HKPC AI & 5G Workshop: Alibaba Damo Academy and Huawei (阿里巴巴達摩院及華為工作坊)

The AI & 5G Workshop to visit to Alibaba Damo Academy and Huawei was jointly organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and HKAI Lab  on 30 Sep 2019. Artificial intelligence and 5G technology complement each other. Leading companies and 5G network providers in the field of artificial intelligence in the world have been clamoring for the 5G network generation. This visit ot Alibaba Dharma Institute and the Huawei Workshop aimed to enable the industry to master the solutions and trends of artificial intelligence and 5G integration development.  I took a photo with Taobao sculpture in front of the entry of Ali Center.

Different floor had different companies in the center. We went to the 9/F.  


In the beginning, Mr. Jeffrey Sit (General Manager, Smart Manufacturing and Mainland Business, HKPC) gave introductory speech on this workshop and visit.


Then Mr. Timothy Leung (Executive Director, HKAI Lab) gave a speech and he had been Ali-man before.  


Firstly, Dr. Zhang Lei (張磊) (达摩院城市大脑实验室高级研究员) introduced the AI Centre of Alibaba DAMO Academy. It is dedicated to exploring the unknown through scientific and technological research and innovation and founded on 11 Oct 2017.  He said his nickname in DAMO Academy was “Three Stone” (三石) and every staff had their nick name based on Martial Art Novel in the beginning.  However, almost all names had been used and then relaxed to other special nickname.


Then Dr. Zhang introduced the position of DAMO Academy that research for solving the problem with profit and fun.  Their visions are to live longer than Alibaba and service to the whole world at least upto 2 billion people, as well as, using technology to solve future problem.


And then Dr. Zhang demonstrated some applications in visual intelligent computing in DAMO Academy included video image process, medical image process, industrial inspection and City Brain.  One of examples is to change Jack Ma video frame automatically

HKSQ AGM Seminar on Industry 4.0 in Quality Management

HKSQ Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 27 Sep 2019 and a seminar named “Industry 4.0 in Quality Management”.  This seminar aims to enable participants to acquire basic understanding of Industry 4.0 data-driven quality management and its implementation in your business process. Quality Professional will need to embrace i4.0 technologies and use them to drive innovation while improving overall quality.  I would like to share both HKSQ Seminar and AGM 2019 below.  Firstly, I introduced tonight guest speaker Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Director Operations, INC Invention Center Hong Kong) and he had been helping companies innovate in the context of Industry 4.0 in Germany.


In the beginning, Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Director Operations, INC Invention Center Hong Kong) briefed the vehicle industry design, production and product such as BMW.  


By allowing to analyze data from design, production and product in use, Industry 4.0 (i4.0) enabled new levels of detecting and removing quality issues in manufacturing.  


Then Mr. Patrick Kabasic introduced INC Invention Center and their vision was “We create world class innovations”.  Invention Center led research partners (e.g. Fraunfofer IPT, HKPC, etc.) enabled Big Innovations to happen.  They also provided services to Hong Kong-Guangdong Greater Bay Area.


And then he used the roundabout in Berlin, Germany and Paris, France to explain self-organizing system.  Even though car capacity is higher, its accident is also high.  In order to reduce the accident and increase capacity, data from all cars and environment should be analyzed to make the right scheduling. 


Mr. Patrick Kabasic introduced Smart i4.0 navigator in which started from “Value” to New Digital Business Models through Smart Products, Process, Networks & Production.  Each device consisted four enablers and they were Sensors & Input, Connectivity, Data Analytics and Output & Human-machine interfaces (HMI).

Visit to Jiaozhou, Qingdao during CCAI 2019 (中国人工智能大会)

The 5th Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence (CCAI2019) which was led by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI), was held on Sep 21-22, 2019, in Jiaozhou Qingdao, China. As the largest official AI conference in China, CCAI has been held annually to promote the advancement of artificial intelligence globally. The frame of congress namedIntellectual Change and Fusion (智变融合). I as member of CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and joined the congress.  When I arrived the airport of Qingdao, I saw the staff to receive us and arranged bus to go to three congress hotels every hour.


I stayed in Jiaozhou Hotel (膠州賓館). 


There had congress reception in each hotel.


I walked outside and found many book shop and Xinhua Bookstore had coffee shop inside.


Food Street also found underground. 


I enjoy my noodle with Tsingtao beer.  


Outside the square, many performance practiced here.


One singer sang a song named “I am Chinese”.


When I want back to hotel, I met Mrs. Li and Prof. Xingsen Li (李興森).

CAAI Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence 2019 (中国人工智能大会) - Day 2

The 5th Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence (CCAI2019) which was led by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI), was held on Sep 21-22, 2019, in Jiaozhou Qingdao, China. As the largest official AI conference in China, CCAI has been held annually to promote the advancement of artificial intelligence globally. The frame of congress namedIntellectual Change and Fusion (智变融合).  The CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) representatives participated the CCAI 2019. I attended the Congress and summarized it for sharing AI trend to all quality professionals. I am honor to have a chance to take photo with Prof. Deyi Li (李德毅) (President of CAAI, Academician of CAE) at the end of the congress.

Before the Day 2 program, I visited the exhibition area and took some photo for memory.  I saw President Xi statement about AI policy.  


The exhibition hall demonstrated the AI strategies in different countries in the world in 2017 and 2018, respectively. 


Then “AI +” enable different industries were demonstrated.


I visited different AI companies counter. The congress instant translation service was employed iFLYTEK technology.


Baidu and Tmall were also here.


I took a photo with robot.

Motion identification was demonstration for participants.

CAAI Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence 2019 (中国人工智能大会) - Day 1

So many experts attended the congress.


Before the congress, a video was played to introduce the CCAI and China AI policy.


Day 1 (21 Sep 2019): (Opening Session)
In the beginning, Mr. Xue Qingguo (薛庆国 中共青岛市常委,市政府党组副书记、副市长) chaired this session. Firstly, he introduced today’s guest speakers.  


Mr. Wang Qingxian (王清宪 山东省委常委、青岛市委书记) gave guest speech.  He said to hold CCAI as policy could be very successful to activate the city to modernize Qingdao.  He called it as “AI Science and Technology Application Service Industry”. 


Prof. Deyi Li (李德毅) (President of CAAI, Academician of CAE) gave a guest speech and he said manufacturing was the backbone of the national economic.  AI could enhance smart manufacturing.

CityU Seminar on the challenges and responses of AI to Public Management

The Department of Public Policy, CityU arranged a seminar named “The Challenges and Responses of Artificial Intelligence to the Public Management”.  The USA, China and the EU have launched strategies and policies to complete for the development opportunities of AI.  However, AI also brings a series of public management problems such as employment substitution, etc.  This seminar focused on those topics, based on theoretical discussions, international comparisons, combined with cases to analyze and then put forward some new views and understanding.  I took a photo with Prof. Richard M. Walker (Chair Professor, Acting Head of POL Dept., CityU).


I also took a photo with guest speaker Prof. Liang Zheng (Professor, School of Public Policy and Management; Deputy Director, China Institute for Science and Technology Policy (CISTP), Tsinghua University).


In the beginning, Prof. Liang Zheng briefed his talk content included i) The development of AI in China; ii) The challenge of AI for public management; iii) Key issues – Data Governance; iv) Key issues – Platform governance; and v) Opinions and recommendations.


Firstly, Prof. Liang mentioned the background of China’s AI strategies included “Made in China 2025” in 2015, “The 13th five-year plan for national science and technology innovation” in 2016 and “Development plan for the new generation artificial intelligence” in 2017.  Then he introduced China Institute for Science and Technology Policy (CISTP), Tsinghua University which had involved in the policy study and draft.  


Then Prof. Liang compared China and the world on Science and Technology output such as research papers (China is leader on AI research papers with high impact), Patent (China > US > Japan).  For international AI talent, China’s AI specialists reached 18,232 (8.9% of the global total), next only to the US (13.9%).  However, China has a lower percentage of top talents.   He also stated industry development in China had 1011 AI companies by June 2018 but still significantly behind the US which had 2028 companies.  Nevertheless, China has the highest venture investment in AI.

Lunch with Prof. Raymond Chan and Prof. CS Lee in CityU for College of Science’s Mentorship Programme

I was honor to be invited by Prof. Raymond Chan (Dean of College of Science) and Prof. CS Lee (Head of Department of Chemistry) to have lunch for discussing the College of Science’s Mentorship Programme.  Mr. Nelson Yip is another invited guest and he is Honorary Fellow of the CityU. We are both member of CityU Eminence Society (CES) and mentor in Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO).



During the discussion, we knew Mr. Nelson Yip had many cooperation program for student internship and startup in in GBA and the whole mainland China. Moreover, he is partner of the Angel Investment Foundation.

Prof. Lee is interested in my course named “Quality Management in Laboratory” and would like to revitalize for undergraduates in the Chemistry Dept.  Moreover, I represented HKSQ and cooperated with HKQAA had been awarded TID SME Development Fund for the project named “Feasibility study on the quality of Hong Kong start-up development for supporting the sustainable business growth” in this year.

Hopefully, our effort could contribute to CityU and benefit to students.

ASQ Shenzhen LMC Seminar on Minus Quality Assurance (-QA) (減法品質保證)

ASQ Shenzhen LMC organized a seminar on “Minus Quality Assurance (- QA)” (減法品質保證) on 8th Sep 2019 (Sunday) in Shenzhen.  The seminar is full within two hours after the post published.  Dr. Aaron Tong (China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人)) was invited to be the honorary speaker.  Minda and I represented HKSQ to support Aaron’s talk.  Before the seminar, we were invited by ASQ Shenzhen LMC to have lunch together.

Dr. Pat Cheung, Minda and I prepared to learn from Aaron.  You could feel how hot in Shenzhen.  


In the beginning, Mr. Simon Lee (Vice Chair, ASQ Shenzhen LMC) introduced the guest speaker and the only one awarded the China Outstanding Quality Professional (中國傑出質量人) in GBA – Dr. Aaron Tong.


Dr. Aaron Tong firstly reviewed different quality cost concepts from 80s, 90s and now.
