HKSQ Seminar on Innovation in Service Delivery

The first seminar in World Quality Month (WQM) named "Innovation in Service Delivery - TRIZ in IT system development and Retail modeling" was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and co-organized with ASQ -Hong Kong (ASQHK) and Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) - Hong Kong Software Improvement Network (HKSPIN) on 1 Nov 2013. The seminar aimed to share speaker's wealth of experience of innovation in service delivery and projects on using TRIZ in real-time IT system development and retail modeling. Before the seminar, Mr. Peter Fung (Vice-chairman, HKSQ) introduced HKSQ and the guest speaker.

In the beginning, Ir. Daniel Ng (Shareholder & Director, Kun Hang Group) briefed his experience and introduced TRIZ; then he mentioned Samsung experience in 2004 and TRIZ in Software Development. Ir. Daniel Ng said there were different types of innovation included Product Innovation (e.g. Steve Jobs), Process Innovation (Our status quo) and Transaction Innovation (e.g. 馬雲,馬化騰).

TRIZ was Russian Theory named "Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadatch" and started with Altshuller's interested in invention and worked in Soviet Navy patent office. It was a thinking analogically and started from own problem to generic problem and got the generic solution to own solution.

The following diagram showed the TRIZ main principles about Ideality. TRIZ was not only considered Functionality and Costs, but also considered Harmful effect. One of tools in TRIZ was Function Analysis included Component Analysis, Interaction Analysis and Function Modeling. During contradiction happened, TRIZ would used 39 engineering parameters and 40 innovation principles to due with technical problems.

The evolution of the TRIZ Methodology was demonstrated from 1946 to 2002.

Then Daniel introduced Samsung "Christmas Tree" diagram to implement TRIZ through Ideal Final Result. After that he mentioned TRIZ in Software Development and quoted a book "Umakant Mishra (2013) Using TRIZ for Anti-Virus Development-Building Better Software Through Continuous Innovation".

Finally, Daniel shared different cases such as Internet Mining and Retails, and he concluded that TRIZ is good at IT Control Systems issues included applicator, robots, surveillance and motion detcetion, ASIC computers, sensors, telecommunication and kernel levels programming.
