The 6th National Quality Conference 2017 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – Workshop

The 6th National Quality Conference (NQC) organized by Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) aims to meet the updates and enhances the quality culture through spreading the latest knowledge in this field.  Implementation of quality and its practices helps us to achieve the Saudi vision 2030 using the latest quality standards.  Before the conference, they had six workshops which ran parallel in the morning on 28 Nov 2017.  I took a photo of the venue main entry.

I met Dr. Ayed Alamri (President of Saudi Quality Council) (middle) and Dr. Omar Almoamar (Member of conference scientific committee) (Right).  We took a photo for memory.


Then I took a photo with speakers of workshops as follows.
First, I met Prof. Wan Seon Shin (Former President – Korean Society for Quality Management).  We are old friend in Asia Network for Quality (ANQ).  His workshop topic entitled “Korea’s Best Practices for Quality Improvement ”.


Prof. Shin’s workshop aimed to share the key success factors of Korean strategies of achieving excellence in quality and to help the participants experience a select set of quality performance measures.
Moreover, the workshop included the following sub-titles.
1.       The Power of Quality in Korea
2.       The Impact of Quality Leadership: Samsung, Hyundai & LG
3.       Quality Performance Index: National level & Corporate Level
4.       The Value of Quality Training Programs
5.       Action Plans for 4th Industrial Revolution


Then I took photo with Dr. Robin Mann (CEO of the Centre for Organizational Excellence Research, New Zealand) and Dr. Ayed Alamri in Robin’s workshop named “Benchmarking for Best Practices & Organizational Excellence”.


Dr. Robin Mann is the founder of the TRADE Best Practice Benchmarking Methodology and he explained his experience in Dubai Government Excellence Program.

Ms. Minda Chiang had attended his topic and recorded some of his workshop about new quality professionals’ value on “Good Governance”, “Agile Assurance” and “Evaluation and Improvement”.   Then he gave an overview of the CQI competency framework and how this demands that Quality Professionals played an important role in the delivery of change.


Finally, he summarized his eight change model and new roles and competency of the 21st Quality Professionals.  


Eng. Saleh Al-Sulami (KSA) is the founder and the leader of E-commerce (the digital transformation) in Abdul Latif Jameel Company and his workshop topic was “Kaizen and Saudi Vision 2030”.  Kaizen is a Japanese word which has two parts; the first part is "Kai" which means the correct performance and practices and the second part is "zen" which means the perfection.  Kaizenhaa "Kaizen it" is one of these programs that meets the concerns of future leaders of youth who are considered a cornerstone in achieving the Saudi Vision 2030.


Dr. Mustafa Alem (KSA, Consultant of quality and institutional excellence) workshop entitled “The institutional excellence and the Saudi vision 2030” and its topic included the follows:
1.       The institutional excellence as a strategic requirement for the national development.
2.       Institutional Excellence and its relation to Vision 2030.
3.       The map to implement the institutional excellence in the public and private sector consistent with the Saudi vision 2030.


Finally, I attended Dr. Eva Diedrichs (Founding Managing Director European Innovation Management Academy, German) workshop.  She is founding Managing Director of the IMP³rove – European Innovation Management Academy EWIV, (www.improve-innovation.eu), providing innovation management support services to enterprises, consultants and business advisors, to public institutions focusing on innovation management support for economic development as well as to financial actors and academia.


In the beginning, Dr. Awadh Salim Alharbi (Executive officer, Group Chairman of Quality in Charity Sector, Saudi Quality Council) introduced Dr. Eva Diedrichs with her workshop entitled “Measuring and benchmarking innovation management capabilities”.  Firstly, Dr. Eva Diedrichs reviewed different definition of innovation and her like Steve Jobs one that was “Innovation distinguishes between leader and follower”.  


Then she introduced the IMP³rove Academy’s holistic approach to innovation and innovation management which included product, process, service and business model innovation.  


After that she mentioned the House of Innovaiton which described five levels below.
1.       Innovation strategy
2.       Organization and culture
3.       Innovation life cycle processes
4.       Enabling factors
5.       Innovation results


After break, she discussed the innovation strategy in the compass for the firm’s journey to growth.  The objectives of the innovation strategy were mentioned as follows.
1.       Defines and communicates a vision for Innovation
2.       Documents transparently innovation targets
3.       Aligns the firm’s organization to the growth targets
4.       Provides feedback and long-time-perspective of innovation targets
In order to set innovation strategy, the business context should be analyzed thoroughly.  Some successful innovators such as Google, 3M and Tesla were mentioned. 


Finally, IMP³rove Idea Wheel was introduced and we needed to do some exercises.  


At the end,  Dr. Eva Diedrichs discussed the benchmarks innovation management capabilities and performance through IMP³rove assessment.
