HKSQ Technical Visit to Alibaba Hong Kong

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) in collaboration with American Society for Quality (Hong Kong) (ASQHK) to arrange a technical visit to Alibaba Hong Kong Office in Causeway Bay on 12th Dec 2014. I would like to summarize the visit for sharing.


Before visit, Mr. Terry Kwok (Senior Account Manager) gave an introduction talk to us. His presentation focused on Alibaba’s Culture. Firstly, Terry briefed Alibaba services including Taobao.com (淘寶網), Tmall.com (天貓), Juhuasuan.com (聚划算), Aliexpress (全球速賣通), Alibaba.com (阿里巴巴) and 1688.com (1688).


Then Terry introduced Mr. Jack Ma (Ma Yun) statement “Our Dream”. It can be interpreted into four company characteristic below.
i) Clear Blue Sky (透明的藍天) – Transparent in Decision, System, Management and Information
ii) Solid Ground (堅實的大地) – Strategy comply Legal and Moral requirement.
iii) Dynamic of Ocean (流動的大海) – Career development by job rotation and person development by learning.
iv) Energetic Green Forest (綠色的充滿氧氣的森林) – Provide creative and happy place for revitalization.


Terry also mentioned their culture on spirit and system. For spirit culture, it included vision, mission, values and target. The following diagram showed what they believed. Smile culture is happy working and serious life; and customer first, staff second and last stakeholder. Their vision has three points below:
i) No. 1 platform for information sharing
ii) To be the Highest happiness index enterprise
iii) Survive 102 year.
(Why set for 102 year? It is because Alibaba started in 1999 and Ma Yun want his company can run over one century.)
Their mission is “To make it easy to do business anywhere.” (讓天下沒有難做的生意).


Terry told us their six values (六脈神劍) included Customer First, Embrace Change, Team Work, Integrity, Passion and Commitment. He said “This is a belief”. Moreover, their target for next Ten years showed as follows:
i) Service for 10 million SMEs
ii) Create 100 million job opportunity
iii) Service for 1000 million consumers

Finally, Terry stated their performance evaluation which based on their “Performance vs Value” chart. The value is much important than performance. Wild dog and dog did no long work in Alibaba. The performance evaluation included self-evaluation and manager evaluation per 3 month. During evaluation, it did not only consider the KPI (result) but also the process.


For staff development, Alibaba provided the fair opportunity platform but staff needed to get it proactively. After training course which did not imply to be growth, we needed to continuous improvement.
Terry shared his promotion paths from P3 – Officer to P6 – Senior Manager to us.
P3 – Officer:
P4 – Manager: Self-Influence
P5 – Senior Manager: Influence other team
P6 – Senior Manager: Influence other region (HK & Taiwan)
P7 – XXX: Influence the whole Alibaba Group


Then we visited their office. Their notice board shared happy photo and some game such as guess “who they are” from kid photos.

Finally, Dr. Albert Tang (Former Chairman, HKSQ) and Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) presented souvenir to Mr. Terry Kwok.


At the end, we took a group photo.
