PMI Seminar on DFSS to Project Management

The seminar entitled "Design for Six Sigma to Project Management" was organized by Project Management Institute (PMI) Hong Kong Chapter on 10th Mar 2015. The aim of this seminar to explore Design for Six Sigma and share lessons learned on the implementation approach for multiple perspectives such as organizational capability, customer feedback, business & technology risk, design considerations and the use of appropriate methods & tools. Our Chairman (HKSQ) Mr. Peter Fung was invited by PMI to present this seminar. It is our first time to support PMI in Hong Kong. Before the seminar, whole HKSQ team members took a photo for memory.

In the beginning, Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) introduced some background of Hong Kong Society for Quality to our participants.


Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) topic named “Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) Introduction”. In his talk, it included introduction, application, benefit of DFSS and tools, as well as, implementation challenges. The basic Six Sigma DMAIC Roadmap was briefed. Peter then pointed out some problems encountered by Six Sigma.
1. It does not address the customer values deep enough
2. DMAIC-based projects could not solve flawed design
3. Non-valued added processes cannot be completely removed


Peter explained the foundations of DFSS in three key elements using Apple’s products.
1. Customer-oriented design
2. Systematic and creative design
3. Robust performance and prevention philosophy


He said Six Sigma used for improvement but DFSS used for new design of product or service (when improvement was not able to solve the problem). Then he briefed the steps of DFSS included Define (project), Measure, Analyze, Design & Verify (DMADV).
There were many tools which used in DMADV as follows:
D – VOC, QFD, Kano Model
M – Benchmarking, Capability Performance
A – TRIZ & Process Simulation
D – FMEA & DOE
V – SPC & Process Management


Finally, Peter quoted the Project Management flowchart to explain that Project Charter was only responsible to the first three elements of Project Start, but DFSS covered Set Up elements.


At the end he concluded “DFSS is free. It is not a gift, but it is free.” as Philosophy on Cost of Poor Design.
Mr. Anthony Tsui presented a souvenir and certificate to Mr. Peter Fung.
