HKIE Webinar – The Secret of Tesla Battery Technology

The HKIE webinar named “The Secret of Tesla Battery Technology” was held on 28th July 2021. The seminar aimed to share the driving of the energy transition from non-renewable energy to sustainable energy, sustainable transportation is an inevitable trend of humankind.  Tesla, one of the leading energy companies, has been playing an important role to accelerate the electric vehicle (EV) transition.


Four guest speakers from Tesla were introduced.


The first speaker was Ms. Tania Wong (HR Manager, Tesla) and she started with the business overview of Tesla. She said Roadster in 2008 for low volume, then Model S and Model X in 2012 & 2015 for middle volume, as well as, Model 3 in 2017 for High Volume. 


After introduced EV, Ms. Wong mentioned their future plan for producing clean energy, energy storage and transport including full self-driving capability, as well as, Gigafactories.  Finally, she shared their today’s information summary on production, employee, EV and Supercharger Station, etc.


The second speaker was Mr. Adrian Wong (Technical Training Instructor, Tesla) and he introduced Tesla Battery Architecture and Management System. Firstly, Mr. Wong briefed different Li-ion Cells (NCA - nickel cobalt aluminum) in Model S, X using 4.2V-3.1V (nominal voltage range) and Model 3 & Model & using 4.2V-2.9V (nominal voltage range)


Then he shared the pack structure for Model S & X that was from 336V to 384V series parallel and for Model 3 & Y using 400V series parallel structure. For Model 3 & Y, 31 to 46 cell is 1 brick.  23 to 25 brick is 1 Module and 4 Modules to be 1 pack.


The third speaker was Mr. Marco Leung (Business Development Manager, Tesla). He shared on the technology and development of Tesla Superchargers.


Finally, Mr. Leung stated the charging pin and its layout.


The last speaker was Mr. Alvin Chan (Enterprise Manager, Tesla) and he briefed about the enterprise strategy of Tesla.  Firstly, he shared the Hong Kong Roadmap on Popularisation of Electric Vehicles.


Finally he introduced their strategy including competitive price, service & maintenance, and charging network. Some breakthrough technologies would be focused such as safety, range and autopilot.  Lastly, he shared their three key success factors that were Policy, Industry and Community.
