HKSQ Student Project Competition 2014 - Site Visit to Buddhist Chi King Primary School

The HKSQ Student Project Competition 2014 was sponsored by Woodley Agri-Service Company Limited and Green Technology Consortium (httbbp://www.green-tech-consortium.org) and the field trip will be hosted by Hong Kong Organic Waste Resources Centre (HKOWRC) (有機資源再生中心), located at 上水金錢村金翠路12號. Since the sponsors would like to give more information to student about how to handle and collect food waste in school. We had arranged another site visit to Buddhist Chi King Primary School (佛教慈敬學校) on 8 Mar 2014.

Firstly, Ms. Wong introduced several environmental practices in her school. We took a group photo in front of the plant area.

There were many recycle practices employed in different planting included banner, old broom handles, empty bottles, as well as food waste products.

The following Irrigation setup idea was come from primary school students and it could be tune the water flow rate automatically during holiday.

The swimming pool for turtle was designed to reuse their water for irrigation some plants. Per Ms. Wong said, the product of food waste recycle was employed after composting (腐熟).

After that we went to the food waste processor to understand their collection practice and operation of the machine.

The collection procedure of food waste was shown in the poster.

The machine manufacturer (Mr. Billy Lee) explained the operation procedures and its principle. It is different with others because it is not used the yeast or bacteria for fermentation. The food waste processor is only grinding and steaming the food waste and finally got the compost. After the compost cultivated into soil and the decomposition process continued, so called secondary composting (腐熟). Because of no water, no bacteria and short period of time for handling food waste, no bad smell generated. The following showed some photos about the food waste processor.

The grinding part inside the processor was showed.

Our student tried to operation the machine. (The whole process showed in the reference link.)

Before the end of visit, Mr. Peter Fung (Vice-chairman, HKSQ) presented HKSQ flag to Ms. Wong.
