Webinar: Using the ISO 56002 Innovation Management System

Harrington Management Systems arranged the webinar entitled “Using the ISO 56002 Innovation Management System” on 23rd Feb 2022.  This webinar covers how to use Benraouane & Harrington’s new book to use the exciting new standard ISO 56002:2019 Innovation Management System to improve your innovation.

The speakers were Dr. Sid Ahmed Benraouane (Global Consulting Practice Lead) and Dr. H. James Harrington (CEO, Harrington Management Systems).  In the beginning, Dr. Benraouane introduced ISO Innovation Family including ISO 56000:2000, ISO 56002:2019, ISO 56003:2019, ISO 56004:2019, etc.

Then he introduced the new book content that follows the template of ISO 50002 which has the same high-level structure as ISO 9000 standard. In Section 1 – Introduction, it includes innovation principles including value realization, future-focused leaders, strategic direction, culture, exploiting insights, managing uncertainty, adaptability and system approach.

In Section 4 – Context of the organization, it is similar to ISO 9001 but we need to determining the scope of the innovation management system.  The book provided different tools and model such as foresight model and cultural change model for our application.  In Section 5 – Leadership, Innovation vision, strategy and policy were discussed.

After that Dr. Benraouane briefed four types of Innovation Strategy and they were “Incremental Innovation”, “Breakthrough Innovation”, “Disruptive Innovation” and “Transformational Innovation”. Typically, 70% of company focused on Incremental Innovation for improvement. Transformational Innovation is a long-term innovation.

In Section 6 – Planning, it focuses on how to plan the success innovation. Organization structure needs to be addressed.  Dr. Benraouane quoted Harringtone (2019) for Section 7 – Support that included People, Time, Knowledge and Funding.

In Section 8 – Operation, that included identify opportunities, create concepts, validate concepts, develop solutions and deploy solutions steps.  Then Section 9 – Performance Evaluation, it describes the Input-related indicators (e.g. no. of idea suggested, no. of ideas implemented, value creation potential, and impact the market), Throughput-related indicators (e.g. speed of experimentation, learning & development, time to profit, time to market, engagement level and brand awareness), and Output-related indicators (e.g. Patents and IP work, user satisfaction).

Finally, he introduced Strategic Innovation Portfolio through 8 activities.

Lastly, we had open discussion.  I met Dr. James Harrington in the ASQ World Conference for Quality and Improvement (WCQI) 2011 & 2016 and IAQ General Meeting 2016. And I also met one of participants Prof. Toru Nakagawa in the 6th International Conference on Systematic Innovation (ICSI 2015) in Hong Kong.
