Christmas Trip in China
I took this Christmas holiday to visit Chaozhou (The trip called “南澳島、汕頭市、饒平土樓、潮州古城聖誕節三天遊”). On the way, many wind turbines to generate electricity were observed, indicating that China needed more renewable energy.
We passed the Shantou Bridge.
Then I arrived at Raoping Earthen Building (饒平土樓).
Buildings were built according to the rule of Eight Trigrams (八卦). It used to defense the invader.
We stayed in Chao Zhou Hotel on 25 Dec 2011.
Next day, we went to Chao Zhou Ancient City. The guide explained the city model.
I took a photo in front of the House of Ancient Scholar (進士第).
The guide said scholar’s house was very luxury so that roof of house used many Tile (瓦片).
Moreover, there were many guide stations on the roof.
After that we visited the one of four Ancient Bridges in China called Xiang Zi Bridge (湘子橋).
The photo for night scene of that bridge
The special characteristic of that bride was the movable part in the middle of the bridge.
We went to Chaozhou Guangji gate tower (潮州廣濟門城樓).
The photo for night scene of that tower
Then we had a vegetarian lunch. The food was similar to Abalone (鮑魚).
The other food was similar to Squid (魷魚).
After the lunch, we visited the Ancient Temple called Kaiyuan (開元寺). (More than a thousand year!)
There were two Buddhism trees (培提樹).
This sculpture was corroded for a thousand years.
The guide explained why a wooden fish was found in every temple. It was because fish eyes were not closed, implying hardworking.
After visited the temple, we travelled the village by tricycle (三輪車) which used electricity rather than manpower.
The first day activities were completed. We went to Nanao Island through ferry.
Arrived the island, we visited Shantou Nanao Song Well (汕頭南澳宋井).
The sculpture memorized the last king of Song Dynasty.
I took a photo in front of the hotel in Nanao Island.
The photo showed the incomplete Nanao Bridge. After the bridge built, it could be driven to the island.
Photo of ferry
We went to the Garden of the Heaven Temple (天壇花園).
We took a cable chair up the hill.
And then we drove the roller coaster down the hill.
The video was taken.
Before the end of our trip, we had lunch in the restaurant called China Travel Restaurant. The most famous food called “Chaozhou 18-style meals(潮州十八式風味餐)”

The lecture 14 of General Education and Public Affairs Certificate Course (通識及公共事務證書課程) was held on 17 December 2011. The summary was shown as follow.
第十四課 (17 December 2011)
能源政治:國際安全的新熱點
袁彌昌博士主講(英國雷丁大學戰略研究系博士/新力量網絡主席)
Firstly, Mr. Derek Yuen introduced the world's energy picture included Russia, USA and China.
He showed the Energy Map in which showed a large portion of gas supply from Russia. The sources of US net petroleum imports in 2010 was mentioned that 49% from Western Hemisphere, 23% from Africa, 18% from Pesian Gulf and 10% from others.
The world's natural gas reserves were reviewed. Russia had the largest percentage on gas reserve.
Vladimir Putin was a strong leader in Russia and he was member of KGB (national security agency). He had a good strategy and policy on energy.
Pipeline monopoly was in Russia and re-exporting both oil and gas from the Caspian. The red color lines were pipeline from Russia which supplied gas to Europe.
In strategic ellipse, there were about 70% of natural gas reserved in this area.
Gas supply was very important on national security. The pipeline wars would be appeared in some economy planning such as Nabucco (expected to be completed in 2017) and South Stream (expected to be completed in 2015).
The Nabucco pipeline attempted to lessen European dependence on Russian energy. The South Stream project was seen as rival to the planned Nabucco pipeline.
US strategy was briefed such as to maintain its presence in Central Asia, to establish export routes bypassing Russia and Iran, and to diversify Europe's energy supply. There were 7 World's Choke points (咽喉要道) below.

Seminar on "Voice of Customer" through QFD
A seminar on Voice of Customer (VOC), which the 2nd seminar on Quality Function Deployment (QFD) series, was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and co-organized by Hong Kong Quality Function Deployment Association (HKQFDA) on 16 Dec 2011. Meeting customer needs is fundamental to achieving customer satisfaction. QFD provides a method for collecting, processing and deploying the VOC to designing product and service features so as to meet the customer needs. I gave an opening remarks and introduced the guest speaker.
Dr. Catherine Chan (President, Hong Kong QFD Association) was the speaker to introduce how QFD deals with VOC. QFD has been used for doing quality planning and product design over 40 years.
QFD refers:
Q - Quality which is determined by Customer Expectations (CE)
F - Function which is the "HOW" of the product or service for meeting the CE
D - Deployment which is how suppliers manage the flow of the development efforts so as to make certain that CE drive the development of products and services.
Then Dr. Catherine Chan brief three basic steps of QFD below:
1. Identify the important customers' needs
2. Translate customers' needs into quality elements & identify the important ones
3. Deploy the important quality elements into various aspects to achieve quality
After introduced QFD basic concept, Dr. Catherine Chan said Voice of the Customer was Primary Source of Information for Product/Service Development.
There were 2 Don'ts.
"Don't assume you know customers' needs/requirements."
"Don't Ask Customers What the Product/Service Should Be"
It was because "Not All Customers can tell their Needs/Requirments"
Dr. Catherine Chan stated several ways to collect customer needs such as Observe, Ask, Feel, Listen, Smell, etc. Then she introduced four steps to collect of VOC.
1 - Forecast possible failure that may happen
2 - Work with Representable Customers
3 - Go to the real place to see what to be needed (Gemba 現場)
4 - Propose scenes for the product to be used
She explained how to positively and completely Interpret VOC as follows:
1 - Change negative voice into positive voice
2 - Convert opinions and suggestions into needs
3 - Extract needs from the voice
4 - Add in missing needs from completion
5 - Identify both existing and potential needs
