ANQ Congress 2012 - Day 1

In collaboration with China Association for Quality (CAQ) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong Society for Quality co-hosted the 10th ANQ Congress 2012 from 31st July to 3rd August 2012 in Hong Kong. This 2-day Congress (1st & 2nd August 2012) and half-day technical visit (3rd August 2012) will focus on different areas of quality research and implementation such as Service, Manufacturing, Testing and Certification, Healthcare, Environment, Education, etc. The first day of the congress was summarized in the follow and some photos were collected to share below.

In the beginning, Minda and I took a photo in front of the Congress backdrop at registration area.


Before the congress, we met Prof. Phulporn (Honorary Advisor, The Standards & Quality Association of Thailand (SQAT)) and her friend.


The registration desk had ready for service to different countries participants. HKSQ ex-co members (included Dr. Albert Tsang, Mr. Peter Fung, Mr. Humphrey Lee and Mr. Jacky Ting) were responsible to this area.


Ms. Angela Wong and Minda were taken care the flower for VIPs.


Prof. Frankey Pun, Dr. Andy Wong, Dr. Zoie Wong and Mr. Caleb Chin assisted the registration of translation device.


Before the congress, we arranged a Lion Dancing performance. We invited Prof. Kano, Mr. John Hung (Secretary-General, HKCTC), Mr. Qi Weiming (Chairperson, ANQ), Prof. Fugee Tsung and I (Chairman, HKSQ) to activate the lion and took a group photo.


The performance was lion dancing after drunk. It was very interesting.


After the performance, we took a group photo again.


Mr. Qi Weiming (Chairperson, ANQ, VP & Secretary General of CAQ) gave an opening speech.


Then I gave a welcoming remark and explained the design of ANQ Congress 2012 logo which based on Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.


Prof. Fugee Tsung welcomed all participants to join the congress in HKUST.


Mr. John Hung (Secretary-General, Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC)) who represented the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau gave a speech to support ANQ and demonstrated Hong Kong government focus on quality.


Before the keynote speeches, Mr. Qi Weiming presented souvenir to all keynote speakers as below.

After that I presented our appreciation to all representatives of sponsor companies.
MTR was our congress Platinum Sponsor. Mr. Joseph Ng (Safety & Quality Systems & Knowledge Management Manager, MTR) and I took a photo.


Dr. Peter Ho (Chairman, Techworld Industries Ltd.) was our Silver Sponsor. Dr. Peter Ho is also my classmate of EngD in CityU. Moreover, he is a chairman of CityU Eminence Society in which is our supporting organization.

The first keynote speaker was Prof. Way Kuo (President and University Distinguished Professor, CityU) and his topic entitled "Reliability and Survivability: The Future of Energy".


Prof. Way Kuo discussed to consider safety and waste management when developing nuclear energy, and strike a balance between supply, reliability, sustainability and economic development in the development of other sources.


The second keynote speaker was Mr. Masahiro Sakane (Chairman, Komatsu Ltd.) and his presentation named "DANTOTSU Management - A Company that Builds on Strengths from Generation to Generation". Mr. Sakane explained the meaning of DANTOTSU that was "To have superior advantages with which competitors won't be able to catch up in a few years".


After the Day One keynote speeches, Mr. Janak Mehta (President, International Academy for Quality (IAQ) & Chairman) introduced the IAQ Award.


Mr. Janak Mehta presented IAQ Award to Mr. Masahiro Sakane and invited Prof. Kano to take a photo.


Refreshment break was at 11:00am.


A photo was taken for Dr. KS Chin's research student team included EngD and PhD.


During the break, many participants would visit the poster session.


Prof. Yung Ho SUH (Former Chairperson, ANQ) explained Ishikawa-Kano Award (IKA) that recognized a person who should have made contributions to quality-centered excellence in any organized human endeavor manufacturing, infrastructure, services, health care, research, education, social service or any other.

The first awardee was Mr. Liang Haishan (Executive Vice President of Haier Group) and he shared his leadership to innovative the practical operational model to realize win-win result and leading achievement globally.


The second awardee was Ms. Dong Mingzhu (President of Gree Electric Appliances) and she shared her experience to lead Gree's air conditioner had topped No. 1 market share in China since 1995 and globally from 2005.


The third awardee was Mr. Venu Srinivasan (Chairman of TVS Motors) and he shared his experience and gave a comment "Getting the People Right" at the end.

Parallel Sessions were performed in afternoon. Dr Nigel Grigg and I needed to chair the session named Product Design and Development. However, the first speaker had informed us that he was not able to present. So I presented my paper entitled "Elected Leader Capability based on Eight Quality Management Principles - Hong Kong Case in 2012".


Then the representatives from Town Gas presented the paper "Increase Riser Inspection Rate of Target Buildings".


The second paper was also come from Town Gas team and named "Self-developed Coupler/Chain-assisted Cutting Machine".


I took a photo with Nigel Grigg (Asso. Professor, New Zealand Organisation of Quality (NZOQ)).


After that I went to the poster session and met Dr. Yuri ADLER and Ms. Galina STASOVA. Her poster was named "Comparison between the desirability function by E.C. Harrington and the Loss Function by Genichi Taguchi". I felt the topic was remembered Genichi Taguchi's contribution in the quality world. Her presentation is good and details and I gave my vote to her poster.


I took a photo with Prof. Kano in front of ANQ Congress 2012 backdrop after the end of Day One program.


We had arrange bus from HKUST to the Congress Hotels.
