Remember Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文), the Father of Extenics (可拓學)

A very sad and sudden news received from Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) on last Saturday afternoon that Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) passed away on 5^th Nov 2021.  We, Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) expressed hearty condolences to Prof. Cai Wen’s family, friends and colleagues. I would like to consolidate our meeting and my Extenics learning journey from Prof. Cai Wen below.  The first photo is frequent used in my talk about Extenics.

My first meet with Prof. Cai Wen on 29^th Feb 2016 during the seminar entitled “Extenics: China original theory” which was organized by Hong Kong Chinese Institute of Engineers (香港中國工程師學會), Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE)–Manufacturing & Industrial Division (MIE), Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ), TQM and Shenzhen Intellectual Property Society (SZIPS).

I found the Extenics theory is very innovative and novel in the field of innovation. So that I decided to study “Extenics” with Prof. Cai Wen. When I told to my uncle in Guangzhou, my uncle told me that he was colleague with Prof. Cai Wen in the institution (The former Guangdong University of Technology) many years ago and then he phoned Prof. Cai Wen for connection.

After that I joined different event related to Extenics in China including the training program on “Patent Analysis and Corporate Development Series 2016” (專利分析導航企業發展) from 15 to 16 April 2016.

Prof. Cai Wen also led the meeting for establishing the Innovation Alliance of the Extenics for application and promotion on 7^th May 2016 and 5^th Jun 2016.

Dr. Aaron Tong and I met Prof. Cai Wen in Shenzhen on 22^nd May 2015 and we discussed for promoting the Extenics (可拓學) to Hong Kong.

I had invited Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) and Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) as keynote speakers with the topic named “China Original Science Subject–Extenics” (中國原創的學科可拓學) in the 1st World Summit for Chinese Quality (第一屆全球華人品質峰會) which was organized by Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) (全球華人品質聯盟(籌)).

The Post-World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) seminar on Extenics (可拓學) was organized by  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong on 9 July 2016. Prof. Cai Wen presentation topic named “Creative Thinking Revolution - Extensive Innovation Method” (創意的革命—可拓創新方法).

After half year studying through self-reading and attending different seminar, I attended the 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics  (全國第15屆可拓學年會) cum the 1st Extenics Level 1 examination in Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院).  Before the examining presentation, Prof. Cai Wen introduced the four core values of extenics that were “拓、嚴、謙、信” (Extension, Severe, Modest & Integrity). I recorded it for memory. Prof. Cai Wen said this four core values are success factors for Extenics sustainable development.

I was honor to be award as outstanding contribution on promoting Extenics and Extension Innovation Method Level 1 on 12^th Aug 2016. (可拓創新方法應用推廣優秀工作者及拓創新方法一級認證證書)

At the end of 2016, Prof. Cai Wen performed the first in-house training in the company “Baby First (智慧寶貝教育集團)” which invited by Mr. Victor Chiu and Ms. Hemans Leung (5^th Dec 2016). After the training, we had dinner together.

I attended the 1st Meeting of the Extenics Internationalization 2017 (第一屆可拓學國際化會議) was organized by Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, GDUT (廣東工業大學可拓學與創新方法研究所) from 4 to 5 Jan 2017; and visit Prof. Cai Wen office.

Then Dr. Aaron Tong invited Prof. Cai Wen and Hong Kong’s extenics promoters to attend HKETA Annual Dinner in Hong Kong Science Park on 17^th Jan 2017.

I had arranged the seminar named “Extenics–Education & Application” (「可拓學」- 教育及應用) which was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong and International Academy of Extenics (IAE) on 28 April 2016.  Prof. Cai Wen is our keynote speaker to promote Extenics.

Prof. Cai Wen had established an Extenics company (可拓學公司) (Full name: 广州可拓学信息科技有限公司) in Guangzhou in Feb 2017 and then he arranged three workshops for Extension Innovation Method Level 1 (from 24^th to 26^th Mar 2017), Level 2 (from 7^th to 9^th Apr 2017) and Level 3 (from 12^th to 14^th and 26^th to 28^th May 2017). I with my wife Minda to attend his workshops in Guangzhou.

The Extenics Seminar 2017 was arranged by Guangdong University of Technology and held from 1 to 3 July 2017. Hong Kong representatives also joined and took a photo with Prof. Cai Wen for memory.

Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) visited HKSTP on 11^th May 2018. I led him to visit my serviced laboratories and then had a dinner in Science Park.

After that Prof. CaiWen invited HK Extenics team to visit his new office which was located in the co-working space in Guangzhou named “World Union Space (世聯空間)” in IFC, Guangzhou on 18^th May 2018.

We met again in the 16th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) from 18 to 19 Aug 2018.

Extension Innovation Special Training Camp (可拓創新特訓營) was organized from 11^th to 12^th May 2019 in Guangzhou. Prof. Cai Wen gave a talk named “Progress in the Promotion of Extenics Research and Application” (可拓學研究與應用推廣進展).

On 1^st & 2^nd Jun 2019, I attended the Examination of the Extension Innovation Method Level 3 Certification (可拓創新方法三級水平認證) was organized by International Academy of Extenis (國際可拓學研究院) and Guangzhou Extenics Information Technology Co., Ltd. (廣州可拓學信息科技有限公司).  This examination separated into three parts: (1) Level 3 exercise paper prepared before the examination, (2) 3.5hr open book examination and (3) case presentation. I was the first person awarded Level 3 certificate by Prof. Cai Wen in Hong Kong.  It is the last time I meet Prof. Cai Wen face-to-face because of Covid-19 pandemic happened afterward.

After 2019, I only meet Prof. Cai Wen online in different Extenics events below.

Cloud Forum on Extenics 2020 is organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) and coorganized by Extenics Professional Committee of CAAI on 26th July 2020 through Tencent Meeting. (由中國人工智能學會主辦, 中國人工智能學可拓學專業委員會承辦的 “2020年可拓學雲論壇”, 于今年7月26日在“騰訊會議” 線上網絡平台上舉辦.)

Two-day Extension Innovation Method training course (可拓创新方法培训班) was held during the 17th Extenics Annual Meeting (全国第17 届可拓学年会) from 12th to 15th Aug 2021. In the beginning, Prof. Cai Wan（蔡文教授）gave the first lecture named “Development History of Extenics (可拓学发展历程)”.

In the beginning of the 17th Extenics Annual Meeting, Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文研究员) was the first speaker and his presentation entitled “Extension Intelligence (可拓智能)”.

We missed the father of Extenics.  Our mission is to develop and promote the Extenics continuously so as to contribute for Prof. Cai Wen’s teaching effort.
