ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) 2016 – Day 3

In 2016, there is the 70th ASQ The theme of ASQ World Conference for Quality and Improvement (WCQI) with the theme “Quality Expanded: In the Profession, Through the Organization, and Around the World”.  I would like to share the summary of the conference – Day 3 below. First, we took a photo with ASQ friend in front of national flags. (Left: Mr. Richard YC Feng (Quality Management in Automotive Industry), Mr. Denis Devos, Dr. Albert Tsang, I and Minda)

In this morning session, I attended Mr. David Foster (Director, QM, IO Property & Land Management Service, CBRE) and his presentation named “A Case Study of Innovation and Quality Management in Facility Management”.  He would like to share how established Quality Management approaches were used to leverage Innovation.

Firstly, Mr. David Foster briefed their High Level Plan for Program Development and Deployment.  The key aspects of program included “Objectives”, “Develop and Deployment Internally”, “Utilize Existing and Proven Approaches”, “Develop a Functional Definition of Innovation” and “Named the Innovation Team Program (ITP))

High Level Program (HLP) Project Innovation Scale defined as follows:
Level 4 – “Net new” to Industry / Market -> High probability of adoption outside of the account (breakthrough)
Level 3– “Net new” with our account and with CBRE (industry benchmark)
Level 2 – “Net new” to Account but not to CBRE (best practice program)
Level 1– Basic Improvement to Current Process (traditional Continual Improvement)

The diagram showed the ITP focus areas among Level 1 to Level 4 and from Stepwise to Breakthrough.

After that I participate another Innovation talk by Mr. Peter Merrill and his topic entitled “Self Managed Team build an Innovation Culture”.  Mr. Peter Merrill discussed how to build Creativity, Self Managed Team and Structure that supported Innovation.

Mr. Peter Merrill quoted the World Economic Forum (WEF) top ten skills for future jobs and found that the Quality Control would be disappear of top ten in 2020 but the creativity skill from No.10 upto No. 3.  He said Creativity Behaviour included Exploration, Collaboration and Experimentation. From IBM CEO survey, the most people who provided new idea were Employees (41%), Business Partners (37%) and Customers (35%).

Then Mr. Peter Merrill introduced four types of Innovation people and they were Creator, Connector, Developer and Doer.  He said the ideal unit was 250 people.  Communication problem would happen if over 300 people.  Each team leader led 6 people for 3 layer that would be upto 259 people.

Finally, Mr. Peter Merrill shared the innovation secret which was Culture. The team must understand why the leader made the decision.  He said everyone being creative if and only if had fun but not order.

In the closing session, team competition results were announced.  Shanghai JABIL got the first running up.

The last keynote speaker was Mr. Josh Linkner (Entrepreneur, Keynote Speaker, and Author) and his presentation topic entitled “Harnessing Innovation – Fresh Approaches to Growth, Creativity and Transformation”.  A disruptor is “Innovator”, “Artist” or “Entrepreneur”.

Mr. Josh Linkner wrote two famous books named “Disciplined Dreaming” and “The Road to Reinvention”.

Then he explained the 5 obsessions of Innovation below:
i)                    Get Curious (e.g. Why? What If? And Why Not?; tools of 5 Why)
ii)                   Crave“When’s Next?” (e.g. Best Practices (old/existing) to Next Practices)
iii)                 Defy Tradition (e.g. new donut could price up to ten time from $0.5 to $5.0)
iv)                 Get Scrappy (e.g. TV film – MacGyver who solved the complicated problem used limited resource and time.)
v)                  Adapt Fast

Finally, he gave us an Innovation Challenge that “In the next 7 days, Find One Idea for Creative Disruption”.

After the conference, I got Josh’s signature on his new book and took a photo for memory.

In this afternoon, we went to ASQ Centre with Dr. Albert Tsang again.

Then we visited the Art Museum.  We took some beautiful photos for memory.

Finished the trip for the 70th anniversary ASQ WCQI 2015 and I got much joyful time for ceremony of fellowship and enjoyed several outstanding speeches.
