future development for science park Shenzhen branch so as to attract more enterprises and talents to cross the border.

Sunny said he studied in CityU for EngD program because of Dr. Sun and Rocky. And took a photo for memory.

Before he left early for his son birthday, we took a group photo for memory.

Since Dr. Rocky Lam (Our new President) needed to left early for a university talk, so he presented his vision for coming society committee. The topic named “Empowering”. He raised the mission of our society to empowering HK as smart solutions marketplace and the Society to be leading CityU alumni association helping HK solutions providers exploring the foreign markets.

Then he reviewed the latest IT technologies including cloud computing, IoT, Big data, AI, RPA, 5G and digital transformation. We focused on the wave of digital transformation. He also said we needed role models.

Finally, Dr. Rocky Lam proposed empowering through collaboration with different parties such as universities in both HK and mainland, startups, HKSTP, Cyberport, etc. We also needed to create more value for CityU, students and Alumni such as raise funding, physical & web-based platform from innovation to commercialization, and act as mentors for startups, etc. Lastly, he proposed Great Bay Site visits, OBOR/BRIC Countries Opportunities seminars, Commercialization seminars, and social activities such as Sailing led by Sunny!

Then the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was started and I briefed some history to different years cohorts and new EngD students. Our EngD (EM) programme started since 2001.

The CityU EngD Society had been established since 2005 after the residential workshop in 2004.

And then I briefed EngD Society activities in 2022 that included different seminar and forum, as well as technical visit.

We also supported CityU activities such as ARO event and new books publication.

Many of EngD cohorts shared their stories to ARO for sharing to alumni.

Finally, we adopted the new committee members and new advisor in the Society.

Advisor: Dr. Sunny Chai (Cohort 2007), Dr. Raymond Leung (Cohort 2005) and Dr. Augustine Chow (Cohort 2003)

Directors: Dr. Amie Lai (Cohort 2004), Dr. Albert Tam (Cohort 2005), Dr. Joseph Leung (Cohort 2003), Dr. T.W. Liu (Cohort 2004) and Dr. Samuel Fung (Cohort 2005)

The second part is video by our Vice Chairman – Dr. Ray Kong who interviewed to Prof. Dang Chuangyi and Prof. Liu Cheng about intelligent manufacturing.

Dr. Ray Kong proposed for the joined CityU Alliance Projects and to form Affiliated Research Center.

That center would be located in Guangdong Blitech Ltd. So that research project integrated among Industry, CityU and EngD.

Lastly, Dr. Herbert Yeung (Treasurer) reported the Society financial status.

Before end of dinner, Prof. Ron Kwok introduced ARO gift that is a seed indicating growth like CityU.

HKQAA International Symposium 2023 – Sustainable Finance, ESG and Climate Resilience • Hong Kong 2023

HKQAA International Symposium performed onsite and online with the theme entitled “Sustainable Finance, ESG and Climate Resilience • Hong Kong 2023” on 30^th Nov 2023 at the Exchange Square of HKEX. I attended online in CityU classroom because I had CityU EngD AGM event at that night. 

In the beginning, Ir C. S. Ho (Chairman of HKQAA) gave welcome speech and he introduced this international symposium guests and some background of ESG as well as certification service for green bond finance industry by HKQAA.

And then Mr Christopher Hui, GBS, JP (Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of HKSAR) gave guest speech. He said climate change is global challenge and he hoped this symposium to bring sustainable finance concept in Hong Kong and Great Bay Area. 

All guests are invited to take some group photos.

Mr Chen Guohuang (Deputy Director-general of the Department of Finance of Guangdong Province) was the first guest speaker and he briefed the green development in Guangdong Province and introduced green finance development such as green bond in GBA.

Ms Li Lei (Deputy Director-general of the Department of Finance of Hainan Province) was the second guest speaker and she introduced the Hainan Province RMB Offshore Bonds up to 5 billion RMB.

Ms Zhang Sufen (Deputy Director-general of Shenzhen Finance Bureau) was the third guest speaker and she said Shenzhen green bond, blue bond and sustainable bond issued and those had been certified by HKQAA.

The fourth guest speaker was Ms Winnie Fan (Managing Director of Sustainable Finance (Corporate Banking) of BOC(HK)) and she mentioned their carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, as well as, new energy focus.

The fifth guest speaker was Ms Annette L. Nazareth (Chair of the Integrity Counsel for the Voluntary Carbon Market) and she used video to give speech talking about carbon market. She said we needed to build a trust and perform benchmarking globally.

The sixth guest speaker was Ms Daphne Wat (Deputy Chief Executive/ Alternate Chief Executive, China Construction Bank (Asia) Corporation Limited) and she briefed their ESG financing and some new projects related to insurance of environmental risk.

The last speaker was Ms Taie Wang (Chief Sustainable & Emerging Business Officer, Hang Seng Indexes Company) and she firstly briefed the background of ESG that became increasingly important in investment strategy. ESG served an important propeller in revaluation.

After that she introduced the HSIL ESG index series development milestone. “HSIL/HKQAA Sustainability Ratings and Research for listed companies is available through the Sustainable and Green Exchange (STAGE)” she said.

Finally, Ms. Taie Wang briefed how to achieve corporate sustainability recognition through Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index series members.

Panel Discussion Session:

Dr Nigel Croft, Chair ISO Joint Technical Coordination Group for Management System Standards was the facilitator. He hadn’t visited Hong Kong for four years. He introduced a new standard ISO 32210 for sustainable finance.

The panelists were Mr Ng Wang Tsang, Andy, (Chairman of Hong Kong General Chamber of Social Enterprises); Mr Danny Yeung (Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Prenetics Limited); Mr Johnny Wei (Head of Wholesale Banking of OCBC Bank (Hong Kong) Limited); Mr Mac Leung (Director, Sustainable Finance, Standard Chartered Bank); Mr Tadahiro Kaneko (Senior Assistant to Unit Heads of Global Banking & Wholesale, Banking, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation).

Lastly, Dr Michael P. H. Lam (CEO, HKQAA) gave speech and said “"We believe their exemplary efforts will serve as a beacon, inspiring others in the industry to make significant contributions towards a more sustainable environment and society.” 

And then Hong Kong Green and Sustainable Finance Awards 2023 were presented to all awardees.

HKQF the 1st TIC-ITAC Promotion & Consultation Subcommittee Meeting 2023

The 1st Promotion and Consultation Subcommittee meeting of Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 28th Nov 2023.  Group photo was taken as follows.
