Big Data & Analytics Forum 2017

The Big Data & Analytics Forum 2017, organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) Information Technology Discipline in collaboration with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), the Association of Cloud and Mobile Computing Professionals (ACMCP).  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and the China & Hong Kong Enterprise Market Development Association (EMDA) are supporting organizations.  The theme of the forum is “Making the World Smart, Interactive and Engaging”. I took a photo with Dr. Joseph Leung (Vice Principal – adm, IVE) my EngD cohort for memory. 

In the beginning, Mr. George Tee (CTO, HKSTP) gave welcoming speech. He said big data and its analytics would empower ICT including IoT, AI and Cloud computing.  Recently, HKSTP launched Data Studio to provide environment and platform for developers use.  Moreover, IVE was one of partners.  It could enhance our data-based industry.

Then Mrs. Carrie Yau (Executive Director, Vocational Training Council (VTC)) gave an opening address.  She said big data located in the front line of innovation.  Industry increased demand on data experts to improve their business.  The forum could share insight on big data and analytics.  Moreover, she said this year was the 35 anniversary of VTC.  

After that Mr. Emil Chan (Chairman, ACMCP) gave a remark named “Closing Big Data Gap is one of the Utmost Tasks of Hong Kong”.  He shared his feeling and observation in Mainland that they developed very fast on digital transformation and we delayed for 2 to 4 years.  One problem we met was talent mis-matching.  He said we needed to open mind to think what would be after 10 years.

The keynote speaker was Mr. Victor Lam, JP (Deputy Government Chief Information Officer (Infrastructure and Operations), Office of the Government Chief Information Officer) and his topic entitled “Big Data for Smart Government”. Firstly, he told us there were 2.5 quintillion (10^18) bytes of data created every day in 2016 and 90% were generated in recently two years.  

He used the iceberg diagram to show big data feathers.  He said the market value of big data increased 11.9% annually through 2020.  Because big data analytics could help to understand what had happened and improved efficiency on internal operations and client services.  

Then Mr. Lam introduced government’s big data analytics capability included Human capital, Data itself as an enabler, Tools and Infrastructure.  The Data.Gov.hk was the public sector information (PSI) provided near 7000 datasets and 730 APIs, as well as, historical data.  

At the end, he expected big data and PSI were major pillars of smart city development in Hong Kong.

The first speaker in the morning was Mr. Samson Tai (IBM Distinguished Engineer, Chief Technologist, IBM Hong Kong) and his presentation named “Building and Innovation with Data”.  He said 85% of millennials believed that a mobile experience should be better than a desktop.  The problem is how to us this data and find the value.  

He then raised some examples of AI ChatBot those assisted the retail business as private virual assistant using message application such as Facebook message. 

Finally, Mr. Tai introduced four types of data-driven professionals employed in IBM Watson Data Platform included Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Business Analyst and Application Developer. 

During the tea break, I introduced my boss Mr. Kevin Edmund (Senior Manager, Sustainability, HKSTP) to Dr. Joseph Leung and took a photo together. 

Since I leaved for another activity, it was pity to missing HKSQ member Dr. Jacky Ting (Digital Services Lead (Greater China), Cognizant Technology Solutions (HK) Ltd.) talk named “Building a Smart Cities Ecosystem”.
