ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) Awareness Training

I would like to share the ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) Awareness Training which I attended today. ISO 50001 EnMS establishes a framework to provide improvement of energy performance in organizations. Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP) was the first company to be certified with ISO 50001 by SGS in Hong Kong.

The trainer was Mr. Stephen Leung (Project Manager, SGS) and his training course entitled "ISO 50001 Foundation Training Course Workshop". He said the origin course needed three day and the awareness training was concentrated into 3.5 hours.

Mr. Leung said most energy efficiency was achieved through changes in how energy is managed rather than through installation of new technologies. An EnMS standard would provide a framework for integrating energy efficiency into existing systems for continuous improvement. Following diagram showed the history of ISO 50001 EnMS standard.

ISO 50001 EnMS model employed Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for continual improvement.

The benefits of implementing EnMS model were:
- Improved public relationships, media image, supply chain relations, credibility
- Ability to meet government targets in energy management and conservation
- Conserving input materials and energy, Employee motivation

The structure of ISO 50001 standard was shown as follows. Then the trainer explaned each clause and some important points were summarized.

The energy policy was established, implemented and maintained by top management so as to demonstrate the commitment.

Energy Planning Process was found similar to Energy Audit. The most important part was Energy Review in which used to identify significant energy use (e.g. The efficiency of HVAC and the lighting system) and established an energy baseline(s).

The following energy review (electricity) used to distinct the different between ISO 14001 (EMS) and ISO 50001 (EnMS), where ISO 50001 looked into the details of energy consumption.

Energy baseline was mentioned graphically.

Another example for Energy Performance Inducator (EnPI) for HVAC energy consumption (kWh) was also described. The concept of "Degree Day" was explained as the equation:
(Room Temp - Ambient Temp)*Day

After that we had a workshop to prepare Energy Objectives, Targets and Action Plan. Our team use the electricity consumption in Clean Room in which required 24hr air conditioning (20C+5C). We proposed to reduce the area or localize the clean area using booth or chamber, as well as, reduce the air supply volume in night. The following was workshop example for our reference.

The clause of "Evaluation of legal requirements and other requirement" was linked into Energy Policy. Legal requirement in Hong Kong included Cap 610, 598 and 123M should be considered.

At the end, a case study for property management was mentioned and 15 questions (T/F) were provided for exercise.
