HKSQ arranged
a technical visit to the University of Macau (UM) and Macau Quality Management
Association (MQMA) on 3 Jun 2016. The
visit aimed to focus on the good practices of UM on ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
implementation after their relocation; and network with management
professionals from MQMA. HKSQ members
were gathered in Macau Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal and took a group photo
before the visit.
We visited UM
first and met Mr. Michael Leung (Leader of EMS Workgroup (Head of HSEO)) and
Jason (Leader of QMS Workgroup (Senior HR Manager (System) of HRO)) and they
introduced some background of UM.
Michael
briefed the history of UN that the University of East Asia, predecessor of UM,
was founded in 1981. So this year is the
35th Anniversary of UM. Moreover,
he mentioned TIMES Higher Education World University Rankings results on
2014-15 that UM stands in 276-300. 100
under 50 Rankings 2015 is 39 and Asia University Rankings 2015 is 40.
Then Jason
briefed the ISO journey of UM as follows:
1st
Batch (Aug 2001 to Jul 2002) – ISO 9001 for general administration and offices,
etc.
2nd
Batch (Sep 2002 to May 2003) – ISO 9001 for Academic Affairs Bureau, Library
& Publication Centre, etc.
3rd
Batch (Mar 2004 to May 2005) – ISO 9001 for Faculty of BA, Edu, Law, Social
Science, S&T and Centre for Pre-University Studies
4th
Batch (Oct 2006 to May 2007) – ISO 9001 for Institute of Chinese Medical
Sciences, Centre for Continuing Edu & Macau Studies, and English Language
Centre
5th
Batch (Jan 2008 to May 2008) – ISO 14001 for all units
6th
Batch (Dec 2010 to Apr 2011) – ISO 9001 for Office of HSE Affairs
(Due to the
New Campus Project and Relocation, certification process suspended in
2012. It resumed on 1 Dec 2015.)
7th
Batch (Dec 2015) – ISO 9001 for Faculty of Health Sciences, Campus Development
Office and Alumni Development Office, as well as, Office of Sports Affairs
The
certification audit had been performed on 17 to 19 May 2016.
The management
structure of QEMS was mentioned. There are
two workgroups that one is responsible on QMS and the other is responsible on
EMS. During Q&A
session, we knew that the initial audit performed by 2 auditors for 2 days (4
manday) and the certification audit performed by 4 auditors for 3 days (12
manday).
Dr. Aaron Tong
(Former chairman, HKSQ) presented HKSQ flag and publications to Michael and
Jason for appreciation.
Then we took a
group photo outside the office.
After that we
visited the library.
Finally, we
took a group photo under the Name of University of Macau and Library was the
background building.
After the
lunch in UM, Aaron led HKSQ team to visit Macau Quality Management Association
(MQMA). Dr. LC Koo (Chairman, MQMA) briefed
the background of the association and their activities.
Dr. Koo
arranged the visit to Macau Gaming Research Association.
Since Minda
and I had visited it before, so we stayed in UM and visited our friend Prof. Simon
Lee (Professor, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences).
Then we visited
his research laboratory especially Zebrafish.
The animal
room facility was briefed by Simon.
Finally, Simon
introduced the Capsule Liquid Filling and Band Sealing Machine to us
Simon and I took
a photo in front of UM logo.
Minda and I
visited the University Gallery.
Inside the
gallery, we found much information about the teaching principles and model of
campus.
The current
status of UM was observed and student, academic staff and budget were found
increasing yearly.
New Academic
Structure was introduced.
New Philosophy
named “4-in-1” Education Model was demonstrated. It included “Discipline-specific education”, “Research
and Internship Education”, “General Education” and “Community and Peer
Education”.
At the end of
UM visit, I took a photo in front of Confucius sculpture.
