Silk Road Series – Seminar on China-Ukraine Trade and More

Silk Road Economic Development Research Center (SREDRC) and One Belt One Road Research Institute (OBORRI) of Chu Hai College co-organized the seminar on China-Ukraine Trade and More on 29^th Sep 2018.  Ukraine as a major economy at the crossroad of Eurasia has every potential to recover its past glory. As last as in the Soviet era, it had been the main industrial and agricultural centre of the confederation.  In recent years, it has been a major source of technology transfer fro China and given its fertile back soil and its insistence against genetic modification.  China’s Belt and Road Initiative aims to resurrect millennium old Silk Road and Ukraine could very well be once again the hub connecting the East from China, Central Asia and Caucasus, the West of Eastern, Central and Western Europe, the north of Russia and the Baltic Sea and the south through the Black Sea to the Middle East.  In the beginning, Dr CHAN Man Hung, Thomas (Director, One Belt One Road Research Institute) gave welcome speech and introduced each speaker.

Mr. Joseph Chan (Chairman of the Silk Road Economic Development Research Center) gave opening address.  

Mr. Olekandr Romanovskyy (Director, Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine) was the first speaker and his topic entitled “Ukraine on the World Agrarian Map: Export, Import, Prospects of Cooperation between Ukraine & China”.  Firstly, Mr. Romanovskyy shared the role of Agribusiness in Ukraine that had 18% of GDP.

Ukraine is farmers paradise in which had largest-arable land bank in Europe and No. 10 globally.  Their production of cereals and legumes were introduced. 

The export and import products trade between Ukraine and China were mentioned.  In 2017, Ukraine exported about $1016M to China and only imported $125M from China.

The second speaker was Prof. Igor Golubii (Vice-Director, Scientific and Pedagogical Activities, International Relations, Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) and his presentation named “Trade between China and Ukraine”.  Prof. Golubii said China recognized the independence of Ukraine on 27 Dec 1991 and Ukraine opened the Embassy of Ukraine in the People’s Republic of China in March 1993.  

Over the past decade, China and Ukraine had regularly and in good faith demonstrated their readiness to expand cooperation with each other in various fields.  Then he showed us the top 10 Ukrainian exports to China.

He also showed top 10 China exports to Ukraine.  It observed the no. 1 was electronic equipment.

Prof. Iogr Golubii said Ukraine (unlike Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan or Azerbaijan) was still not an active member of the “Silk Road of the 21^st Century” inititative.  Then he explained why China should be interested in Ukraine because of geographic location and potential hub to EU, as well as Ukraine’s agricultural industry.  During Q&A, Mr. Jimmy Kwok (Chairman, FHKI) asked question about his suggestions to improve the structure of trade.  

The last speaker was Prof. Oleksandr Pidchosa (Assoicate Professor, Department of International Finance, Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) and his presentation topic was “Economic and Investment Cooperation between Ukraine and Hong Kong”. 

Firstly, Prof. Pidchose analyzed the Hong Kong’s import & re-export structure and Ukraine export structure.  He got the following complementary map for trade cooperation.

The trade amount between Ukraine and Hong Kong from 2015 to 2017 were described.

Finally, Prof. Pidchose also demonstrated the SWOT analysis of trade cooperation between Ukraine and Hong Kong.
