HKSQ & HKQAA Promotion Seminar on Feasibility Study on the Quality Start-up Development

HKSQ & HKQAA arranged the promotion seminar for the Trade and Industry Department (TID) Funded project named “Feasibility Study on the Quality of Hong Kong Start-up Development for Supporting the Sustainable Business Growth” on 8th July 2020 in Cyberport.  Group photo was taken in the beginning.

I met two CityU junior classmates Ms. Tracy Lai (Project Coordinator-Global, ESG Matters Limited) (Who graduated in BCH, CityU) and Ms. May Lit (Senior ESG Coordinator, ESG Matters Limited) (Who graduated in Env Policy, CityU)


Before the seminar, I took a photo first.


Then we chatted in the meeting room.


Ms. Brenda Ling (HKQAA) was MC today.


I (Chairman, HKSQ) was the first speaker to give welcoming address and introduced the original concept of this research project to startup.  The seat arrangement in the room considered the social distance under COVID-19 pandemic.  


Firstly, I introduced the background of Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) that we have established since 1986.  Our mission is aligned with this research project to enhance the startup quality management and sustainable development.


Then I briefed the past success cases that I assisted startups to achieve accreditation and certification when I served in Science Park.  So that I knew the problem startup faced when they growth and ready to go to market.  That’s why I proposed to HKSQ to apply TID SME funding for enhancing startup quality management.


The second speaker was Mr. Adams Wong (Senior Business Manager, HKQAA) and he briefed the details of the project which we proposed to TID.


Mr. Adams Wong mentioned the process how we achieved the SME Development Fund (SDF). Now it renamed to Trade and Industrial Organization Support Fund (TSF).


Then Adams briefed the six key activities in the project and they are “Promotion Seminar”, “Startup Research Survey”, “Practical Guidebook for Startup”, “Sharing Seminars”, “10 Workshops” and “Dissemination”.


At the end, Adams presented the expected project timeline from Jul 2020 to May 2021.


Ir. Antony Chan (Senior Manager – Stakeholder Development, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, Cyberport) was the third speaker and he introduced Cyberport – The Digital Tech Hub of Hong Kong.


Antony briefed Cyberport achievement included 792 on-site incubatees and they had 4 out of 7 unicorns in Hong Kong.


Then he explained three key strategic focus in Cyberport and they are “Cultivate & Develop Talents”, “Drive Industry Development” and “Integrate New & Traditional Economies”.  


Finally, Antony briefed Cyberport and HKSTP cluster development and they are sister companies under HKSAR government and complementary to each other. 


After break, Mr. Patrick Fan (CEO, beNovelty Limited) was the fourth speaker and he shared his experience on running startup with quality initiative.  Patrick briefed beNovelty is B2B API start-up founded in 2015.


Patrick’s concept was to standardize API into one platform named “OpenAPIHub”. Thus different function could establish different APIs and they could integrate each other easily like LEGO blocks. 


Then he revisited quality that included four key factors.  They were “Security & Data Protection”, “Branding & Customer Care”, “Stability & Business Continuity” and “Confident & Team Performance”.  He mentioned quality is critical in B2B Startup from Consultancy & Advisory to Projects, especial in the stage of Subscriptions & Licensing and then to Strategic Partnership.


Lastly, Patrick gave four tips and tricks to all startup below:
i)                    Quality is Day 1 activity
ii)                  Quality requires traceability
iii)                Quality needs endorsement
iv)                Quality takes continuous effort


The fifth speaker was Mr. Eddie Rong (Director, EntreLink) and he introduced EntreLink that is NGO ran by startup founders in Hong Kong since 2018.


Then Mr. Eddie Rong briefed their unique service included one-stop shop and focal point, most direct gate and startup collective commitment.


EntreLink joined with HKU and pwc to run the Hong Kong Startup Index which was the first index ranking the favorability of business environments in Hong Kong, ASEAN & East Asian cities.


The last speaker was Mr. Jason Chiu (Chairman, Hong Kong Startup Council) and he introduced the startup ecosystem and re-industrialization through Hong Kong Startup Council under FHKI.


Mr. Jason Chiu explained re-industrialization was not return of traditional manufacturing to Hong Kong but integrated the startup and traditional industry to create new value though innovation.


After that he stated the value proposition of Hong Kong Startup Council included “Connectivity”, “Partnership Synergies” and “Innovation”.  And then he briefed different service such as STARS Programme with different topics such as IoT, Smart Energy (CLP sponsor), Toy and Electronics (HSBC sponsor) and Food Tech Industry (Citibank sponsor).


Lastly, Mr. Jason Chiu mentioned four sectors in their ecosystem included “Innovation”, “Industries”, “Public Sector” and “Accelerators & Youths”.


At the end of seminar, all speakers and organizers took a group photo for memory.
