CAAI Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence 2020 (中国人工智能大会) - Day 2

The 6th Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence (CCAI2020) which was led by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI), was held on Aug 29-30, 2020, in Nanjing, China. Since COVID-19 affected globally, the Congress was run both online and offline. The frame of congress named Intellectual Know for Everything (智周万物).  I was committee member of the CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) attended the congress online in this time.  


Day 2 (30 Aug 2020):
In the beginning, Prof. Yang Qiang (杨强 - CAAI名誉副理事长,微众银行首席AI) chaired the Morning session for keynotes.  


The first speaker was Prof. Yolanda Gil (人工智能促进会现任主席,南加州大学信息科学研究所科研副主任) and her topic was “Thoughtful Artificial Intelligence: Forging a New Partnership for Data Science and Scientific Discovery”. Firstly, she briefed AI application had separated into Data Thread and Knowledge Thread.  


Prof. Gil discussed four main points in this talk including Knowledge Technology, AI and its interdisciplinary frontiers and Thought AI. 


Then she mentioned the Thoughtful AI using the photo of Freestyle Chess Champion Anson Williams and quoted Gary Kasparov (2010) statement that “Weak human + machine + better process was superior to a strong computer alone and, more remarkably, superior to a strong human + machine + inferior process.”  And then she explained seven Thoughtful AI principles. 
i)                    Rationality Principle – From knowledge to behavior
ii)                  Context Principle – Capture the purpose and significance of tasks
iii)                Initiative Principle – Self-driven learning from the scientific record or through independent inquiry
iv)                Network Principle – Seek resources from a knowledge web of the scientific record
v)                  Articulation Principle – Communicating findings to different audiences and respond but also ask and discuss.
vi)                Ethical Principle – Behavior that conveys awareness of scope and limitations
vii)              Systems Principle – Compositionality, abstraction, connectivity


At the end, Prof. Yolanda Gil gave conclusion on Thoughtful AI in the following four points:
i)                    Knowledge technologies are increasing important.
ii)                  AI offers systematic, correct, unbiased approaches and rigorous reporting.
iii)                AI will excel at assembling fragmented knowledge about complex systems and pursue interdisciplinary frontiers.
iv)                Thoughtful AI will exploit knowledge technologies for effective human-AI partnerships.


The second speaker was Dr. Ming Zhou (周明 - 微软亚洲研究院副院长) and his presentation was “Pre-trained Models in Multi-Lingual and Multi-Modality Tasks” (预训练模型在多语言、多模态任务的进展). 


Firstly, Dr. Zhou explained the pre-trained model concept and its application such as for text, auto-encoding, classification, question-answering … etc.  Then he explained why pre-trained models need as follows:
i)                    Pre-trained models embed task-agnostic general knowledge.
ii)                  Pre-trained models transfer learnt knowledge to downstream tasks.
iii)                Pre-trained models supports almost all NLP tasks with state-of-the-art results.
iv)                Provide a scalable solution to various applications.


After that he briefed pre-trained models in multi-lingual tasks and multi-modality tasks.  And they got a good evaluation results.


Finally, Dr. Zhou summarized their future works included pre-trained models in NN-NLP and explore new tasks, model architectures and empowered with interpretation mechanisms to NN-NLP.

CAAI Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence 2020 (中国人工智能大会) - Day 1

The frame of congress named Intellectual Know for Everything (智周万物).  I was committee member of the CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) attended the congress online in this time.

Day 1 (29 Aug 2020): (Opening Session)
In the beginning, Prof. Zhou Zhihua (周志华 – CAAI副理事长, 南京大学计算机系主任, 人工智能学院院长) chaired this session and he introduced today’s guest speakers.  


Prof. Dai Qionghai (戴琼海 - CAAI理事长,中国工程院院士,清华大学信息学院院长) gave guest speech.  Prof. Dai said CCAI 2020 as one of the largest official AI conferences in China, CCAI has been held annually to promote the advancement of artificial intelligence globally.  He appreciated all co-organizers and supporting organizations.  


 Mr. Xu Chunsheng (徐春生江苏省科学技术协会副主席) gave a guest speech and he said Jiangsu Province enhanced the development on AI including industry and education. He expected they could achieve the AI demonstration province in 2025.


Mr. Liang Aiguo (梁爱国 - 南京市建邺区副书记) gave a guest speech.  He welcome all guests in Jianye District, Nanjing.  CCAI as AI platform would enhance AI development in Jianye District.  


Then Mr. Yang Bo (杨波 南京市建邺区政府副区长, 建邺高新区党工委书记) gave an introduction speech for investment and environment in Jianye District, Nanjing.  Jiangsu Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island Economy Development Zone (江苏南京生态科技岛) was introduced at the end. 


After that Prof. Ye Jieping (叶杰平滴滴出行副总裁, 滴滴AI Labs 负责人, 密西根大学教授) chaired the keynotes session.


The first speaker was Prof. Yoshua Bengio (加拿大蒙特利尔大学教授,2018年图灵奖获得者,蒙特利尔学习算法研究) and his topic entitled “Deep Learning: from System 1 to System 2”.  Firstly, Prof. Bengio briefed the neural net approach to AI including Brain-inspired.  He said not copy brain but inspired by brain to AI.


Then he quoted the concept of System 1 and System 2 in the book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” to explain the cognition. 


And then he continued to explain all items inspired by human cognition one by one.  Prof. Bengio added consciousness from humans reporting such as high-level representation (e.g. language) and high-level concepts (e.g. tie system 1&2) and needed to understand grounded language learning (e.g. BabyAI).  


Finally, Prof. Bengio concluded we have a responsibility that ML going out of labs, into society and considered society impact.


The second speaker was Prof. Yang Qiang (杨强 - CAAI名誉副理事长,微众银行首席AI) and his topic named “The latest development of Federated Learning” (联邦学习最新进展).  He said AI power come from Big Data that increasing of Data caused error reducing and accuracy increasing every year. 


Then Prof. Yang Qiang said many small data as an island which were not able to contribute for AI model.  Therefore, Federated Learning could overcome this problem to consolidate those small data without losing their privacy information (e.g. GDPR violations).  He added that Data did not move but model move!


And then he briefed the data privacy development in Shenzhen that those rules become strict.

SGS Lunch-and-Learn Webinar - Agile Approach to Business

SGS cooperated with InfoWorks Institute to run lunch-and-learn series which aimed to share the business transformation trend of the future of work.  Dr. David Mui was the speaker and shared the topic “Agile Approach to Business”. It is the second class of Management Shift for Industrial 4.0 Series.  The content included Business Agility Domains, Agile Team and Agile Leadership.


Firstly, Dr. Mui introduced 5 Business Agility Domains from Business Agility Institute.  He quoted the statement to explain that “The purpose of this model is to show you what to strive for and how to get started. These are essential building blocks for agile organizations.”


Then Dr. Mui explain domains one by one below.
Domain 1 – The Core is Customer.
Domain 2 – Relationship: Board, Partners and Workforce.
Domain 3 – Leadership: Strategic Agility, One Team and People Management.
Domain 4 – Individuals: Ownership & Accountability, Growth Mindset and Graft Excellence.
Domain 5 – Operations: Structural Agility, Enterprise Agility and Process Agility.
And then he stated different phases of Agility Adoption from personal to one team to one function to multiple function to organization and finally become organization DNA.  He added “Startups have an advantage of agility adoption.”


After that he introduced Agile Team that team would employ Agile Scrum process.  The core of Scrum team that separated jobs into small tasks under Sprint (task short cycle to create prototype). Sprint cycle usually defined as 2 week for IT project.


The role of Agile Team included Team members, Scrum Master and Product Owner.  Where Scrum Master worked as coacher / facilitator in the team.


Dr. Mui compared the different between tradition team and Agile team in the following table. 


Finally, Dr. Mui introduced Agile Leadership and its different roles.


The comparison between Traditional Leadership and Agile Leadership was showed and it obviously changed from top-down approach to bottom-up approach.


Q&A Session:
I asked what is the different between Agile and traditional QA such as Scrum Master vs Quality Facilitator, Sprint vs PDCA.  Dr. David Mui said Scrum Master was focused on coaching and Sprint was similar to PDCA but using new terms for organization transformation / change.

Huawei Global Intelligent Education Summit 2020

Huawei Global Intelligent Education Summit 2020 was held on 27th Aug 2020.  The theme named “Embracing the New Era of Intelligent Education”.  It aims to explore the use of cutting-edge technologies — including Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G, cloud computing, big data, and high-speed networking — that promote the digital transformation of the education industry and facilitate innovation in teaching management.  Mr. Thomas Xu (VP, Huawei Global Government Business Unit) was the first speaker and his topic entitled “Technological Innovations Boost Digital Transformation of Education 2020”.


Firstly, Mr. Xu introduced education models on learning, contents and teaching which transferred to more personalized.  And he briefed three challenges of such model transformation process and they were ‘Connectivity’, ‘Efficiency’ and ‘Resources’.  


And then Mr. Xu proposed ICT that could improve education models transformation to achieve diversified teaching approaches.  Finally, he introduced Huawei’s Technological Innovations Facilitate Education Transformation which was a complex and systematic project.


Dr. Tao Zhan (Director, UNESCO Institute for IT in Education (IITE)) was the second speaker and his presentation title named “How COVID-19 is Reshaping Education Today and Tomorrow”.   Firstly, he mentioned the challenges and UNESCO’s response because of the world education system not prepared for the pandemic. 


Secondly, Dr. Zhan mentioned the leassons-learned from COVID-19 pandemic that was to accelerate digitalization of education.


Finally, Dr. Zhan concluded that going digital was a new era of education.


The third speaker was Mr. Fahem al Nuaimi (CEO, Ankabut, UAE) and his presentation was “Activate Intelligent Era - Intelligent Education Cloud”.   In the beginning, Mr. Nuaimi introduced the top 5 trends in education industry.


Then he briefed how ICT drive intelligent education that would be no longer passive learning, fixed classroom, difficult to find knowledge, lack of teaching resource and poor management.


Lastly, Mr. Fahem al Nuaimi summarized Ankabut Cloud Education including Cloud Business Transformation, Operations Reliability, Unified Management and Service Innovation.


Prof. Wu Peng (Director of the Principal's Office, Director of the Data Resource Management Office, Soochow University) was the fourth speaker and his presentation entitled “On-Cloud Soochow University - Education of the Future”.  Firstly, Prof. Wu Peng briefed the on-cloud Soochow University was Digital, Mirroring and Intelligent.  He said digital transformation needed Mindset, Architecture and Mechanism transformation together.


Then Prof. Wu mentioned for cases as follows:
Case 1: On-Cloud Classroom
Case 2: 360 degree Smart Classroom
Case 3: On-Cloud Growth System
Case 4: Operation Center (On-Cloud Brain)


Finally, Prof. Wu expected the future outlook included to create a new campus life, to explore a new form of university and to develop a set of standards for future universities.


Prof. Francisco Herrera (President, Central American Higher Education Council (CSUCA)) was the fifth speaker and his topic was “Consolidating ICT Infrastructure Construction and Embracing Teaching Mode Innovation”. He briefed some challenges of the future teaching and learning, and then pointed out technology was the answer.


He also encouraged to make a better future of scientific research and teaching through ICT innovations.  Lastly, he concluded that technology is the road to the future, especially in campuses.


The last speaker was Mr. Anthony Xu (President of the Education Indsutry of Huawei Global Government Business Unit) and his presentation entitled “Building Better Education World Through ICT Innovations & Release of the Scenario-based Solutions”.  In the beginning, he said ICT is one of key elements for improving the education quality.


And then Mr. Xu introduced Smart Education Hierarchies included three layers and they were Smart Education ICT Infrastructure, Education Application & Platform, and Digital Education Contents.


Finally, he introduced Wi-Fi 6 products and IdeaHub Series to enhance learning experience under Huawei Smart Education Hierarchies in Smart Classroom.


Before end of summit, a Smart Classroom Solution video was played.
