CityU KTO – AUTM Virtual Course “Startup Business Development” – Class 4

 The 4-day AUTM virtual introductory course on Startup Business Development is organized by the Knowledge Transfer Office of City University of Hong Kong, HKSAR Intellectual Property Department and the Institute for Entrepreneurship of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  The class 4 was held on 17 Dec 2020. Beginning, Prof. Barbara Gunderson (Prof. Dev. Director) introduced the course and speakers. They were Mr. Paul J. Corson (Deputy Director and Sr. Director for Entrepreneurship at the University of Utah’s PIVOT Center) and Professor Keith Marmer (Chief Innovation & Economic Engagement Officer, University of Utah).


In the beginning, Prof. Keith Marmer introduced the definition of “Conflict of Interest”. And the he discussed the first poll results that most of participants (53%) thought faculty and researchers can play a role in startups and be a university employee as long as there are guideline.


Then he briefed the university policy on “Conflict of Interest (CoI)” including relevant laws, personal and institutional CoI.  He also reminded that CoI disclosure required such as annually, invention disclosure, company formation and license.


And then Prof. Marmer introduced Institutional CoI especially in Startup.  Many items should be considered such as startup funded research to the laboratory, consulting to the startup, personal equity, management of students, startup employees and operating out of the lab, etc.


Finally, he discussed IP Considerations such as who owned IP in different situations and Licensing Considerations such as scope of know-how licensing, payment for IP costs, etc.


Mr. Paul J. Corson presented the second topic named Startup Ecosystem.  For key element including Intellectual, Human, Financial and Physical were discussed.


Then he told us different characteristics that like to play instrument but actually it represented innovation ecosystems that 56% participants voted.


After that Mr. Corson discussed catalyst, champion, innovation agenda and policy platform that were key factors to bring all entrepreneurs together.  During the third poll, most of participants (63%) thought universities should play a beneficial role in supporting entrepreneurs and startups.


The last part was “Measuring Impact” that they compared the output and impact.  Prof. Marmer discussed the last poll and found that most people thought “recruit, retain and reward faculty” was not the goals of a startup.
