Android Platform development has been of great interest of many pracititioner of mobile / tablet platform. Therefore, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) invited four experts from Google to conduct Android Developer Lab on 6 December 2011.
In the beginning, Senor Manager of Business Development & Technology Support, HKSTPC gave an opening speech.
Then Mr. Tony Chan (Developer Advocate, Google, Inc) introduced the schedule of this seminar.
The first speaker was Mr. Ryosuke Matsuuchi (Developer Advocate, Google, Inc) and his topic was "What's new and important in Android".
New Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) was introduced. This platform could be used both mobile and tablet framework.
Redesigned Home Screen Widgets were demonstrated.
Fragments Lifecycle flow was explained. It is a reusable user interface (UI) components within an Activity. Finally, he introduced the new features of Android 4.0 included Face Detection API, Android Beam, Wi-Fi Direct, Share Action Provider, Enhanced Accessibility, Social APIs and Calendar API.
The second speaker was Mr. Tony Chan (Developer Advocate, Google, Inc) and his presentation entitled "Excellence in Android UI Experience". Tony's presentation content included Quality Goals, Visual Style & User Experience and UI Patterns.
Quality Android User Experiences were identified as follows:
- Be fast, useable, beautiful, Android and Listen to Your Users.
Then he quoted Matias Duarte statement about ICS Design.
Icons guideline was briefed as Simple, Unique, Stand Out and Subtle.
The definition of unit in the multiple screens support was mentioned.
UI Patterns could support different screen sizes.
Tony said "DO marry OS visual style with your brand/identity" and "DON'T think that tablets are just big phones"
The third speaker was Mr. Fred Chung (Developer Advocate, Google, Inc) and his presentation topic was "Android Market". It included Android Addressable Customers, Market Features and Market Pro Tips.
Fred quoted that Android market share was about 48% globally and 85% in South Korea, as well as, 70% in Taiwan.
Moreover, the rapid growth in activations were observed from May 2010 to July 2011.
The App installations per device was mentioned. The number one is Honeycomb and the second is Gingerbread.
In-app Billing about Client Version, Server Version were described in the following charts.
Finally, he gave some Pro Tips such as to spend some efforts on the graphical assets for your apps, to provide a short video high lighting the top features of your apps, and to filter problematic or non-compatible devices, etc. At the end Fred took how to make your apps successful.
The last speaker was Mr. Anirudh Dewani (Developer Advocate, Google, Inc) and his topic entitled "Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)". His topic included Connectivity (Wi-Fi Direct), Communication (Android Beam) and Advanced Camera APIs.
Mr. Dewani explained the Wi-Fi Direct - App components.
The use of Wi-Fi Direct between two mobile was demonstrated.
After the seminar, Codelab was held for participants to practice.

Although I am a iPhone developer, I am also interested in Android development. If the speakers are come from Google, it is worth to attend. But, it is now too late!!!
