CQI Seminar on "Life after Quality"

Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) Hong Kong Branch arranged a seminar on "Life after Quality" on 5 Nov 2012. It is as part of World Quality Day activities. SEEM Dept., City University of Hong Kong was co-organizer.

The first speaker was Ir. Eric KC Ng (Chairman, CQI-HK; Principal Consultant, Third-i Consultant) and his presentation entitled "The Up and down of Quality".


Ir. Eric Ng briefed the quality development history in Hong Kong. In 1950-1960, Quality was mainly on sorting. During 1970s, many electronic manufacturers in Hong Kong came from Europe and USA. They brought the quality concepts such as QC/QA, inspection using AQL / LTPD, etc. In 1980, many Japanese quality concepts such as QCC, JIP, PPM were employed.


Accreditation in China and Hong Kong was started in 1985 such as CCIBLAC (China Laboratory Accreditation Committee for Import and Export Commodity Inspection). Next year, six sigma was developed by Motorola. Then the first edition of ISO 9000 series were launch in 1987. After that MIQA became a requirement for working in infrastructure projects for new airport before 1997. General Electric adopts six sigma successfully in 1995. ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 introduced in 1996 and 1999, respectively.

After 2000, environmental and social responsibility issues were concerned by manufacturing in Hong Kong such as RoHS and WEEE. Then Hong Kong industries were focused in Financial, Tourism, Logistic and Construction, etc. Ir. Eric Ng foresaw the development of Hong Kong from 2010 to 2020.


Mr. Leslie Lee (Secretary and Honorary Chairman, CQI-HK) was the second speaker and his topic named "Life After Quality - CQI Development". Leslie explained the World Quality Day event. It aimed to tell the world that Quality is alive and kicking and Quality Professionals needed to believe, practice Quality and be Respected. He said our Integrity and Professionalism were appreciated.


Then Leslie briefed the Chartered Quality Institute which was the chartered body for quality management professionals incorporated by Royal Charter in the UK. The former name was Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) was established in 1919 and awarded the Royal Chartered statuse by Her Majesty QE II in 2006. In 2007, IQA renamed to Chartered Quality Institute (CQI). The diagram showed the CQI logo design background and its definition of Quality. IRCA was introduced which was a subsidiary of CQI.


Leslie said the CQI-HK was the first branch outside UK since 1991. CQI-HK was as a Model for other overseas branches development. The CQI vision is "To place quality at the HEART of every organization". The benefits of CQP was discussed at the end.
