Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization Inauguration Ceremony

Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization (HKBIO) inauguration ceremony was held in Charles K. Kao Auditorium at Hong Kong Science Park on 3 June 2010. Leaders and representatives from the Government of HKSAR, industry, academia and commercial sector were invited to join the ceremony.


In the beginning of the ceremony, Professor Albert Cheung-Hoi YU (Chairman of HKBIO) gave welcoming speech. He said that the announcement of the inauguration of the HKBIO demonstrated the commitment towards the world’s biotechnology future and claritied of the necessity and importance of strengthening Hong Kong’s biotechnology.

He also mentioned that HKBIO would contribute to ensure the continued momentum of science, innovation and technology in the cultivation of Hong Kong as a knowledge-based economy and the World’s hub for biotechnology in Asia.

The first guest speaker was Ms. Janet Wong Wing-Chen (ITC Commissioner, JP) and she briefed the industry about HKSTP support and expected HKBIO establishment to enhance the development of Hong Kong biotechnology.

The second speaker was Mrs. Regina IP LAU Suk-Yee (Legco Member, GBS, JP). She remembered her teacher in university said that physics and semiconductor is the last century but biotechnology is this century. Hong Kong should set biotechnology strategy and positioning.


Lastly, Mr. E. Anthony TAN (CEO of HKSTP) introduced Science Park program to support biotechnology. Since Innovation and Technology was identified by Task Force on Economic Challenges as one of six economic areas in Hong Kong, HKSTP provided different supports such as extension of biotechnology support laboratory (Phase II) and launched Incu-Bio program for SMEs. He expected that HKSTP would contribute to Hong Kong to be World’s hub for biotechnology in Asia.
