I was honor to be invited to join
the CSE Discovery and Innovation Gala 2016 organized by the Cooperative
Education Centre, College of Science and Engineering (CSE) of CityU on 22 Jun
2016. The gala would be held from 22 to
23 Jun 2016 and it aimed to demonstrate their research capability and
achievements to be better appreciated by the industrial and commercial sectors,
hence opening up further opportunities for collaborations of mutual benefits.
I am lucky to get President Prof.
Way Kuo signature on his new book named “高等教育的心件” and took a photo for memory. I found the key point of the book that
Research and Teaching should be integrated rather than separated.
I also met Mr. Dominic Lam
(Acting CEO, CMATCL) and my teacher Prof. Paul Lam (Chief-of-Staff
(Vice-President) and Chair Professor of Biology (Department of Biology and
Chemistry), CityU) and we took a photo together.
(Left: Mr. YK Lau (Senor Manager,
Env, Food & Pharm Division, CMATCL), Mr. Dominic Lam, I and Prof. Paul Lam)
Mr. Nicholas W. Yang (Secretary
for Innovation and Technology, ITB, HKSAR) was our guest and exchanging ideas
with different alumni, industrial representatives and professionals during the
cocktail.
In the beginning, Prof. Way Kuo
(President, CityU) gave an opening speech and he told us CityU’s Engineering
Programme is one of the best programmes in the world.
Mr. Nicholas W. Yang was our officiating
guest and he shared the ITB policy for university such as HK$2 billion
Midstream Research Programme for UGC-funded institutions for more translational
research and theme-based, longer term R&D.
Nevertheless, he said “Process of science discovery in fact is
continuously fighting.”
Then Prof. Arthur B. Ellis
(Provost and Chair Professor, BCH Dept., CityU) gave a speech and he said CityU
reviewed its curriculum regularly. When
student come to CityU, they are expected to create and discover. CityU would be Discovery Land such as CityU
Apps Lab.
Prof. Yan Hong (Dean of CSE,
CityU) was the last speaker and he introduced CityU research capability and there
were 100 research projects at CSE.
Prof. Michael Lam (Assistant Dean
(Student Training and Placement) and Professor of BCH Dept., CityU) was the MC
of this lunch event.
Prof. Way Kuo and Prof. Yan Hong presented souvenir to honorable guest Mr. Nicholas W. Yang.
Then all guest and academic staff
took a group photo.
CityU SEEM EngD cohorts took a group photo with Mr. Nicholas W. Yang and Prof. Way Kuo for memory. We had just invited Dr. David Chung (Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, ITB, HKSAR) to give a talk for our cohorts on 18 Jun 2016 (Last Saturday).
I also met Mr. WK Lee (Executive
Director, Castco Testing Centre Ltd.). We are members of HKQF-TIC-ITAC.
After the lunch, we visited difference
researches demonstration.
I was interested in the research
named “Surveillance of Crowded Environments” that could count number of people
in the crowd in photo or video (dynamic)!
The research student also demonstrated
the result and density map through video.
We also listen the new
biotechnology named “Multifunctional DNA-based Nanomaterials for Biomedical
Applications”.
Then I took a photo with my
friend Dr. CC Cheung (VP, Business Development & Operation, Aviton Care
Limited) and new friend Dr. Alan Chow (FCG).
(Left: I, Dr. Alan Chow, Dr. CC
Cheung and the research student)
