Welcome to join the seminar on “The Best Renewable Energy for Hong Kong”

The Seminar of the 21st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 23 July 2010 from 19:30 to 20:30 in Room CF401, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been sent to all HKSQ members last week. During AGM, I will summarize all activities and share some achievement of HKSQ in 2009/2010. Moreover, I would like to invite all HKSQ member / non-member to join us for the seminar and have a dinner after the HKSQ annual general meeting.

Sustainable development and building low carbon economies are the priority of many city governments. Concern from the environmental experts and the general public on the use of fossil fuels and emission of green house gases also drive the societies to save energy and to switch to renewable energy in order to reduce emission and conserve natural resource. While solar and wind energy are being fully exploited in many countries, their costs and geographical limitations make it difficult to be adopted in full scale in many cities, like Hong Kong.

On the other hand, Hong Kong dumps over 9,000 tonnes (1 tonne = 1000 kg) of municipal solid waste to the landfills everyday. Although incineration is one way to convert the waste to energy, it will increase our total emission. The emission of the energy we get from incineration will be 4 times more of what the power companies are currently producing. Can we convert these wastes into renewable energy without burning? The speaker will share his experience in the waste industry and the state-of-the-art waste recycling technologies that will turn waste into renewable energy with no emission.

Mr. Vincent Cheng is the speaker and he has over 30 years of experience in electrical and electronic engineering, quality assurance, management consulting and environmental projects. He has successfully assisted many big corporate clients, including various government departments and big corporations in Hong Kong, in improving their quality, environmental and safety systems and achieving ISO certifications. He has also successfully created, developed and managed a 300 tonne per day MSW treatment project and two medical waste treatment projects in China.

Currently, Mr. Cheng is the General Manger of WST International (Holdings) Limited which promotes an innovative household waste to resources technology. He is an Executive Committee Member of HKSQ, the Vice Chairman of the Green Great Wall Foundation and the Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Energy Conservation Association. He holds a higher certification in electrical engineering, a degree in electronic engineering and a master degree in business administration.
